Given the recent reports on the potential health risk from non-stick cookware, my family decided to go stainless. I liked the performance of clad cookware but reckoned that it might not be a wise choice financially to go all out with All-Clad before I have my own cooking show. The candidates came down to 3 product lines, Anolon Advanced Clad, J.A. Henckels International Classic Clad and Cuisinart Multiclad Pro. The best price I could find for them were all under $200 for 7 pieces, with Anolon having 10 pieces. Being all constructed in full clad, they seem to differ mostly in the handle design before I can do a performance comparison.

Henckels has a huge and unconventional handle. My first impression was it might not fit in my kitchen well. However, it was not until recently that I tried one at a local store. The pan balances well and has one of the most comfortable handles that I ever put my hands on. However, my family needs a larger stock pot and the included 6-quart one doesn’t really serve our need.

Anolon has a silicon rubber handle. It’s said to withstand the high heat in the oven. However, due to aesthetic preference and concerns about putting synthetic materials in high heat along with food, we decided to go with the Cuisinart set. In the meantime, we separately bought an Anolon Advanced Clad 12″ stir fry pan.

The Cuisinart set is a very well made traditional tri-ply cookware with all metal handles. The built differences between Cuisinart and All-Clad is so insignificant to me that it makes the several-hundred-dollar saving and having a set of quality stainless steel cookware set truly a joy. The finish of the Cuisinart pans was superior to the Anolon stir fry pan. However, Anolon’s silicon rubber handle obviously is more functional and practical than metal handles since it never becomes slippery or hot in your day-to-day use. I guess this would come down to a personal preference.

The pans both brown well and distribute heat quickly and evenly. The cleaning is also a breeze as long as you heat the pans briefly before cooking. Overall, I’m very satisfied with this purchase.

I’ve been using this stuff almost daily since I got married two and a half years ago. We couldn’t bear to ask our friends and family to buy us overpriced cookware, but we wanted high performance, so we registered for this instead. No regrets. Though you’ll need more pans than this eventually, I have zero complaints for this as a starter set.

The pan sizes are great for the everyday meals that I usually cook, although most folks will need to add a 10-12 inch saute pan. The rims are great for pouring and the handles actually stay cool stove top. Sticking and clean up have not been a problem. I would say that the pans create too little fond. The skillet is also a little slow to regain temperature after adding thicker cuts of meat. The main concern is an issue with the stainless steel interiors. There are specs of dull metal (exposed aluminum?) developing on the interior of the pots except the skillet. One sauce pan actually has a finger sized spot of exposed aluminum near the lip that I didn’t see when I first examined them. The interiors of the pots except the skillet, easily discolor from heat but recuperate a little after consecutive uses. I called Cuisinart about the exposed aluminum. The rep had a scripted answer for my concern so it seems this may be a common problem. The expense of sending the pots to them for repair or replacement and being without pots for that time prohibits any warranty fulfillment. I’m leery about the cooking surfaces of pots and pans so I hope the problem doesn’t get worse and food begins to stick or worse the aluminum begins to break down and leech into the food. Also, the exterior that is not “brushed” is easily marred and scratched which might matter to someone interested in exhibiting them. Overall, these are “okay” for the money. Especially since one All-Clad piece can cost as much as I paid for this set.

At under $200 the price was good, but for someone from my socio-economic background it’s still a lot to spend on pots and pans. I’d rather not spend that much on fallible materials.

Everyone in my office thought this chair was uncomfortable. It doesn’t tilt back very far and it’s too firm. There is also no back support. I sent it back the day I ordered it.

I’m in a military unit that recently ordered hundreds of these. I have heard only praise for them. They are firm in a way that promotes good posture, which is important to you if you spend 12 hours a day behind a computer. They lean back, but not so far that you feel like you are going to fall out. It’s not good for your posture to lean back that far anyway.

the lumbar support is a huge plus for me, I am a taller guy and it still fits me perfectly. The shorter female that works in my office also enjoys them.

The adjustable arm rests complete the perfection, enabling you to make them match the height of your desk, allowing you rest your elbows while working if you want to.

For long term work on a computer desk this fits the bill.

It has everything I wanted without being over priced.

I had owned this framing nailer for about four years. I have been renovating my own home, and more recently a rental property we purchased. This tool has ALWAYS preformed flawlessly. The exaust can easily be redirected so when you have to change positions, or fit the nailer into a tigher space, you can always redirect the exaust way from your face. The method for changing nail sizes/lengths couldn’t be easier. You open the coil cover and squeese a release (right where you will be inserting the nails anyway), moving the nail “floor” up or down to the preset notches. Lengths are clearly marked so you can quickly get the coil set to the correct nail length. This nailer has NEVER given me any problems. I couldn’t be happier with it.

