I live with a Vietnam Vet who served in the late 1960s with 1st Cav. Medivac. During service he earned two Purple Hearts, the Distinguished Flying Cross, and the Air Medal. Since WE WERE SOLDIERS concerns the 1st Cav., Randy wanted to see it. I reluctantly agreed; I am not partial to war films and I dislike Mel Gibson, and Randy is very hard on Vietnam War films. He dismisses PLATOON as a Hollywood 8×10 glossy; says APOCALYPSE NOW is an interesting movie that captures the paranoia, but all the technical details are wrong; and describes DEER HUNTER as excellent in its depiction of the strangeness of coming home but so full of plot holes that he can hardly endure it. And about one and all he says: “It wasn’t like that.”

He was silent through the film, and when we left the theatre I asked what he thought. He said, “They finally got it. That’s what it was like. All the details are right. The actors were just like the men I knew. They looked like that and they talked like that. And the army wives too, they really were like that, at least every one I ever knew.” The he was silent for a long time. At last he said, “You remember the scene where the guy tries to pick up a burn victim by the legs and all the skin slides off? Something like that happened to me once. It was at a helicopter crash. I went to pick him up and all the skin just slid right off. It looked just like that, too. I’ve never told any one about it.”

In most respects WE WERE SOLDIERS is a war movie plain and simple. There are several moments when the film relates the war to the politics and social movements that swirled about it, and the near destruction of the 1st. Cav.’s 7th Battalion at Ia Drang clearly arises from the top brass’ foolish decision to send the 7th into an obvious ambush–but the film is not so much interested in what was going on at home or at the army’s top as it is in what was actually occurring on the ground. And in this it is extremely meticulous, detailed, and often horrifically successful. Neither Randy nor I–nor any one in the theatre I could see–was bored by or dismissive of the film. It grabs you and it grabs you hard, and I can easily say that it is one of the finest war movies I have ever seen, far superior to the likes of SAVING PRIVATE RYAN, which seems quite tame in comparison.

Perhaps the single most impressive thing about the film is that it never casts its characters in a heroic light; they are simply soldiers who have been sent to do a job, and they do it knowing the risks, and they do it well in spite of the odds. Mel Gibson, although I generally despise him as both an actor and a human being, is very, very good as commanding officer Hal Moore, and he is equaled by Sam Elliot, Greg Kinnear, Chris Klein, and every other actor on the battlefield. The supporting female cast, seen early in the film and in shorter scenes showing the home front as the battle rages, is also particularly fine, with Julie Moore able to convey in glance what most actresses could not communicate in five pages of dialogue. The script, direction, cinematography, and special effects are sharp, fast, and possess a “you are there” quality that is very powerful.

Randy did have a criticism. “I don’t think there would be time for casualty telegrams to actually get home while the battle was going on,” he said. “After all, it only lasted three days.” I myself had a criticism; there were points in the film when I found the use of a very modernistic, new-agey piece of music to be intrusive and out of place. And we both felt that a scene near the end of the movie, when a Vietnamese commander comments on the battle, to be improbable and faintly absurd. But these are nit-picky quibbles. WE WERE SOLDIERS is a damn fine movie. I’ll give Randy, who served two tours of duty in Vietnam, the last word: “It may not be ‘the’ Vietnam movie. I don’t think there could ever be ‘the’ Vietnam movie. But they get everything right. That’s how it looked and sounded, and that’s what I saw, and this is the best movie about Vietnam I’ve ever seen.”

This is war and it truly is hell. Outnumbered on the field and backed by the politically driven Defense Department of the time, one battalion finds itself outnumbered and fighting for its life in the jungles of Vietnam.

