Clint Murchison and Jerry Jones - Owners At Opposite Ends of the Field

February 5th, 2010 by princess3529

Through its franchise history, the Dallas Cowboys have had a number of all-stars whose skills and achievements have created legends and contributed to Dallas Cowboys history. Endless players have donned the single star and blue and white jerseys of the Dallas Cowboys and taken to the field at Texas Stadium. In so doing, some of them, such as Roger Staubach, Troy Aikman and Emmitt Smith have become legends.

The Dallas Cowboys are one of the most successful teams in the history of the National Football League and hold numerous league records, thanks to countless players over the years, not to mention the team’s coaches who have walked the sidelines day after day. Cowboys football success can also be attributed to the dedicated and solid team owners they have had over their forty plus years of existence.

When the Dallas Cowboys franchise was established in 1960, the founding owner was Dallas, Texas, native Clint Murchison. Murchison was a hands-off owner who believed in surrounding himself with experts in the different aspects of the game. Hence, he delegated operational control of the Cowboys to General Manager Tex Schramm, Coach Tom Landry and Scouting/Personnel Director Gil Brandt. Landry enjoyed total authority in the day to day running of the team while Brandt was given free reign in the drafting and scouting of players. Murchison’s non interferring approach and lack of second guessing has been said by many to be the driving force behind the Dallas Cowboy’s great success and their 20 consecutive winning seasons from 1965 to 1985.

In 1984, Murchison sold the Dallas Cowboys to an investment syndicate. In 1989 the team was bought by Jerry Jones. It quickly became evident that the ownership style of Murchison and Jones was at opposite ends of the field.

Jerrel Wayne “Jerry” Jones, a star running back for his North Little Rock, Arkansas, high school team, would go on to play play guard at the University of Arkansas where Jimmy Johnson and Barry Switzer were among his teammates. In addition to owning the Cowboys, Jones has since taken on the role of General Manager. Of all the owners in professional sports, he is considered to be one of the most involved with his team on a day-to-day basis. Indeed, Jones can be seen on the sidelines of every Cowboys game.

Upon becoming owner, Jones fired Dallas Cowboys coach Tom Landry, the only coach the Cowboys had ever known, and promptly hired his former teammate, Jimmy Johnson to take over the coaching duties. The unceremonial firing of Landry did not go over well with Cowboy fans and to this day he has not been forgiven. The dismissal of Landry was was the first sign that the new owner of Cowboys football was headed in a new and opposite direction.

With Johnson at the helm, the Cowboys became Super Bowl Champions two consecutive years. Instead of giving due credit to Johnson, Jones himself took the credit saying “any one of 500 coaches could have won those Super Bowls” considering the talent that he had drafted and signed for the team. Jones also made a comment that he was going to replace Johnson with another former teammate, Barry Switzer. Although Jones later denied this statement it turned out to be true and so ended Jimmy Johnson’s tenure as Dallas Cowboys coach, despite him having lead his team to two consecutive Super Bowl victories. Dallas Cowboys coach Switzer took the team to their fifth Super Bowl Championship in 1995. Since Switzer, Jones has hired Chan Gailey, Dave Campo, Bill Parcels and most recently Wade Phillips to lead America’s Team.

Clint Murchison’s - let the experts lead - approach was the total opposite of Jerry Jones - get involved - approach. Indeed, Jones is constantly criticized by Cowboys fans for being too involved with all aspects of the team. Although Murchison and Jones’ ownership styles are at opposite ends of the field each of their unique techniques have proven to be fruitful for the Dallas Cowboys and for themselves. The NFL Dallas Cowboys have been an exceptional team through the years thanks in part to these dynamic owners.

JT Thomas Inducted Into Minor League Football News Hall of Fame

February 4th, 2010 by princess3529

Thomas’ nomination was reviewed by the MLFN’s Board of Directors, and he received notification of his acceptance on July 30.

“It is truly an honor to be receiving this award,” said Thomas. “I owe a tremendous thank you to everyone for supporting me through the years.”

Thomas has old-fashioned strong leadership skills, tireless work ethic, and passion for the game to become a driving force in the development and promotion of minor league and semi-professional football across the Midwest.

The sage of JT Thomas’ football career can be broken into three definite chapters: player, coach, and executive. Thomas’ collegiate career started at Fort Scott Community College (Kansas) in 1992. Following his sophomore season, Thomas transferred to West Virginia University (WVU) .