It handles a wide range of nails. I have used them all, saving me the need to buy a second smaller nailer for siding projects I’ve done.

I will be buying another one soon. Someone broke into my renovation project home and liberated this one from me.

I bought this about a week ago and have been using it ever since. I have a Mac and finding a multifunction unit that is Mac compatible hasn’t been easy. This unit, the MF4370DN, works great with my Mac. The lower models, the MF4350D and the MF4150D are NOT completely Mac compatible.

I couldn’t find any reviews for this item - so I will tell you everything I can about it.

I know there is some comparable Brother models out there, but have heard they surge the power in the room. I haven’t tested them, but I have a Brother laser printer and it makes all the lights in my home office dim when it gets ready to print. Also that model doesn’t duplex print (print/copy on both sides of the page. The MF4370DN does.)

This unit works great with my Mac - it scans, prints, copies, and receives faxes. I originally bought the Canon MF4350d which despite all the information I read is not entirely mac compatible, its scanner is not compatible with Macs, which was confirmed for me by talking with a Canon rep. It would be nice if they mentioned that on their website specs instead of wasting hours of my time and then having to drive 70 miles to return it. (I didn’t buy it from Amazon because they didn’t have it at the time.)

Canon support told me the MF4370dn is entirely mac compatible - just hit the Scanner button on it twice so it is in “USB SCANNING MODE.”

Overall I’m pretty happy with this unit. The print quality is great, the faxing speed and quality is much faster than my old thermal fax. The copier works great. The scan quality off the glass is great. The duplexing feature works great. Unit is very, very quiet - in fact I can’t hear it when it’s on or sleeping.

Now I can finally get rid of three bulky devices - my fax, laser printer, and scanner, and replace it with this one unit.

Cons:

1) No software comes with this unit that allows you to create a single PDF from the Auto Document Feeder. So if I wanted to scan 10 pages through the feeder and create a single PDF it can’t do it. It would create 10 different documents in your scanning program, then you would have to save each one as a PDF and use another program to create a single PDF. After hours of research I discovered Acrobat Professional can create a single PDF directly off the auto document feeder. Acrobat Professional is an expensive program at $449 which is available for Mac. I happen to have it and used it successfully to create a multipage pdf. On Acrobat Professional you go to FILE > CREATE PDF > FROM SCANNER. It worked great. But some kind of software should really be supplied from Canon that can do that. Most people are not going to have Acrobat Professional and certainly won’t buy a $450 program just to be able to use a $300 device. I know there is some scanning software that comes with the unit, but it’s for Windows (and not sure what it can do.)

2) Auto document feeder also is giving me some trouble - it is scanning letter size pages as legal size. So there is all this white area at the bottom of my scans. Something I will have to talk to Canon about how to fix, if possible.

3) My home phone number doubles as my fax line so I run the telephone line from the wall into the unit — and then then out to my phone. Whenever I use my phone to make a call - the MF4370DN turns on and starts to blink “Processing Data” and a green light on the side of the unit starts to blink as well. And it stays on for the whole call. Now when I talk on the phone I gotta see this light blinking in my periphery. Kind of annoying and a waste of energy if you ask me.

4)The instructions for using the scanner were not very clear. I installed what I thought was a scanning program on a CD that came with the device. After I installed it I thenspent ages looking for the scanning application which I just installed. Turns out there is no application, instead what you are really installing is the driver. You need to use your own scanning program - I use Photoshop.

5) Every time I want to scan something I need to push the Scan button twice on the device to put it into USB scan mode. It would be nice if it would automatically detect how it was going to transmit. Also you have 1.5 to 2 minutes from when you push SCAN twice to when the machine puts itself to sleep. So a few times now I have tried to scan and couldn’t because the SCAN option timed out on the machine.

6) The manual is not Mac friendly. If it was it would have saved me a couple hours figuring out most of the above. I had to call Canon 3 times or so to get the kinks worked out.

But I must say that Canon technical support is bar none the best customer support I have ever experienced. A human will pick up the phone almost immediately and you are speaking to an educated, polite, sympathetic, and a very knowledgeable person who’s first language is english and they live here in the good ol’ USA. A+ on that Canon.

Despite the problems settings this up - I am happy with my purchase. As I am the first person to review this I am glad to pass on what I learned to help others make an informed choice and if you happen to buy it I hope that I helped save you some time setting it up.

Thanks!

I bought the printer about 3 weeks ago. It prints well, faxes great, but the scanning is where if falls short.

It came with the canon software for enabling to scan over the network. The box says it scans at 600 x 1200, but that ONLY from the USB connection. The network scanning limits you to only 300dpi. Customer support says I can get the full 600 if i connect the USB port. But the reason I bought it was to use via the network! Sounds like they weren’t honest in their product description.