A recent reviewer here mistook what this movie was about. It is NOT about America’s war in Vietnam and all the ideology behind it. Its about a battle that occurred in the early years of that war between a new type of specialized fighting unit and a very determined enemy. America wanted to engage the enemy for the first time and this is the battle. The only politics involved here is the decision not to declare a National Emergency thus allowing the Army’s most experienced soldiers to leave at the end of their enlistments, when ironically they were most needed. This movie is about a battalion commander training his unit, getting orders and shipping off to war. It also gives an excellent look at what the wives had to endure during that terrible time.

If one wants to look at the politics of this war, check out HBO’s Path to War. Path to War shows the speech were LBJ sends this unit, the Air Cav, to Vietnam and the political reasoning behind it. It goes through LBJ’s escalation and McNamera’s change of heart on the winnablity of the war. Highly recommend it.

Anyway, in realism this ranks up there with Saving Private Ryan. By reading the book you get a much better grasp of what happened as well as the story not told of what happened at LZ Albany. That encounter was even a worse then what happened at LZ X-Ray.

All told this movie gives the feel of how horrible, horrowing and confusing first-hand combat can be. One decision can lead to winning the day, or as the movie shows, getting yourself cut off and most of your men killed. As for accuracy to what occurred, a group of soldiers that were there appeared on The History Channel’s “Hollywood vs History” program and they concurred that it was 75-80% factual. 20 - 25% Hollywood. That’s probably a good ratio indeed. Oh, and the little American Flag at the end was real, not Hollywood. And Sam Elliot deserves an Academy Award for his portrait of American Hero Sgt. Major Basil Plumley.

This tale of a Christmas-loving dog who tries to help Santa make his deliveries is both cute and innocent enough for young kids and hip enough for their Gen X parents. For example there’s a great line that parodies the “you’re no Jack Kennedy” remark Lloyd Bentsen made to Dan Quayle in the 1988 VP debates. That’s going to go over the head of any kid, but they’ll be wondering why Mommy and Daddy think it’s so funny. And that’s not the only joke snuck in for the grown ups.

With a larcenous penguin as a companion, Olive meets interesting and interestingly-named characters as she heads to the North Pole to save Christmas. This special truly deserved its Emmy nomination and will entertain both you and your kids.

A last bit of trivia: When Drew Barrymore (the voice of Olive) was in Woody Allen’s musical, “Everyone Says I Love You”, she was the only star in it who was able to convince Woody her singing was so bad that she should have a voice double for her songs. That should make it all the more interesting when you get to hear Drew sing in “Olive, The Other Reindeer”.

How could you not love this story? The title alone will make you smile! But then someone got the great idea of animating this story of a small but brave little dog named Olive who jumps at the chance to join Santa’s team of reindeer when Blitzen is injured AND letting Drew Barrymore do the voice of Olive. By the time you recognize the voices of Dan Castallaneta, Ed Asner, Peter MacNichol and Michael Stipe, you realize that they all signed on because this is a quality holiday story. It has been a long time boys and girls since we have had a new one this good to enjoy during the holiday season. Even if you have not enjoyed the charming book by J. Otto Seibold and Vivian Walsh, you will adore the movie. Or visa versa. If you have kids they will want to watch this one over and over, but do not worry about it; you will not mind that one bit.

First of all, let me say this: If you’re planning on getting this set to see the version of the first 13 episodes that aired Cartoon Network, you’re sorely mistaken. These episodes were dubbed in 1995, and are fairly different from the newer incarnation. Not only are they heavily censored, but they are dub-only, and the discs are poorly encoded to boot. Funimation can’t release an uncut version of the of these particular episodes, because KidMark still holds the rights to them. However, since the 1995 dub only went to episode 13, the remaining 140 episodes of Dragon Ball can be found uncut in the other “_____ saga” DVD sets.

First and foremost in the differences between the new and old dubs: the music. Although the redub from Funimation uses the original Japanese score and English arrangements of the original themes, this uses its own score. The theme’s kinda catchy, and reminds me a bit of the ending theme to Mystical Adventure (movie 3), but the music in general reeks of a generic “American cartoon” quality that doesn’t fit the series too well. It’s mainly this that gives it a feel quite apart from the new version.