In two seasons at Fort Scott - both as team captain - Thomas earned two All-Kansas Jayhawk Conference honors at outside linebacker and Defensive Player of the Game in 1992’s Valley of the Sun Bowl. At inside linebacker for WVU, Thomas received two Mountaineer Club Awards for on-field excellence, earned two All-Big East team honors, and won Defensive Player of the Game in the 1994 CarQuest Bowl. He also led both teams in tackles each season.

A successful college career led Thomas to the semi-pro football circuit in 1996 with the Charleston Rockets, where he was able to play with conventional WVU huge Major Harris. Returning to outside linebacker, Thomas led the team in tackles and became a league All-Star as the Rockets finished their 11-game regular season 10-1. Thomas attempted to carry his success from semi-pro ball to the Arena Football League in 1997 with the Albany Firebirds, but sustained a career ending leg injury on the third day of training camp.

Instead of a helmet and pads, the next step of Thomas’ football career featured a headset and clipboard. After a stint as Defensive Coordinator for a championship team of 13-16 year olds, Thomas returned to semi-pro football in 2000 as Head Coach of the West Virginia WHAM! Located in Morgantown, WV, Thomas compiled a .695 winning percentage (41 wins, 18 losses), won three Coach of the Year awards, and coached three league All-Star games in six seasons as WHAM! head coach.

In 2001, Thomas also led the WHAM! to the Mid-Ohio Football League (MOFL) Championship.

During the 2003 season, Thomas took over stout ownership of the WHAM! When he stepped off the WHAM! sideline in 2005, he decided to shift his focus full-time towards developing the success of semi-professional football and the WHAM! franchise. In the two years since he has stopped coaching, Thomas has held executive positions within the Ohio Valley Football League and the MOFL. In January of 2007, Thomas was promoted to MOFL Commissioner.

Currently, Thomas oversees the day-to-day operations of the MOFL - an expanding, 10-team semi-pro league across Ohio, Michigan, and Kentucky. His adore for semi-professional football is matched only by his desire to peep the MOFL - and every minor league football organization - perform a football product that is competitive, organized, developed, and enthralling for the players in the game and the fans in the stands.

Thomas also serves as a Semi-Professional Sports Consultant with League Level, LLC, a company that provides marketing and promotional strategies for organizations with an emphasis in amateur and semi-professional athletics.

He currently resides in Morgantown, WV, with his wife Rochelle and two children, Jared, 3, and AJ, 10 months. Thomas also has son, JT Thomas III, from a previous relationship.

This is an unbelievably incredible series which has yet to really receive its due from American anime fans. The original Japanese title is “Tenshi ni Narumon!”, which roughly translates to, “I’m Gonna Be an Angel!” The title is appropriate, but at the same time pretty deceptive. This series is definitely NOT your run-of-the-mill cutesy kid anime. While it does have more than its share of kawaii elements, it also has a very deep and very dark subplot which is foreshadowed in the opening seconds of the first epsiode. This darkness erupts in the middle episodes, and it practically explodes in the final story arc.

Describing the show is a little tricky. It features a high school boy named Yuusuke and a girl named Noelle, who just happens to wear a halo. As the series starts, Yuusuke is on his first day of living by himself, and he’s quite happy about his freedom. On his first day alone, and on the way to school that morning, no less, he “stumbles” across Noelle in the woods (okay, he falls off of a bank and lands on her). She is naked and unconscious, for reasons that are too complicated to explain. Suffice it to say that when Yuusuke lands on her, he accidentally kisses her, and this of course wakes her up. She immediately assumes that Yuusuke is now her husband (so will her family - more on that later). Yuusuke runs away in a blind fear, but his problems have just begun. So has the series, in fact - all of this takes place in just the opening minutes of the first episode!

By the end of the first episode, we learn that Noelle is now a student in Yuusuke’s class, and that her “family” has moved themselves (and their entire house!) to the spot where Yuusuke’s house had been. We also learn that Yuusuke has a crush on another girl (Natsumi), even though she won’t spare him the time of day because of several unfortunate and embarrassing incidents. It is during his attempt to apologize for one such incident that we hear Yuusuke compare Natsumi to an angel: Noelle, upon overhearing this, later pledges to become an angel for Yuusuke. The series centers upon this pledge and how everyone handles the consequences it creates.