I would recommend another printer such as the comparable brother but I have had a lot of bad experiences with my previous brother products so I will stick with this one despite its shortcoming and hopefully wait for a firmware or software up date that will allow the full scanning resolution via the network.

Keep in mind, it wasn’t too long ago when you had to purchased a $600+ printer to get the features of this one. Also, I do not like Brother printers. They are the generic brand of printers and have barely been supported by electronic retailers until recently.

This is my second Canon laser jet. The first was an all in one (print, copy, scan) MF1330. While it made flawless copies; it had no fax, could only connect to one PC through USB, and lacked the ADF (automatic document feeder). I have three PC’s in my house. Two desktops and one laptop. The two desktops are running 64-bit Vista, and I have searched high and low for a modem that would work with a 64-bit OS. The only ones I found are not natively supported in Vista and cost $80+. The others were all external. If you don’t know this, the Canon laser jets have a very fast first page out time. So when they say 23 pages per minute, it doesn’t mean after a two minute warm up period. When you click print the PC (depending on speed) takes a few seconds plus to process before sending. With my computer, the entire print process took about 5 seconds before the page was being printed. Very nice! Imediately I noticed how quiet this printer is compared to my last canon and my Oki C5200ne color laser. Amazing for a laser jet. I hope they didn’t sacrifice life expectancy or something else to get it.

I was a little disappointed. This printer didn’t turn out to be everything I thought it would be, which is why I only gave it 4 stars. First of all, you must know Windows Fax & Scan does not work with this printer. That is the let down of the year to me, but it’s not Canon’s fault… not necessarily. Turns out WF&S only uses WIA scanning drivers and this printer uses TWAIN. Thanks Microsoft. The computer never directly communicates with the printer, so the faxing is treated like printing. As a result, the faxing portion of the software doesn’t work with it either.

This printer DOES come with software for scanning. It’s burried on the CD, and you must explore the CD to find it. I believe it’s only for the PC, however. As the other poster said, I searched all over for the scanning software I thought I installed. Turns out it was just a driver. I own Adobe Photoshop and Acrobat, so it’s not much of a concern for me. They are both TWAIN compatible by the way. One thing I don’t like about this printer is the need to press the scan button prior to scanning. This is not very convenient for a network printer. It’s even worse if you have a long way to go to get back to your PC. By the time you get there, the thing may have gone back into power saving mode.

Still with it’s flaws, it’s definately a great buy compared to similar products of the past (which were bulkier, louder, and more expensive). It does what it says it can do. Print (double sided at that), scan over the network, fax from your PC, and it’s also voice line friendly! (No need for a dedicated fax line)It’s a great buy.

Came time to finish the lower level of our house and needed one of these gems to get the job done. Initially looked at the Porter Cable CFFN240N but without an oil lubricated pump there was no way I would have that thing running inside my house (Way too Loud). Makita came through big time when they introduced this machine, I can have the thing running next to me and keep a conversation going on my cell phone with no problem. Besides that the CFM on this baby is impressive for its size. 3.3CFM @90PSI. Make sure you note that it is rated at 90PSI because a lot of the other manufacturers rate on a 100PSI level. Best way to buy this is in the kit configuration where you get the brad nailer, hose, fittings, and fasteners for not much more money. This way everything comes to you in one package. If you are looking for a small compact compressor that has the capacity of the medium sized units, this is the one. Don’t forget the noise level!!

I’m pleased with the Makita MAC700KIT 2 HP Air Compressor Kit I purchased from Amazon.com. I did a fair amount of research and was tempted to purchase a Porter-Cable oil-free kit, but after borrowing a Craftsman (same as Porter-Cable)oil-free compressor from a friend, I decided to go with the oil lubricated Makita primarily because the unit is much quieter but also because I’m convinced the oil-based units have a longer life span. I’m in the finishing stage of installing hardwood floors. I started the Makita unit (after the required 20 minute lubrication “break-in”) and asked my wife what she thought about the noise level. “Not to bad since it’s outside”, she said, the only problem was, it was inside house in the next room over. The oil-free unit sounds like a jack hammer. I recommend the Makita unit, but it took a about 10 days to arrive, so if you want it earlier, pay extra for the shipping.

I’m very happy with this kit. Shipping was intact, nothing damaged, all parts/accessories included. Setup was straightforward. The compressor isn’t crazy loud; it’s just another motor running, quite acceptable. It’s easy enough to move around my garage, and luggable into the house when the time comes. The nailer works fine, although I haven’t used it under productive conditions, just tested it.

