For the Love of NFL Football Helmets

February 5th, 2010 by lizeth9190

Football fans want to wear the helmet of the teams they root for - right? For the most part yes; they will wear the helmet of the team or teams they root for. But there are a good number of fans who wear the NFL football helmets of teams they do not necessarily root for. Heck, there are a good number of non-football fans who will wear NFL football helmets for the sake of fashion.

It may all sound superficial but let us be honest with ourselves. Do you remember rooting for a team not because they were good but because they had the coolest looking uniforms? Ladies, do you remember screaming your lungs out to cheer the star quarterback not because he has skills but because he looks hot? The same thing goes for football helmets; if the design looks good, no matter how much the team sucks, people still gravitate towards the team’s helmets. Of course, it would not hurt if the team ruled over Super Bowl. Still, a good design is a good design and it will appeal to people from all walks of life - NFL fan or not.

Fans can choose between authentic and replica helmets. Authentic helmets are, as the name suggests, the same helmets worn by professional players. The face masks are made of steel and the thickness of the padding conforms to league standards. In contrast, the face masks of replica helmets are made of plastic and the padding is made of Styrofoam.

There are a several major manufactures of NFL football helmets. The leading manufacturers of professional football helmets include Bike and Schutt.

Football is probably the only game that looks more painful than professional wrestling. Ironically professional football players were not required to wear protective helmets until the 1930s. Compared to the helmets of today, the early prototypes did not provide much protection.

The early football helmets were made of leather. Eventually the leather helmets were replaced with harness style helmets. Head related injuries prompted sports scientists and helmet manufacturers to improve the helmets further and the result is the NFL football helmets players proudly wear today.

The designs of the helmets do more than make a fashion statement; any design or logo change mirrors the growth and evolution of the teams. In the spirit of change, the NFL made it mandatory for all teams to have alternate or throwback uniforms. These uniforms should bear designs different from their primary team logo and designs.

Let’s think 5′7 165lbs. Rudy Reuttiger, too tiny to play sizable time college ball. He had few football skills and even less talent. November 8, 1975, after 2 years of playing on the practice squad, Rudy finally played two downs for Notre Dame. Utilizing his heart and desire, Rudy registered one sack and is currently the last player to be carried off the field by his team mates.

What made Rudy a Notre Dame memoir? Why is there a movie about Rudy’s college career?

Rudy old-fashioned heart and drive to glean his dwelling in Notre Dame folk lore. Developing his football skills, he fulfilled his dream of running through the tunnel onto the field of Fighting Irish.

LADY DEATH THE MOVIE is terrible! Among its good points is the fact that the story is faithful, for the most part, to Lady deaths first mini-series THE RECKONING, with some changes. The voice acting is decent, but the animation is horrible. For a movie that has been in prodution soooooo long i must say i was expecting a LOT better. Other reviewers have rated this anime movie 4 and 5 stars, GHOST IN THE SHELL, SPIRITED AWAY, VAMPIRE HUNTER D, if you compare these high quality anime movies to LADY DEATH, she just can’t compete. EP

I have to admit that I hadn’t read the comic book version of “Lady Death”. I rented this out of sheer curiosity when I saw it on the website of my online dvd rental service. The premise of the film sounded intriguing. A young girl Hope is the daughter of a mercenary named Matthias who isn’t what he appears to be. When villagers make accusations against Matthias for a fiery incident at his castle, Hope is punished for her father’s crimes by the townsfolk and is burned at the stake. When Hope is reunited with her father in the underworld, she finds out his real identity as Lucifer. She quickly rejects her father’s offer to rule the underworld and conquer the world together. Her rejection automatically sends her to Lucifer’s former comrade Cremator. Under Cremator’s tutelage, Hope slowly transforms into Lady Death both physically and emotionally. Lady Death is determined to bring down her father once and for all.