The dramatic side of the series is excellently offset by its comedic side. By far, the funniest part of the show involves Noelle’s “family.” They’re from the “Demon World,” and they can only be described as a cross between The Munsters, Bewitched, and a Fisher-Price commercial. The father is especially funny in the original Japanese series: he’s an enormous Frankenstein’s monster who wears glasses and a business suit, and he speaks in an *extremely* polite Japanese dialect. The mother and grandmother are witches, the brother is a vampire, the little sister is a mad scientist in training, and the big sister is invisible. The whole family is extremely naive as to the ways of the “human world,” which invariably results in trouble for all (usually at the expense of the humans involved). As strange as these characters may seem, they’re mild when compared to the “villains” of the show. All of the characters are eventually developed to a degree that you normally won’t see in a series like this, and none of them (especially the “villains”) are what they would at first seem to be.

The first 7 or 8 episodes (out of 26 total) are heavily laden with slapstick, but like I mentioned earlier there is a very deep plot that stirs slowly throughout. There are two major story arcs later on in the series that must be seen to be believed: one happens right in the middle, and another that spans the last 5 episodes. The ending arc is especially impressive, and is in fact the only piece of anime that has ever moved me emotionally. Seriously - it is REALLY that good.

In short, this is a series that you can’t afford to miss, and one that is bound to go down as a classic of the genre. Incredibly good stuff, and a must have for any serious anime fan.

Tenshi ni Narumon (I’m Gonna Be An Angel) is a great series. It has everything from manic hyperness, dancing and singing to a much calmer, darker perspective in the later episodes.
This DVD is amazing. A great dub track, in addition to the origional Japanese. Also, two nice sets of subtitles - one a more literal translation, and one more processed for those not wanting to think half in japanese.
The DVD contains the first five episodes of the 26 episode series. I personnally can’t wait for the next DVD.
The animation is high quality, the plot and voice acting are awesome. If only more anime translation companies put in this much effort. Support this amazing company by buying this DVD.

I don’t know who Paramount is trying to lure into buying this set. But for what it’s worth, this is a pretty sweet package.

In case you’re unfamiliar with the “Star Trek” franchise, this set includes the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th movies. The reason it’s tagged as a “trilogy” is because each film starts almost immediately where the previous one left off. Also, these are three of the most popular of the series.

I could talk forever about these movies, but I think the important thing to remember is that all of them will hold up if you’re not a fan of the franchise.

“Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan” is a fan-favorite for many reasons, one of them that the villain is a character from the original 1960s TV show. But, if you’ve never seen Khan’s appearance from the TV show, I think you’ll still get a huge thrill seeing him ooze of cold vengeance. Admiral Kirk’s struggle to face life & death — both literally and spiritually — is sure to please anyone who enjoys a good character drama. The drama and relationships between the characters are what drive the story from start to finish, and you don’t need to be a fan to appreciate the connections. The space battles are still a treat even after over 25 years, and the ending scenes are incredibly powerful.

“Star Trek II” is one of my favorite movies of the 80s, and I’m sure I’d say that even if I wasn’t a fan of this franchise. It’s an expertly-crafted sci-fi action/drama, and earns its acclaimed status.

__________________________________________________

“Star Trek III: The Search For Spock” is probably the least favorite from this trilogy, but it’s still a good one, in my opinion. Even though non-Trekkers may be confused by a few of the story developments (notably Spock’s Vulcan culture), I believe this one holds its own simply because of its production merits. James Horner’s music reuses tracks from “Star Trek II”, but has a few haunting melodies specifically for this installment. The action is good, and kinda brutal when the Klingons take decisive action. And I find the premise intriguing…try to recover a resurrected companion who’s stranded on a planet about to explode, while you’re being hunted by ruthless, greedy warriors!

“Star Trek III” will speak well enough to newcomers, but it’s definitely tailored more for the familiar audience.

__________________________________________________

“Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home” is sure to be a pleasant ride for anybody. Our heroes must travel back in time to recover an extinct species to save the planet. Why and how humpback whales are supposed to tell an alien to stop ruining our O-zone layer is beyond me. But somehow it all makes sense, and it’s not the reason to invest in this film.