I’m most happy that this unit can drive an impact wrench for tire changes. I was concerned that its low CFM (3.3) wouldn’t be enough power but to my surprise it’s fine! I gambled and purchased a very low end, low CFM, Sears Companion 1/2 in. Impact Wrench, Mfr. model #19127. I can take lug nuts (80 ft./lbs torqued) off a 2002 Honda CR-V and the compressor doesn’t kick in until I’m working on the last (fifth) lug nut, and then it only runs for 20 seconds or so. There’s no holdup while the unit re-charges to full capacity.

One note about the oil plug: there IS an oil plug that came with my unit to replace the small temporary plastic plug after you fill it with oil. The actual plug is black and about two to three inches long and looks kinduv like a fat dipstick.

All in all, this kit fits my needs very nicely!

Update 9-18-2008 - Still going strong. I am very pleased with the summer power output of these panels. I wash them with a hose 1x/mo to keep the output current up. Measured before washing and after washing the panel efficiency is clearly a factor of how much dirt is on them. No problems long term on a roof though!

Update 2-20-2008 - goes with graph “photograph” #3 above - pink line is power and blue line is amps from the panel x 10 to share the graph. The X axis is panel voltage. Data was acquired using an Agilent dummy load with programmable voltage in 1V steps from 1V to 22V (open circuit voltage on the panel) on a partially cloudy day in winter sun. Expectations are for 2-3 times performace in summer sun provided the panels don’t get too hot. These are on my house roof laying flat on a 3/12 pitch facing due south which is suboptimal but easy for me to do. Be sure to read the photo notes. Sorry about the colors excel defaulted to!

This is a MPPT chart (maximum power point tracking) - you can see that the panels are optimized for charging a 12V wet cell right out of the box. Charge current turns on when battery voltage drops down to 13.0 VDC and turns off at 14.2 VDC with the supplied charge controller in the kit.

The only other interesting fact in 2 months is to keep your panels clean. My maximum current was 5.0 A on a cold morning with bright sun until it rained hard and washed the panels clean. The current went up to 7.0 A maximum right after the rainstorm. Below is the original review - these panels have been running constant for 2 months now into 3 parallel deep cycle marine cells (315 AH) connected to the prosine inverter below to drain the energy made.

When reading the power/current chart you should keep in mind the amps have been multiplied by 10 so they use the same Y axis (so 20A on the chart corresponds to 2.0 A panel current) Watts are actual volts*amps. This was taken in the winter with partial clouds - expectations are for a X3 improvement during summertime but its still february and I’m in the northern hemisphere so we’ll have to wait and see. Basically an MPPT charger won’t gain but a few watts with this panel so it’s not a good investment unless you already have one laying around.

(Begin original review after buying panels)

I never seem to be overwhelmed by the latest shipment of product from China, but this one seems to show some promise and shows signs of good cost engineering and a complete design that can be set up quickly by one person with very little effort. I’d give it 5 stars if it were well packed, but my purchase turned into a shipping fiasco.

Most ALL solar installations are rated in $/watt much like new homes are rated in $/sq ft. We’ll get to the sq ft bit later. Here you are getting 60W for 320 dollars or about 5.33 $/watt. Compared to a similar wattage panel, the BP solar 365U rated at 65W and priced (street) at 399 or 6.13 $/watt the amazon package seems to be a good deal when you consider it comes complete less battery (we’ll hit that one later too)

In fact, the amazon package deal includes a xantrex 175 watt inverter with a .15A “idle” current designed for solar systems where current consumption must be minimized. It even includes a simple diode/switch “charge regulator” with 2 leds to indicate panel voltage and battery is full but lacks the ability to tell it what type of battery you are using (full is defined at 14.2 volts give or take so it’s for wet/flooded cells). Neither of these are big buck items, but they do set you up for a complete small scale solar kit minus the battery out of the box, which is impressive.

Oh yes, the battery. I also ordered the duracell 480W inverter+28AH battery with this panel so I’d have a battery. Also made by Xantrex, it’s a nice piece to complete the system. I made the mistake of ordering it with the solar panels (read on)

So how does China produce a complete kit for a lower $/watt price than professional solar companies like BP solar, GE, Kyocera, etc? Well - it’s the sq ft part we forgot about for a while. This uses 4 panels @ 15W each to get up to 60 watts with a simple parallel adapter included in the kit. The BP solar is one panel about the size of 1 of these 15W panels, or put another way, is 1/4 the sq footage. So if you are planning on covering your roof with these, think again because you’d need a really big house and have lots of 7A charge diodes and 175W inverters kicking around when you are done. The reason for the 4:1 size difference is the China panels are made using a silicon deposition on glass technique with a very thin film and correspondingly thin output, while other manufacturers use a silicon wafer production method that is roughly 4x more efficient in area, and somewhat more expensive as a result.