I personally liked this movie. It isn’t perfect. I have seen better animation from other anime films. The animation just seemed dated and didn’t lack the vibrant colors or the amazing visuals that films like “Ghost in the Shell” or any of Hayao Miyazaki films possesses. The dialogue was terribly cheesy and unintentionally hilarious. I bet a chimpanzee could have written better dialogue than the humans that came up with this script. Despite the unimpressive animation, thin plot, and unintentionally funny dialogue, I still found this film rather entertaining. I guess I can chalk it up as a guilty pleasure for this reviewer.

The battle between Yusuke and Sensui has begun. At first, Yusuke holds his own, but Sensui reveals a shocking twist - he has 7 different personalities! As Koenma arrives and attempts to stop him using the Mafuken, a powerful defensive spell made up of Koenma’s stored energy in his pacifier for hundreds of years, Sensui reveals his truest and most powerful form - Shinobu. Shinobu has mastered a third type of energy called Sacred Energy which not even Genkai could master. Realizing he’s outclassed, Yusuke makes the ultimate sacrifice for his friends and dies…again!

Reaching a new level of power, Hiei, Kurama, and Kuwabara attempt to avenge their fallen friend. As they attack him, Sensui lures them into Demon World for a final showdown. Meanwhile, King Yama attempts to have Yusuke’s body destroyed, but why? Yusuke is in fact a Mazoku, the descendant of a powerful demon ancestor! As the dormant demon blood awakens with him, Yusuke is revived. With a new level of power, he travels to Demon World to resume his fight with Sensui.

Their battle is intense and both appear to be fighting as equals. But somewhere inside Yusuke a change occurs and he begins to hear a voice until he is eventually transformed. A mysterious demon takes over his body and deals Sensui a killing blow. It is here that Sensui’s true nature is revealed. All this time Sensui wished to travel to Demon World to atone for his killing of so many demons. He wished for a powerful demon to kill him. Ultimately, Sensui is redeemed by Yusuke, as before his death Shinobu casts out his other 6 personalities and gains peace of mind. Thanks to Yusuke, his soul is at least partly saved. Truly a tragic character, Sensui is ultimately helped by Yusuke in a very similar way as Toguro.

Yusuke, furious that he was not in control when he defeated Sensui, reluctantly returns to the human world. The Saga ends with an epilogue explaining the fates of the remaining Psychics, Chapter Black, Sensui, and Koenma. Yusuke is soon visited by Hokushin, an S class demon and follower of Yusuke’s ancestor Raizen, one of the three kings of Demon World and the one who earlier possessed Yusuke. As Yusuke learns of the power balance in Demon World, he decides to go there and meet and train with Raizen. Elsewhere, both Hiei and Kurama also travel to Demon World to meet the other kings - Mukuro and Yomi. Which king will reign over all?

Overall 14 great episodes at a great price. The Yusuke vs. Sensui fight is one of my all time favorites. The volume ends with you wanting more as the Saga of the Three Kings is just beginning, but our show will soon end. As usual, extras are non existant and the subtitles only cover the Japanese version. Still, if you are a fan of Yu Yu Hakusho, this set is a must get.

This is one of the 3 slim yu yu hakusho dvd’s to be released that you have to own. Its the fight with Sunsui and his ultimate end and it goes into the saga of the 3 kings.

Pick this up along with five standing.

Cant wait for the final dvd after this that has the saga of the 3 kings

The movie SATAN NEVER SLEEPS and the mass market paperback from Pocket Books, Cardinal edition #C429, were both released in 1962. The movie opened in New York City on Febrary 22, 1962, in what would be Clifton Webb’s final motion picture. It was also one of only two movies that Webb made without his trademark mustache.

Pearl Buck was one of the two writers of the script, she knew China well, eventually earning a Masters degree and working as a missonary in China during the years 1914-1933. She was tutored in Chinese with English becoming her second language. Her parents had been Presbyterian missonaires before her with Pearl living in several cities in China including Nanking, Shanghai, and a small rural village named Suzhon, which must have resembled the village of SATAN NEVER SLEEPS. Buck, a Phi Beta Kappa, eventually went on to receive the Pulizer Prize in 1932 and the first American woman writer in 1938 to receive a Nobel Prize in literature.