In addition to the usual merits we look for in “Star Trek” movies (great music, engaging special effects, and fun characters), this one is faltout hilarious! Try to imagine how seven 23rd Century explorers (one of them an alien) attempt to steal two enormous mammals when their spaceship has lost most of its energy after their time travel. You got misused profanity, Cold War tension, primitive technology, and contemporary music. But rather than being a farce, the movie is great fun.

“Star Trek IV” may not be my favorite of the series, but I’m sure it’s the one that everyone will enjoy. It stimulates your brain, uplifts your spirit, and forces some strong laughs.

__________________________________________________

To my knowledge, some of the bonus extras that were released on the 2-disc sets back in 2001-2003 won’t be on this “Motion Picture Trilogy”. Instead, there will be a new goodies.

The main reason I want to check this set out is that Ronald D. Moore provides a track on “Star Trek III”. Moore wrote some of the best episodes for “The Next Generation” TV show, was the driving force behind the new “Battlestar Galactica” series, and has proven to be an engaging speaker through his podcast commentaries.

But that’s just the fanboy in me. I don’t see much of a reason to buy this set if you already own the 2-disc releases of these movies. But if you’ve never owned “Star Trek II, III, or IV” — or never SEEN them — then this is a good way to go.

What’s good about it: contains the 3 best “Trek” films that feature the original cast. The picture is slightly better than the 2-disc DVDs of these films, which looked great. The Dolby Digital EX sound is a nice improvement over the previous releases.

What’s bad about it: Wrath of Khan is the theatrical cut, whereas the 2-disc DVD was the Director’s Cut. NONE of the incredible bonus features from the 2-disc releases are included with this set, and the all-new features are mostly a bust. The visual effects featurette in this set is a real letdown, as it covers the first 6 movies in 13 minutes, so there is no time for any great detail on the FX work.

Bottom line: The transfers, both video and audio, are as good as DVD gets. If that’s what you are after, or if you don’t have the out of print 2-disc releases, this should do fine.

Being a geek, I bought this assuming it was going to be a dry documentary on the history of Linux, but I would enjoy it anyway. I was amazed at how well done this movie is. Not only does it document the general history of Open Source and Free Software issues, but it provides a great story of conflict between ‘good’ (Free Software and Open Source) and ‘evil’ (Proprietary Software). I watched this with my girlfriend who is a non-geek and she was able to follow along very easily and enjoyed the movie as much as I did. She even wanted to make the switch to Linux after watching.

The pace is quick, and one of the best aspects of the movie is the music. It helps keep the movie fun and light-hearted, yet provides an intelligent ‘edge’ at the same time. All of the interviewees have very unique and dynamic personalities; they are the type of thinkers you don’t generally meet everyday. Richard Stallman in particular has some of the most convincing comments in the film, and by the end, I was quick to pop in the second disc to see the bonus interviews with him.

Overall, I think this is a film which anyone who uses a computer on a regular basis should watch. We need to not take Microsoft for granted and realize there are alternatives that don’t try to control what we do.

This is one of the best movies I’ve seen.

This documentary uses interviews to trace the origins of Linux, and in the process, it provides an interesting insight into the open source movement and its philosophy.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Revolution OS! Click Here

Richard Stallman, founder of the GNU project, is featured prominently throughout the film. (GNU is a set of applications that provide a UNIX-compatible framework.) He explains how GNU was developed through the open source environment, an environment where code can be taken, modified, and shared, but it cannot be made proprietary. He also explains the development of the GNU General Public License which prohibits developers from making the code proprietary.

During GNU’s development, Linus Torvalde, was developing a kernel–which was just the piece that was missing from the open source environment. (A kernel is use to allocate resources to other applications.) This kernel became Linux. As Stallman said, it would take years to get GNU and Linux to work together smoothly, but eventually things would take off. Although Linux started in 1991 with 10,000 lines of code, it might have remained a hobbyist’s OS, if it had not been for the Apache web server. Apache became the ‘killer app,’ the business case for buying Linux. (There is an interview shown with Brian Behlendorf, president of the Apache project.) By 1998, Linux had 7.5 million users and companies like Red Hat were contributing to its growth by selling distribution and support.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Revolution OS! Click Here

This film also shows the tug-of-war between Microsoft and open source proponents. Eric S. Raymond, author of The Cathedral and the Bazaar, describes some differences between the proprietary and open source environments, and he explains how his book was one of many influences on Netscape’s decision to release their source code.