Ok - now onto packaging. We need to get this from China to Amazon and finally to the consumer. On the first attempt FEDX carefully placed my fragile glass solar panels on the concrete then put 2ea 60lb batteries on top of them, cracking the glass on all 4 panels. After returning that to amazon, we tried again, this time without the batteries and shipping the system by itself. FEDX again noted shipment damage which wrecked 1 of the 4 panels, but running on 3/4 panels it does work, just not with full output. Amazon has given up because they will only ship and ruin something twice instead of making fedx pay up for piling 120 lbs of batteries on top of the glass panels and poking through the box & styrofoam the second time so I am still in negotiation with them about the shipment, however the product does deserve mention while I have it.

PERFORMANCE:

The design is actually quite well done. You can make (with 4 panels) a 12V (actually 15V) x 4A system, or a 30V x 2A or a 60V x 1A configuration depending on your power inverter and battery collection. For me, this will always be tied into a 12VDC bus so it is fine as shipped, but the flexibility is there if you have other voltages in use. There is no skimping on wire with 16 foot cords on each panel which helps to minimize power lost in the wire since each panel has its own cordset going to the combiner, after which runs are kept short. On a cloudy day I was able to get 2 amps from 3 panels (30 W) - in full sun it peaked at 5.91A with 3 panels, so the Chinese manufacturing has under-rated their output as 90W from a 1/4 dead 60W panel in winter sun is doing very good - I’d like to know how it performs in the summer!

As for mounting, a very clever system was designed to support the panels out of 1″ PVC tubing with elbows and T’s - all of this is assembled with a singular bolt/wingnut style and the pipes have slots milled into them to ensure that the panels will line up one way or another without breaking after you get them. It has a prop-up leg system for use on the ground or can lay flat if placed on a roof that is already angled towards the sun. There isn’t a provision for connecting multiple systems together, however you could make one out of sprinkler pipes you probably have.

All this really needs to be a well designed solar kit is 1) better packaging and 2) a battery. Even with 25% of my panels broken and removed from the system, it still managed to charge a car battery in under 1 cloudy winter day.

I’m impressed with the product, however disappointed with the shipper. I’ve also run up against Amazon’s policy of two strikes and they are out meaning they won’t negotiate for repair or replacement as the shipper on my behalf. I can return it alltogether or pay 100% for 75% of a system so it’s probably going back tomorrow (monday) - but my testing this weekend has shown that the product warrants consideration for people who

A) Need to keep their starting batteries charged year round (2nd cars, generators, etc) outside where AC power is not convenient.

B) Do not have A/C power at all and would like to run a small refrigerator (purchase a Xantrex Technologies Prosine 1,000 to 1,500-Watt Power Inverter #1000 TRUE SINEWAVE power inverter to run any motor load without damage)

or

C) Have lots of roof space and are looking at the lowest cost/watt installation complete with mounting hardware.

Don’t forget the battery - and don’t have it delivered with your solar panels. As for emergency power, 60 watts won’t do much for you but keep your generator battery charged and ready to go when the power fails. My natural gas genset is rated for 12,000 watts or 200 of these 60 watt 4-panel kits (800 panels) which would cost $64,000 and still not provide power at night, like the quiet genset does. With 12,000 watts I can comfortably run my whole house. Considering these natural gas gensets can be had for under $3000 they are clearly the best solution for whole house power backup systems.

My use was to keep my seldom used 12VDC batteries all charged in the back yard. Regretably, amazon’s lack of proper packaging and refusal to negotiate with FEDX over damage means I’ll probably put in a 12VDC charger inside my house and run the low voltage 12VDC wiring outside to the batteries that need a trickle charge.

One last reliability issue - having seen 5 broken panels now I can see an advantage to the professional panel systems - these use the glass just as a cover & weatherproofing plate. The cells underneath are not damaged if the glass breaks. On the amazon system, the cells are deposited on the back of the glass, so if it breaks, by default so does the entire cell.

The panels are installed on my garage roof, wired in to a battery bank and inverter which primarily functions as a very large (4KW) uninterruptible power supply for the house. So far, everything is working fine. They keep the batteries topped off without using power from the grid.

Like most manufacturer’s specs, the 60 watt claim is hard to realize. The panels’ current output is about 3.2 amps under bright sun, which yields only about 45 watts into a 12 volt gel cell battery at 14.2 volts. The panels can output about 20 volts which would indeed yield 60 watts, but not while connected with the included charge controller. A MPPT controller would achieve 60 watts, however.

The included controller is acceptable in that it works as advertised. One good thing about it is that it does not shunt the panels when the battery is charged, it actually opens the circuit, which means the excess panel output would be available for other uses. I intend to build another device for charging another set of batteries after the primary set is charged.