She and her family were eyewitnesses to at least one shooting battle between Chang Kai-Sheks troops, Communist forces, and assorted warlords in 1927, a battle in which several westerners were killed. At one point, Buck and her family had to go into hiding due to the neumerous bullets that were flying around. Conditions in China continued to be dangerous up to and even after the 1945 Communist uprising.

The movie, SATAN NEVER SLEEPS, carries several issues that Pearl Buck saw and lived through during her earlier life in China. Especially the issue of tug of war between Christianity and aetheism. She also would have lived among the peasants of that time no doubt sharing many episodes that the movie portrays. Whether a viewer appreciates this movie or not it represents a story that has many elements of truth and would have been one not completely objective to Pearl Buck. Her script helps bring sobering reality to the events pictured on the movie screen.

I first saw the movie in 1962 shortly before shipping out to Japan where I was to serve on a military base between Tokyo and Yokohama. I later found out from one of Pearl’s books on Japan that she too had lived in that area of the Tokaido Road on one of her family’s return trip from China.

The movie remains one of my favorites though I cannot exactly say why, for it is a movie with much travail and human suffering. And to this day China is still a land of much travail. But be that as it may, the movie is one I have watched many times. Maybe it is the dialogue between Holden and Webb, maybe it because in the end, though many innocents have died, the ‘devil’ returns to the church and represents all the good that must yet remain in China. No doubt about it, it is a film that will leave most watchers with many thoughts and impressions.

Semper Fi.

Poor William Holden! He never got to make a romantic movie with the beautiful France Nuyen! He almost made “The World of Susie Wong” with her, but she got pulled and the equally gorgeous Nancy Kwan was substituted. Here in “Satan Never Sleeps”, France is totally in love with William Holden, but unfortunately for her (and him) he is a Catholic Priest. Williams character goes through some big struggles with temptation but never gives up his vows. Just when he seems to be at the breaking point, an event happens that changes the life of France’s character and their relationship. Not a romantically satisfying movie at all. But, I like both Holden’s and France’s performances so it was worth seeing. You will see more great footage of France Nuyen in this film than any other. She is at her beauty prime!

I can’t believe this is the first 5-star review of “Wake of the Red Witch”. Ever since I was a child it’s been one of my very favorite John Wayne films. Maybe it’s the greedy quest for the valuable pearls, or the conflict between Captain Ralls (John Wayne) & Captain Sydneye (Luther Adler), who compete fiercely for both the treasure & the lovely Angelique (Gail Russell). Or maybe it’s the doomed romance that makes this so watchable. The Duke was awesome with Gail Russell in this classic as well as the wonderful western “Angel & the Badman”. John Wayne made some of his best movies in the late 40’s, but for some reason this classic (from 1949) has been largely forgotten. Well, at least it’s on dvd. The picture quality is very good but unfortunately there are no special features, not even the trailer. If you’re a big John Wayne fan & want to see him in a rare non-western role, then this is a definite must-see!

After the classic “Angel and the Badman”, DUKE and Gail Russell paired again for this effort, “Wake of the Red Witch”.

A tale of the effects revenge, greed, and bittnerness can have on people, the story traces the duel of words and intrigue between two men; Captain Ralls (The DUKE), and shipping magnate Mayrant Sidneye.

DUKE skippers Sidneye’s prize ship, the Red Witch, and purposely wrecks her in a plan to cheat Sidneye out of a cargo of gold. Turns out that Sidneye had plotted to steal away DUKE’s girl, Angelique Desaix (played by the lovely and angelic Gail Russell).

Tricking DUKE into a fatal confrontation with the girl’s father, Sidneye is able to marry Angelique before The DUKE can set things right. This leads to her unhappiness, and The DUKE takes revenge on Sidneye by wrecking the Red Witch.

A wonderful study of greed, revenge, and redmption, we see the tale through the eyes of a young seaman (Gig Young), who Ralls sees as his younger self.