Then there’s the voices. Some of them will seem familiar to you if you’ve seen the first two dub seasons of DBZ, or live in part of the world that shows the International DBZ dub instead of Funimation’s. In general, they’re pretty good, but hard to get used to after all these years of hearing Funimation’s voice actors in these roles. The pronunciation that this dub used for “Kamehame-ha” gets pretty annoying, too.

The scripts are fairly accurate outside of the censorship (which there’s a lot of), but there are also the classic jokes-that-fall-flat typical of anime dubs aimed at children. Also worthy of note is that many of the lines from this dub carry over into at least the edited version of the new one, though there are some changes in the redub to bring it in line with the rest of FUNimation’s releases.

Censorship in this set is, for the most part, roughly equal to that of the version showed on Cartoon Network. It’s in different areas, though. Cut-wise, a little more of the video is left in, but it’s made-up for in some completely ridiculous use of digital paint and bad script rewrites. There’s even some extra footage thrown in the first few episodes, and added recaps in most of them (since true previous-episode recaps didn’t really start until about episode 22 or so).

One example of the goofy censorship in this version: Goku catches a fish in the first episode. In the re-dub seen on Cartoon Network, Goku is naked, though much of the scene is cut. In this version, all of the scene is left in, but Goku is wearing very poorly-drawn digital underpants. One major digital censor that carries over into the newer edited version is the use of American dollars on the fishing pole in episode 5 to catch Oolong (instead of Bulma’s panties); you may notice that, when the episode airs on Cartoon Network, Goku dives into the water nude, but is suddenly wearing underpants when he surfaces, due to the re-use of some (but not all) of the older dub’s footage for that one scene.

The feature “Curse of the Blood Rubies,” though touted as a “pilot” for the series, is actually a dub of DB movie 1, “Shenron no Densetsu” (”The Legend of Shenlong”), with some footage from episode 2 thrown in. I’m not quite sure why this was done, though it was probably either to replace a very perverted scene or just balance out the amount of cuts from the film… probably both.

Overall, I wouldn’t recommend getting this if you like Dragon Ball for its off-color and oft-perverted humor; the newer “saga” DVD sets will suit you fine. The jury is still out as to when these 13 episodes will appear uncut on DVD, but even so, only get this set if you’re really itching to see what Funimation intended all of the Dragon Ball franchise to be like when they first set out to dub the series: a mere shadow of its original self, aimed squarely at kids far too young to appreciate Akira Toriyama’s quirky sense of humor.

Dragonball is a really funny series, so I was very much looking forward to buying the DVD…until I saw it was only available edited and dubbed. WTF? I know the DB series, especially the original, are very popular among children. But there are many fans over 18 that would just like to enjoy the series without the nonsense editing. Have two versions - one edited English dub only, and one bilingual uncut. And I mean UNCENSORED as well as uncut. Give people the option to choose. I really don’t get it. Doesn’t Funimation WANT money?

And another thing, what is the deal with certain parents demanding that DBZ and DB be edited? Did you perhaps not realize it is insanely violent? Just because it vaguely resembles Disney doesn’t mean it has that same level of child friendly quality. And since when did we start editing cartoons? Why was Wiley E. Coyote and Popeye good enough for my parents to watch, but now all of a sudden I can’t see it uncut? Where’s Mighty Mouse to save us from this nonsense?

This whole censoring garbage has gone too far. Did you know that Crystal Communications recently banned songs from their radio stations that are anyway even remotely related to NY’s WTC attacks? Everyone from Megadeth to Buddy Holly. Frank Sinatra’s “New York, New York” is banned! Ridiculous!

Oops, I started ranting. To sum up: DB is funny. DB on DVD censored is NOT funny.

The first film from Disney focused on a 3D version of her concert and television show personality but this time around, “Hannah Montana: The Movie” takes to the big screen and takes a more serious look at Miley Cyrus’s character as her pop star identity has now affected her family and he friendship and has come to the point that the lifestyle of a popstar has gotten to her head.