The included inverter works, but I did not use it in the system. Instead, I’ll just keep it around for a portable inverter.

Also, I did not use the PVC pipe stand included with the system, instead mounting the panels directly to the roof.

The kit did include a variety of connectors allowing use with cigarette lighter plugs and jacks, alligator clips, and hardwire, but the charge controller is only usable if hardwired. I strongly recommend the charge controller be used, as the panels can easily overcharge most any 12 volt battery if a charge controller is not wired in.

We bought this a few months ago. We live in Phoenix, AZ (”Valley of the Sun”), so this has plenty of opportunity to work. We have it plugged into 2 marine batteries (like car batteries, but bigger), and we have an inverter connected to those. The inverter is in the house, and the batteries are outside. The wire goes through the wall. We plug things into the inverter.

This was easy to put together. You have to buy the batteries, but this came with everything else.

I can run my laptop all day, as well as recharge the cell phones and Wii remotes. My husband can also run his laptop. If we only get on the laptops after work, we can run them well into the night. I’ve had to switch to grid power a couple of times if I’ve used my laptop all day, but I’ve never had to switch over if I’ve only used it during the evening. (This doesn’t count the few rainy days we’ve had. Yes, once in a while it rains in Phoenix.)

This is not the most efficient solar panel set, but it’s very good for starting out and learning about solar power. It’s inexpensive enough to set up and charge all your rechargeable stuff whenever you need it, as long as you live in a fairly sunny area.

Oh, as an experiment, I plugged the vacuum cleaner into the inverter, which promptly started screaming for help. (The inverter has an alarm, apparently.) This whole set-up CANNOT handle this kind of power draw. You have to unplug everything and turn the inverter off and let it just sit a while and reset before plugging in your lower power things again.

You’re not going off the grid with this set-up, but you’ll save yourself a few bucks a month. And you get to be smug whenever anyone talks about going green. “Well of course, our solar array has lowered our carbon footprint considerabley. Shall we go for an organic smoothie now?”

I have looked all of the polishers available here at Amazon. Using something at 1750 RPMs might be ok for some finishes, but to get true high quality gloss, you need a 2400 RPM machine. Less than that, you don’t bring up deep gloss. More than that, with the speed of a sander or grinder (4500=6000 RPM) will burn your finish right up.
This Milwaukee has the right speed, and it is variable if you want to go into a different level of polishing, than the automotive level. With 11 amps in the motor, you are sure to have the kind of power that will guarantee a constant speed, even when you have a 7″ bonnet loaded with compound.
Another great feature is the locking collet. I had a body shop for 20 years, did a lot of high end cars, personally spent more hours on a 7″ polisher than would be believable if I stated it, seriously, and locking collet would be a dream come true. Most polishers have an allen wrench based nut in the center of them, which holds the rubber backing pad to the shaft. When it is time to change a pad, it is often frustrating, because of the center nut. All you can do to change the pad is hold on to the backing pad, and use an allen wrench. That resulted in a slipping backing pad, sliding around the spindle. To have a locking collet is an engineering dream for a polisher.
Since polishers require a lot more torque, and beefy components, than a grinder, it is comforting to know that this Milwaukee has helical gearing, and all ball and roller bearings.
I have come to appreciate the heavy duty build on Milwaukee tools. Their new Lok Tor cordless drills are the highest torque in the industry. Their 11 amp sawzall is the best, and the list goes on.
I noticed a comment in the editorial review, that a pro might need more speed. NOT. This polisher covers the proper speed. A burn mark in a polished finish, looks like a raising of the material, in a little series of ridges. Another peril of too much speed is a quick burn through the finish, revealing base coats for example primer. I mention this because this is the heavy duty unit. You don’t need something faster, or more powerful. You would be hard pressed to find another tool out there that does the job better. The competition, with less power, slower speeds, and that funny handle that goes over the top of the polisher is not what you want. I went into the local home center and felt that handle position just today. It is uncomfortable for polishing. You want your hand out out to one side of the head, just the way this Milwaukee is. They further enable you to choose a side, in the event that you are left handed. It gives you a wider stance with a side handle, which equals better control.
All in all this is a five star piece of equipment. It costs a little more than the competition, but the extra money is put in the tool. Highly recommended.

This is the best High speed Polisher i have evre used. It’s light and easy to use.not only has it out lasted my outher polishers it stil works like it’s new. It also has the best feel to the hands,it never heats up or slows down it’s one Heavev Duty tool.