Familiar faces in the cast include Paul Fix, Henry Daniell, Jeff Corey, Erskine Sanford, and Grant Withers.

Gail is gorgeous, as usual.

This cute little tale revolves around two self described dragon hunters, Lian-Chu and Gwizdo, whom reside in a mystical world where land masses float high in the sky like tiny islands. Orphaned before they knew their parents, the two unlikely friends had somehow found each other and came to rely on each others unique abilities for survival. Lian-Chu, though quite large, was poorly educated and cannot read or write. Gwizdo, though street smart and able to read, lacks the ability to defend himself. The combination of Gwizdo’s greedy and almost endless scheming for gold and Lian-Chu’s kind heart make for an interesting team. Gwizdo’s and Lian-Chu’s past adventures apparently landed them at where this wild story begins, an inn far removed from the general populations. A large, somewhat overbearing woman and her little girl run the inn and have taken in the two perpetually broke misfits. This group of characters is where the Dragon Hunters stories really shine, as these completely mismatched batch of lonely people have come together and formed a more than slightly odd family. I must confess that I am a sucker for this type of storytelling.

I have only seen the first four episodes, but by the time I finished the fourth episode (my favorite of disc 1) I was completely in love with this tale-tale.

I think it is obvious from my description that I recommend this title. However, I would like to offer a small warning for parents regarding some of the more mature moments in this show. Because the main characters are dragon hunters, there are some frightening moments that might be too intense for very small viewers, such as the death of a horse in episode 3. Also, the inn keeper has a bit of a crush on one of the two main characters and wishes to add him to the already long list of husbands she has had. But this is played fairly innocently and I found nothing objectionable.

Overall, I would rate Dragon Hunters a gentle PG.

With a strong sense of family and it’s heart very much in the right place, I give Dragon Hunters a very high recommendation.

As I have only given a slight overview of the show,[..][..].

Hopefully, this title will get a bit more attention as more volumes are released.

“In a time of ancient gods, warlords, and kings, a land in turmoil cried out for a hero. She was Xena, a mighty princess forged in the heat of battle. The power. The passion. The danger. Her courage will change the world.”

If you don’t recognize the above, you’ve been in a distant land since at least 1995, and this review isn’t really for you. But you should buy this collection immediately, because you’re in for an entirely novel treat.

Xena: Warrior Princess is a spin-off series from “Hercules: The Legendary Journeys”, which followed 5 “Action Pack” (don’t ask) Hercules movies. The Hercules and Xena stories are revisionist tales of antiquity. Most of the names are right (”Hercules” instead of “Herakles”, and the Roman “Cupid” instead of Greek “Eros” are notable exceptions), but anachronisms abound. We first see Xena sitting on her horse, complete with stirrups (1000 years before their invention) and saddle horn (2000 years early). Xena’s sword is bronze, but steel implements abound in an era when Indian Wootz steel was a commodity valued above gold. The wet countryside of New Zealand doubles for the dry Mediterranean clime of Greece. And barbarian warriors look suspiciously like Maori. Obviously the emphasis is on entertainment rather than historical accuracy. It’s a good thing, too, because the entertainment value is outstanding.

The premise of the series is that Xena was a teenager living in the Greek village of Amphipolis when it was attacked. She rallied her neighbors to mount a successful defense. Then she took the surrounding towns to have a defensive perimeter. One thing led to another, and Xena was a warlord terrorizing the countryside. But, true to her original intent, she spared defenseless women and children. When her underlings thought that made her soft she broke from them, and began an epic quest for redemption. Soon after this she met Gabrielle, a young villager whose community is raided. With ambitions exceeding her small town’s reach Gabrielle decides to follow Xena on her travels.

Xena is a mythic hero. Lacking the godly strength of Hercules, she nevertheless matches him in battle by virtue of superhuman agility. Plus, as she says, “I have many skills” — including tactics, strategy, eastern martial arts, horsemanship, medicine, and singing. Xena is at the top of her form when we first see her. In sharp contrast to this we watch Gabrielle as she transforms from quick-witted but unsophisticated villager to wannabe bard to reluctant warrior.