The film is directed by Peter Chelsom (”Shall We Dance”, “Serendipity” and “Town & Country”), a screenplay by Daniel Berendsen (”Sabrina, the Teenage Witch”, “The Cheetah Girls: One World”) , composer John Debney (”The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor”, “Spider-Man 3″ and “Sin City”) and cinematographer David Hennings (”Strange Wilderness”, “Blue Crush” and “Ice Princess”).

For those not familiar with the television series, former music artist Robby Ray Stewart (Billy Ray Cyrus) has moved his family (which include Miley, played by Miley Cyrus, and her older brother Jackson, played by Jason Earles) from Tennessee to Malibu in order to manage his daughter Miley’s music career. But in order to keep sanity at their home and keep their family together, he and Miley has kept secret identities and Miley dons a blonde wig and goes by the name Hannah Montana. Along with her best friend Lilly Truscott (Emily Osment) and friend Oliver Oken (Mitchel Musso), who also take on disguises, help protect Miley’s secret.

In “Hannah Montana: The Movie”, the film picks up with Hannah Montana’s career doing quite well and is now managed by Vita (Vanessa Williams). While Vita is successfully booking Hannah in various, major events, the fame has kept her busy to be with family (to celebrate Jackson’s entrance to college) and Lilly’s birthday party. To make things worse, a member of the paparazzi is trying to figure out Hannah Montana’s secret.

After Hannah ends up getting into fight with Tyra Banks over some shoes and getting plastered on the newspapers and disrupting Lilly’s birthday party by coming as Hannah Montana, Robby Ray feels that his daughter Miley can’t balance her time as a family member and friend and is focusing too much of her life as Hannah Montana and thus tricks her to going to Tennessee (instead of an award ceremony in New York).

Hannah is not pleased that her father has tricked her and prevented her from attending the award show and is upset that he dragged her to the farmlife in Tennessee. But Robby Ray wants her to remember where she came from and that Tennessee was their home before California.

While in Tennessee, Miley tries to adjust to the slow-paced life and meets an old friend when she was younger named Travis Brody (Lucas Till) who she becomes closer too, while her father Robby Ray gets closer to Lorelai (Melora Hardin), but with both of them having to live secret lives, can Miley or Robby Ray ever be able to have a normal life?

“Hannah Montana: The Movie” comes with three discs. The first is the Blu-ray Disc, the second being the Digital Copy and the third is the DVD.

VIDEO & AUDIO:

“Hannah Montana: The Movie” is featured in 1080p High Definition with an aspect ration of 1:85:1. For the most part, the film is absolutely vibrant. There are many outdoor scenes that showcase the film’s color. May it be the shot at Lilly’s birthday party at Santa Monica Beach to the lush area of Tennessee. The film definitely showcases a broad spectrum of colors, all of which are sharp, clear and absolutely eye-popping. For the most part, David Hennings did a great job with utilizing the environment with this film and overall, picture quality is magnificent.

As for audio, this is probably the first time I have seen Disney sport an English 7.1 DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack (the film is also presented in French and Spanish 5.1 Dolby Digital). The dialogue is crystal clear and as much as this film is dialogue driven, with it also being somewhat of a musical as well, music plays a big part of this film and sounds fantastic. Definitely good utilization of surrounds to pick up crowd ambiance or the animals at the farm but for the most part, this is a film where dialogue is king and music is also a big part of the film. Thus the soundtrack is quite crystal clear, the lossless audio definitely makes the music come alive.

As for subtitles, “Hannah Montana: The Movie is presented in English SDH, French and Spanish.

A DVD is included and sports a widescreen (1:85:1) - enhanced for 16×9 televisions and an audio soundtrack sporting a Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound soundtrack.