This is the third polisher I have purchased, the first two were inexpensive Craftsman units and neither lasted very long. I have owned a Milwaukee sawzall for twenty years and it has been great. This Polisher is every bit up to the quality I expected. I have used it for polishing and sanding and its power and speed range are up to the tasks. Changing sanding disks or polishing bonnets is quick and easy with no tools required, also the speed control feature makes using the unit almost fool proof. The Bottom line is you get what you pay for.

This is one incredible tool. Mine came with a adjustable stop rod that is not shown in the picture. It is built into the side handle and requires no tools to adjust its length, just press on the spring loaded release and adjust the rod to the desired position or remove it if it is in the way. I use this tool to replace a much heavier corded model for doing overhead work. I am installing new drywall in a very old house that had plaster over plaster board wall construction. I have removed the plaster and plaster board on the exterior walls to facilitate the installation of insulation and modern wiring. The underlying structure wasn’t exactly designed for drywall. For instance the top plates were not aligned. The top 2×4 plate protruded into the room ½ to ¾ of an inch in some areas making it impossible to install the drywall with a square corner. I used a sharpened flat chisel blade and the hammer mode to quickly cut off the excess material using the lower top plate as a guide. Other than a flush cutting circular saw I can’t think of a tool that would have done this job any better, and it is probably safer than using a flush cutting circular saw overhead.

I love this tool. It is strong and compact. It uses my old ni-cad 18 volt batteries as well as my new V-18 Lithium batteries. I bought mine from Tool King at a compettive price and it arrived in the original Milwaukee “bare tool” box along with the product registration paperwork.

One vendor shipped the last tool Milwaukee tool I bought from them in a plain brown box, no Milwaukee packaging and didn’t include the operational part of the tool (the metal cutting blade) even though the product description stated it was included, and when I asked them to send it they just said no, ship it back at my expense if I wasn’t happy and pay the restocking fee. The entire process set my building project back several weeks. You can read my review of the Milwaukee metal cutting circular saws to get the full story (and be sure to look at the pictures), Amazon did compensate me some of my cost of returning the item but not all of it. Perhaps your results may be better but it has been my experience that some of these vendors are just a little better than others. It cost me a couple of bucks to figure out that the lowest priced vendor isn’t always the best choice. I have purchased a lot of tools from many vendors and have always had exceptional service except for my one bad experience. I will pay a couple of dollars more for the product and a couple of dollars less for the shipping and buy from a Vendor like Tool King to get the genuine original Milwaukee packaging and first rate customer service. When I purchased my Milwaukee SDS cordless drill from Took King the total cost of the product and shipping was less than $5 more than the lowest priced vendor.

I have uploaded a picture showing the adjustable stop rod that came with my drill.

This might well be the neatest battery operated drill one could ever own. This drill from Milwaukee might be as useful to the end user as it is hard to find. The drill is one of many in the Milwaukee line that are seemingly being sold off at discount prices to clear the shelves of their older 18volt technology. I found it quite cool that this tool would not only operate with the newer 18 volt lithium batteries but also with the older nicad batteries. It has a clutch that allows for drilling, hammer drilling, and hammer only. I must say that when I first took it out of the box, I installed one of my SDS chisels from an electric chipping hammer that I own. I noticed that the bit was sitting off center. Only then did I consult the directions and found that there is a setting on the clutch that allows you to turn the chuck 360 degrees until it is in the location that you want…To me, that is quite cool!! Using the drill in hammer mode was impressive to me considering that it is a cordless tool. Granted it is not going to challenge the performance of my Hitachi or similar electric hammers, but for light chipping, etc. it works very nicely indeed. Also, the bits used are of the SDS variety. Not everyone has this type of bit, but for heavy duty chiseling and hammer drilling it is hard to beat. I do believe Milwaukee sells a conversion chuck that allows you to use regular drill bits in an SDS drill like this one. On top of that for [...] dollars from [...] , boy what a bargain for quite the big tool! I have about six 18volt nicad batteries at home and love the opportunity to pick up these tools “only”. Next is the 18volt impact wrench for [...] bucks!! Also, for those contractors that want to use these bigger tools, get the three bay charger that Milwaukee sells. It keeps three batteries charging at once and even takes batteries that I removed from my job’s recycling bin and brought them back to life! Worth every penny!! But I digress….You will not be disappointed by this purchase for sure…..

I bought this because I have the batery and the charger for it already. The shipment was on time. The SDS Rotary Hammer work very good. I would recomended to anyone that needed this tool for the home remodeling.

If you were looking at getting a combo kit now is your chance to get a 2 HP unit instead of the 1.5 HP units. The softstart and self center bits work great both as a plunge router as well as a fixed base and the 2 HP soft start and mag body makes it easy to control as well as light weight.

The 2 HP unit has plenty of power to be used in a router table a nd if you can only afford one router don’t skimp for a few dollars more you get more power, variable speed and the bosch 2 HP variable speed router with the micro fine adjustments.