You will see interviews with Michael Tieman (co-founder of Cygnus Technology) and Larry Augustin (co-founder of VA Linux). The interview with Bruce Perens, author of Open Source Definition, is interesting. It is used throughout the film to frame the GNU and Linux development stories within the open source context. Also, as Perens lists the ‘rights’ of open software, one senses that the open source philosophy is one that has been seriously thought out.

Overall, this was an interesting documentary. However, I’m giving it only 4 stars because I found the segment at the end (where Torvalde and Augustin were speaking) to be very tedious. It didn’t add to the content and it seemed more like personal ‘grand-standing.’ Still, I’d recommend this film to anyone who is interested in computer history or is looking to get a better understanding of what the open source movement is about.

This is by far the best looking of any of the pokemon movies. The blend of CGI and animation is better than it’s ever been. Wonderful music and a great story. Also the first D/P movie and usually the first film in a new region is wonderful. This film also features more types of pokemon than anyother movie before it to help celebrate the 10 year anniversary. This is a must see for all pokemon fans.

I ordered this before the release for my kids. They are bilingual Japanese and were expecting it to be in Japanese as the company promised. Now that the video has been released the ad has been changed to say English only. What a scam. Would it have been so hard to include both an English and a Japanese audio track like with all the Miyazaki movies? Now I have to return it and buy it here in Japan, (where it costs twice as much). What a waste of time. Thanks, Viz.

If you want a Sonic the Hedgehog cartoon that is follows the same story line as the video games, this series is not for you. If you are looking for a classic Sonic the Hedgehog cartoon with a bit of a twist, I highly recommend this series.

Sonic Underground has a good story line, great characters, and good morals (which is not the case with most of the cartoons these days). Sonia’s voice could use improvement, but after you listen for a little while you get used to it.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Sonic Underground: The Series! Click Here

As for the music, there is one song in every episode. Some adults may not like the songs, but the episodes are geared towards children and most children love the songs. They have a catchy beat, have good morals and are fun!

It is obvious that the creators of Sonic Underground put much effort and time into the detailed artwork and story line of the show. The story line is different than the games, but it is a good story line nonetheless.

There are other episodes that hopefully will be released if there is enough demand for this series. I hope that you will consider buying it so that they will complete the Sonic Underground DVD collection and other Sonic the Hedgehog cartoon series collections.

At this time, Amazon does not list the contents of the DVD set.

5 Mummy Wrap (from “Mummy Dearest”)

7 We’re The Sonic Underground (from “Healer”)

8 Lady Liberty (from “The Pendant”)

If you searched for Sonic Underground on Amazon, you are probably a fan of the series, but if not, I will briefly summarize: Sonic Underground is a cartoon from 1999 that stars the famed Sonic the Hedgehog from Sega’s most popular video game franchise. Sonic Underground introduced many firsts for the Sonic franchise including instruments, Sonic’s family members, and an overall darker feel than previous Sonic games and shows.

The newly released Sonic Underground DVD set consists of 20 of the original 40 aired episodes on a 3 DVD set. Also included is a bonus CD including 8 songs from the show. Packed with bonus features ranging from commentary to a music video jukebox, the set is definately a great buy.

Sonic Underground is by far one of the most underrated TV series of all time and just may be the best cartoon ever made in my opinion. If you are a Sonic fan or just looking for a great series to watch, Sonic Underground is for you.

I was a little leery of this series because of the cover and just the fact that it was only 13 episodes. Most series that have that short amount don’t uusally have good content. I’ve got to hand it to Genoen, which I’ve should’ve known based on Samurai Champloo and R.O.D. It has great storyline and a lot of good action, though I wish there had been longer action scenes.

A couple things I’m disappointed with is the characters and their voice-overs. The unrefined seem to be in for comic relief, but it’s very poor. Shiro’s sexually comments and Kionosuke do it for me. I’d also would’ve liked to see a little more talk from Jubei’s counterpart, Jubei II. Plus, the acting is a little too rehearsed. It doesn’t seem very relaxed, but overall, I loved the show.

I saw some of the epsiodes at a local libary and liked it, so if want to buy it and you on a buget try the Anime Legends verison or buy as an import.