JUDGMENT CALL:

When it comes to “Hannah Montana: The Movie”, it’s almost similar to what I had to say about “The Jonas Brothers: 3-D Concert Experience” in that these films are created for their fans.

“Hannah Montana” is a popular children’s television show with a large following and I have watched many television shows with my son and although I’m not as familiar with her music, every decade there are shows that will appeal to their young fans and many of those who scratch their heads and just don’t get why people find it so appealing. In the 80’s we had “Kids Incorporated”, in the 90’s we had “Saved By the Bell” and although Saturday morning teen shows and afternoon teen shows on network television are a thing of the past, these shows have continued on the Disney Channel and “Hannah Montana” is simply a popular series with a lot of merchandising behind the series and its star Miley Cyrus.

And those who are not fans, they are going to criticize and those who never cared for Hannah Montana or Miley Cyrus, it’s a given that they are not going to give a care for this film.

But how did I feel about the film? As a guy who tends to write a lot about teen or young entertainment worldwide, may it be their music or television careers, I enjoyed the film. Of course, it all comes from my knowledge of the series and knowing how quarky the television series is but also knowing the difficult the character of Miley Stewart has in juggling both worlds of a normal teenager and a pop star.

But what I found more interesting is seeing Robby Ray stepping down and knocking Miley off her high horse. He notices that the fame is getting to her head and that if he doesn’t change things now, he’s going to lose that daughter who was always caring for her family and her friends.

So, when it comes to the dramatic scenes, I enjoyed watching that part. As for the music, this is more geared for her fans. Obviously, with her single “The Climb” and the soundtrack of this film doing so well on the Billboard Charts, it’s quite evident that she has a strong fandom of fans that are passionate for her music. The film is not “High School Musical” and every scene is full of music and a little on drama, it’s quite the opposite where there are more acting scenes and music plays a more important part towards the second half of the film. Also, you get music from Taylor Swift and Rascal Flatts and both offer an incentive to check out the film as well.

There was a superhero-esque (or more like “Spider-Man 2″) type of storyline near the end which I won’t get into but overall, I suppose that those who have watched her television show will find out if Miley Stewart or Hannah Montana will be the last persona standing.

For the most part, I found the film to be enjoyable, fun and it was good to see Miley Cyrus take on an emotional scene. I thought that the ending scene with the talent and film crew doing “The Hoedown Throwdown Dance” was hilarious and fun and for the most part, I’m quite confident that fans of Miley Cyrus and Hannah Montana are going to have a great time with this release.

As for the Blu-ray release, you get a ton of special features and as typical of Walt Disney Studio Home Entertainment releases, its one company where you know that their releases are going to be given absolute awesome picture and audio quality. And I can definitely tell you that this 3-Disc release will definitely be well worth it for the Miley Cyrus and Hannah Montana fans.

Overall, presentation and audio wise and the content included on this release is magnificent but as for the film, it all comes down to whether or not you are a fan of Miley Cyrus or her television show. Otherwise, if you had no care in the world for her music or the show, then you know this release is not for you. But for those who are passionate about her music and her series, then I can tell you that this Blu-ray release is highly recommended!

I first watched this show on the History channel at the beginning of last winter and liked it immediately. So I pre-ordered the DVD on amazon right away. It arrived last week and is currently making the rounds in my office!

Many a time, I have visualized how our precocious planet formed and evolved based on paleobiological evidence. I always get a feeling of euphoria whenever I imagine a pristine Earth with dynamics that have been changing over mind-numbing time scales. Well, the graphics in this show come pretty close to my own imagination.

The playback, divided by mostly uneven time segments, starts at around 4.4 billion years ago and eventually works its way to the last ice age before briefly dwelling on the planet’s future. There is a time slider that briefly appears at the start of each time segment. Yes, dinosaurs are mentioned and shown but only briefly. Yup, stromatalites are in there as well along with Trilobites. It should be noted that the Cambrian Explosion and the Carboniferous are mentioned. For some reason, I was surprised to learn that granite first formed several billion years ago.