Lucy Lawless got an early entry into the Hercules/Xena universe; she played Lysia in “Hercules and the Amazon Women”, the very first of the movies that preceded the “Hercules” series. In fact this earlier role was a strike against her when trying out for the part of Xena in the “Hercules” series. But hair dye, boots with lifts, and skin bronzer transformed Lucy Lawless (5′ 10 1/2″, light brown hair, pale skin) to Xena (6′ tall, brown-black hair, olive complexion). Add in a passable American accent, and this native New Zealander carried off the role of an Americanized Greek mythic hero with aplomb. When you see Xena riding at the gallop or trading blows with a foe that’s really Lucy Lawless; when Xena is tumbling through the air it’s a stunt performer.

Renee O’Connor also got an early start; she played an earlier version of Deianeira, Hercules’ wife, in “Hercules and the Lost Kingdom”, the second Hercules movie, before landing the role of Gabrielle. In the first season of X:WP O’Connor is listed as “also starring”, after the title; only Lawless gets “starring” billing.

Various continuing characters from “Hercules” appear in Season One of X:WP:
- Kevin Smith as Ares, God of War
- Kevin Sorbo as Hercules
- Michael Hurst as Iolaus (Hercules’ sidekick); also as Charon
- Robert Trebor as Salmoneus, mercurial merchant
- Bruce Campbell as Autolycus, King of Thieves
- Erik Thomson as Hades, God of the Underworld

Season One of Xena introduced a number of new faces that would become familiar:
- Danielle Cormack as Ephiny, Amazon warrior
- Paul Norell as Falafel, food stand vendor
- Karl Urban, who would appear again in seasons 2+ as Julius Caesar
- Hudson Leick as Callisto, nemesis extraordinaire
- Ted Raimi as Joxer, bumbling would-be warrior

More notable one-shot guest stars from Season One included:
- Kate Hodge as Celesta, Goddess of Death
- Galyn G”rg as Helen of Troy
- Tim Thomerson as Meleager the Mighty
- Peter McCauley as Talmodeus

Season One of X:WP was shot on 16mm film to keep production costs down, so the DVD video transfer is no better than you’d expect. The audio is quite a bit better, including outstanding music by Joseph LoDuca. The Xena theme, in particular, is a wonderful mix of bouzouki, french horns, and strings to mix traditional Greek sounds with the stirring European classical melodies we’ve come to associate with inspirational themes.

The 7-disc Season One collection is remarkable mostly for what it DOESN’T have. There are NO extras in the Season One DVDs AT ALL. Each of the 24 episodes is 44 minutes 15 seconds or less. There are no DVD or CC captions. There are no extra chapter stops; each episode has 5 or 6 chapters. The 7th disc is a CD-ROM, with rather unremarkable content. There are no printed guides in the set.

6 DVDs, with 4 episodes each; 24 total episodes
1 CD-ROM:
- Screensaver
- Cast & Director bios
- “Scrolls” - episode cast lists, guest stars (”mortals” and “gods”), search through the scrolls text
- Season One trivia game

Xena: Warrior Princess is a fun, butt-kicking action series. It’s a shame that the DVD collection of Season One is both low on extra content and high on price.

The 1st Season of Xena was addictive, mindblowing and, like all beginnings, had some kinks to be worked out. The casting of Lucy Lawless and Renee O’Connor was phenomenal from day one; Lawless (as most of you probably know) plays a profound, regretful, blue eyed, powerful former warlord who, thanks to help from Hercules, sets out to thoughtfully atone for her past reign of terror.