I have had the 1617EVS fixed based for over 6 months and the extra cost to buy the plunge router attachment added up to more than this whole kit with the storage case costs.

I bought the 1617EVSPK 2-1/4HP bosch combo router some 9 months ago and have logged a lot of hours on the machine. Overall I echo the positive comments that other users have provided re: power, versatility, ease of use, etc. There are two areas where the unit falls down, however. First is the base plate; although it is allegedly centered at factory, if you are doing close tolerance work (eg using a leigh dovetail jig) you will probably need to buy a base center and reset the base plate. This is a pain but at least it is fixable. A far more serious problem is the fact that the router seems to have developed a side to side wobble when used in plunge mode, so that the bit swings a fraction from side to side when plunging, despite my carefully applying pressure equally on both handles. Not a problem for many applications, as the swing is very small, but when close tolerances are a must (eg routing mortises) it is hard to achieve. I cut several dozen floating tenon mortises this weekend using a new spiral upcut bit, and half the mortises were 1/32″-1/16″ oversized, meaning I now have a lot more stock in my scrap bin. The unit does not appear to have any way to tighten up the plunge mechanism. This far more serious flaw makes it difficult to use for high end woodworking.

Bought this router after a week of research. Looked at porter cable, dewalt, and this bosch router. determined through reviews on this site as well as other reviews that the bosch was the router that I wanted after the first day, but decided to wait and read through some more reviews. Saw the Bosch 1617 router combo at Lowe’s for 219, but it was not the 1617evspk, which comes with a free edge guide/ circle cutter and also lists as 2 hp, may be the same motor, but I want the newer, updated router . Looked on amazon and found this router, the Bosch 1617EVSPK which came with a edge guide/circle cutter and the router mat for $219.00. I agree with another buyer who said that this router does very professional work and can make anyone look like they know what they are doing. Even my wife who has never used a router was able to use this with ease. It is very easy to switch between bases, clean design.

The included cast wrenches for changing bits are sign of a better quality router

and the edge guide/circle cutter is a must and a cinch to use. I like that it comes with functional carrying case that holds everything but the edge guide, even has places for most commonly used bits of both shank sizes. A major plus is depth adjustment that stays the same even after switching back and forth between bases; you don’t have to readjust and hope its the same depth. The router has a feel of solid design, cuts soft and hard woods like butter, no vibration and is quite. Slow start is a must to prevent damage when kicking on. I read complaints of the switch location, but has not really bothered me and I don’t know of a better place to put the switch where it would not create other problems. There is not really a better place to put the switch that would not interfere and either get dirty or turn the unit off/on accidentally. Flat top makes for easy bit changes and ensures that router does not turn itself on for those of us who do not unplug the unit (bad habit). The real wood handles make for a solid feel, instead of hollow plastic. The plunge base has an easy to reach lock that allows user to keep both hands on the router and minimize mistakes. A couple of thoughts on why I bought this router. When buying a router, could have bought 2 routers, 1 plunge and 1 fixed base, would have costed me the same for equal power, but not equal quality, and may need to buy separate accessories for both routers, like dust kit, edge guides, etc. I also figured I would spend at least $120 for a decent low end router, but would have to replace it after 4 years and would not have all the functions that I wanted. Rationalized that since getting the Edge guide for free, normally $40, took the price down; since most routers do not come with an edge guide or a circle cutter, especially one tool that does both. Figured that all the wood work that I would do, and plan to do, would only like to make the purchase once and have a nice router to boot, so I might as well buy it right the first time. I am not a hardcore woodworker, but routing is something that cannot be done by hand and the few times that I may use it you need the right equipment; it’s value is immeasureable. There is nothing worse than having bad tools or tools that are a hassle to use. This router is something that I may keep till I get really old and pass off to my kids, and will still be a great tool then. Simply could not waste my time and patience with a lesser quality router. Bosch really put a lot of time into designing this router and its carefull placement of things, even the switch. Free shipping through amazon and no tax saved even more than buying from store, another plus. Have recommended this router to several friends and they have nothing but good things to say about it. If you are into woodworking, would also recommend the Bosch 1594 3-1/4-inch planer, another well designed tool that performs better than expected, only way to describe is that it literally glides over the wood surface and no sanding is needed afterwards, who could ask for more?

Update: I have ran into 2 instances of the switch not working, probably due to dust on the contacts inside the switch. Not enough to change my rating though, since all it took was a little compressed air around the switch to get it working again. The second time I had to use Electric cleaning spray, found at your Pepboys, near the brake cleaner sprays. Hopefully in future designs they seal the switch off entirely. This router is still one of my most favorite tools.