Other subjects discussed in depth include plate tectonics (continents, mountains, etc.), land inhabitation by flora and marine animals and super-volcanoes. The DVD ends with a bunch of scientists dwelling on the future of Earth. I decided not to read too much into their predictions as I won’t be around if/when what they predict happens.

I’ve had this DVD on autobuy and must say what a treasure it is. We have watched it countless times, my hubby and I, as we enjoy series like these.

We loved every minute of it and the digital graphics was superb, very realistic. You sit there riveted to your screen as you watch things unfold. It’s mind-boggling, watching how the earth was created.

Earth has a past we can never comprehend, a present we live in and take for granted and a future that is just too scary to contemplate. But all in all, what an amazing planet we live in.

This DVD takes us on a journey to the very beginning. 4.5 billion year to be precise, when the planet was formed by meteors colliding in space.

Earth goes from a seething hellish mass of fiery molten rock,through numerous major changes that takes billion of years and finally to the present day wonder we live in.

And that is not all, we also have a glimpse into the future, when Earth will likely end up as barren and lifeless as Mars. Now, there’s a scary thought.

But it seems we don’t have to panic just yet, according to the experts we still have a few billions years to go before earth becomes hell again. Phew, that’s a relief! Quite frankly anyone would be scared of it!

This is another DVD worth the money spent.

This is a great compressor for what it is designed for which is finish carpentry. I really like the lower noise factor in the oilless design. My only dislike is they did not build this compressor with the intent to be able to attach a water vapor trap to prolong the life of pneumatic nail guns. I was able to put one on with some creative thinking and reconfiguration of the air flow which cost me my time and an extra 40 dollars. Aside from from the one dislikable aspect of the design this is still a great compressor.

I do residential remodeling, so I’m always using a compressor–inside the house, or outside. I have a Porter-Cable 6 gallon pancake compressor that was part of a kit, and a good buy to get me started, but the PC is NOISY, so I hate to take it indoors. And it’s relatively heavy. The DeWalt was just what I was looking for. It’s quiet, and as it turns out, it usually has enough capacity to run either the brad nailer or finish nailer, regardless of the job (inside or out). Much lighter to pack and carry, too.

This compessor was very quite and worked well for about 13 months then the motor started smoking. When I took it in for repair the cost was going to be almost as much as a new unit. Needless to say it sits in my shop collecting dust.

If you are looking for a monitor to support an Nvidia 3d goggles setup, this is the best monitor available currently. If you are not looking to get 3d goggles running (which requires true 120hz), this is a very overpriced monitor for what you get, larger higher resolution monitors (by Samsung also) are available at a better price. Monitor quality is very good, just overpriced.

I am sure the product is good but since I can’t give ANT Online a review because I had to cancel my order I warn others here ..they show as in stock when you order…but when you order they have none. They also charge ridiculous shipping. They took me out of the market and now no one hase these in inventory.

I’m already runnin’ 2x BFG 512mb 9800GT OCX Series in SLi Mode…so I basically got the GTX275 for free in my mind :)!!! (which I will use on next PC build during tax season The SLi 9800GT’s run the 3D flawless on all my games I have attempted at the 120hz 1680×1050 - UT3, Monkey Island - Launch Screaming Narwhal, Wolfenstein (2009), NFS Series, Age of Mythology!!!!

I needed a new monitor and wanted the 3D Glasses ability, so I had to go with the BEST IN THE BUSINESS!!! After all nVidia did base there 3D off of Samsungs Display here, which was the first “Official 3D Monitor”!!! This is my 3rd Samsung monitor I have owned, the other 2 are still workin on my “older” Gaming rigs!!!! I have 2 other decent brand LCD’s, but DO NOT compare to Samsungs quality displays!!!

Only thing bad to say bout this monitor is: I suggest an HDMI input, and Higher Res capability (specifically 1920×1080 for “FULL BluRay TRUEHD”)