“Nothing you can do can erase the shame you’ve brought onto your kinsmen,” Xena’s mother exclaims. “Probably not,” Xena admits sadly, eyes dropping, “but I’m going to spend the right of my life trying.” And does she ever! In one of her first attempts at being “good”, the warrior princess lays eyes on Gabrielle, a spirited and selfless village girl who, after seeing Xena’s heroics, wants to “join up with Xena” and “wants to be a warrior like her” As all fans know, Gabrielle is instrumental in reforming Xena by sharing her unconditional love & showing her how much good there is to be done. Xena, of course, has a renewed purpose & reason to live while gladly ready to die for Gab. Like most 1st seasons, the characters are a little shaky, the acting is new & unsual, & the plots are somewhat undefined & experimental & therefore not as soul pinching, action packed and heartpounding as the seasons that so bravely followed. Also, while X & G’s relationship grew dramatically over the years, it was only “friendly” at this stage of the game. At least they wised up in the 2nd season.

Still, it holds a special place in the hearts of all Xena fans as the noble beginning of a timeless legend of pursuing the things that matter: love, sacrifice, the greater good, nobility, triumpth, loss, life.

There are 24 great episodes but HIGHLIGHTS include:
“Sins Of The Past” -pilot episode
Xena journeys homeward determined to atone for the sins of her past, but her efforts to begin a new life are challenged by the vengeful warlord Draco. A betrothed village girl, Gabrielle, takes to the warrior princess immediately.

“Dreamworker”
Xena must enter the magical realm of the Dreamscape to rescue Gabrielle after she is kidnapped by an unlikely god.

“Altared States”
Xena & Gab intervene to save young boy from being sacrificed to a “one God” by his own father

“The Greater Good”
When Xena is hit with a poisoned dart, Gab must disguise herself as the warrior princess in a plan to save Salmoneous and a town from an evil warlord

“Callisto”
Xena must battle the fierce woman warrior Callisto, who is bent on revenge for the burning death of her family by evil Xena years ago. One of my top ten faves of all times…

“Is There A Doctor In The House?”
Xena attempts to end the Mitoan-Thessalian War while trying to use her medical knowledge to save the lives of numerous casualties, including the critically wounded Gabrielle

I have had 5 viper products over time and this is the best one I have owned. I installed it by myself in my 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee and it works great. This model remote has a better screen than my other car which has the 5900. The rechargeable battery is a must compared to putting a new AAA battery in every few weeks! What a waste. The range is good and combined with a CAN BUS module, install is much easier these days and integrates with the factory computer/alarm system. In fact, I can use the original unlock/lock remote and it arms/disarms the VIPER! I don’t use it because I need the remote start feature but it is nice to have an additional backup. Also, the 5901 (unlike the 5900) comes with a second remote. It is the 1 way remote, but is still great to have a second remote to go with the second key. DE also put the arm light inside the antenna. At first, I didn’t like this but I found a nice spot behind the rear view mirror and tucked in the roof that allows the light to shine yet be somewhat discrete. Also, the program button is on the antenna. Just make sure you can access it and don’t tuck the antenna to far way! Because of these changes, you have to have the antenna plugged in for the 5901 to even turn on. I had it all hooked up and thought I’d be able to test. No worky. Turns out the antenna has to be plugged in! Good to know. The shock sensor is now built into the main box too. Not sure what I think about that yet. Last thing is the remote is awesome. I already mentioned the battery, but the remote is now a mini computer. There are so many programming options such as, more feedback about the status of the car, current time, cabin temperature (which is currently stuck at 95 deg all the time!), several color options to choose, vibrate and several audible options (5900 had some of this), and a bigger screen. All in all.. love it. This is the best out there.

I had the previous generation units on both my vehicles and when I replaced one of them I purchased this unit for it.

I’m using it on a 5spd in manual mode and it works great!

It has better battery life, smaller weight and size, and the keypress respond quicker than the last generation so I’m happy all around!

I have brought this item from US and was installed in Kuwait, I was shocked that I didn’t find somebody that can install it, but, luckily, I found one, even he was expensive :), but, he have done good job.

it has a very good range, but, not much in concrete walls, I can run it from my flat in the 4th floor!!!! WOWWW.

so, nice range, very cool options plus, very stylish remote.

The price is relatively high, but, it’s still new, but, again it worth it.
