About time someone made a proper size screen that makes sense for use in cars. I have a really small vehicle, Toyota Prius, and this 7200 Streetfinder gps is perfect size for the car. There are many useful functions on the touch screen or you can use the remote control. The screen is big, beautiful and bright, if you want bright, if not you can adjust it. I mainly like to just keep the unit on “map” function so I can see what streets are coming up, especially at night when I an not in my neighborhood. The name of the next street is there is big bold letters, but if you press the “speak” button on the remote, it will announce the upcoming street. This thing is great and I highly recommend it. The cigarette power supply and bracket (one piece) makes it a snap to remove the unit for safe keeping. One easy motion and its off the bracket. Garmin really put a lot of thought into this one. There are so many ways this thing works but I don’t want to write a book here. The only thing I can recommend is that if you are not going to mount it directly on top of your dashboard, purchase the Garmin “Ga 25MCX Low Profile Gps” antenna that snaps into the back of the unit. It will give you great reception results, instead of “searching for satellite” you will get “ready for navigation” in just a few moments. The wire that it comes attached to it is not too big and allows for easy squeezing into small places for easy concealment. I didn’t have to mount it outside my car for great reception, as a matter of fact, just plugging it into the back of the unit made a great difference. For true mobile use I am sure Garmin will be coming out with a suction mount also in the near future. JUST ORDER IT, YOU WON’T BE DISAPPOINTED!!!! That is my opinion.

Just purchased, only used on a few trips, but want to give you my first impressions, which are very positive.

First, the ads say that this is designed for larger vehicles. Not agreed. The impression from the on-line descriptions is that the screen size is HUGE, for example, the same as your office PC. Not true, it is a 7 inch diameter screen, so it is still relatively small, the same size as most current built in expensive auto GPS screens. Compared to the 2730 model, the 7200 has perfect size touch screen inputs while on the go. For the extra money, recommend the 7200 with the larger screen over 2730 which has the same features. So, the touch screen size of the model 7200 is great for viewing and input of addresses on any size vehicle.

I was very impressed with connectivty during heavy weather and recommend the external antenna option (sticks to the inside windshield by suction cups).

The voice commands are excellent with advance warnings of upcoming turns and then the next anticipated turn.

Screen is bright and automatically adjusts to light.

No need to change anything in the initial settings, they are great. Just plug in and go. User friendly screens.

Easy to upgrade to the latest software as shown on the garmin web site from your PC to the unit. No need to insert update chips.

The on/off switch. Should press and hold down. Just a light press does not do anything.

I was disappointed that the software bundle included in the package did not include the NT navagation database software, and had to purchase it separately. The PC software allows you to pre-plan your route on your PC and download this to your 7200 so you do not have to load addresses on the go. I tested this and it works great.

If you are in a traffic jam, press “Detour” and you will taken around the jam to your destination. Be prepared however to go through back roads and areas that you may not know.

I did not test the special features of sat. nav. traffic, audio, nor books yet.

Update: I have used this now on a dozen trips and the navigation is very trustworthy. My wife is a Realtor and she loves it.

I researched it for months and knew exactly what I wanted in a GPS, before I purchased the Garmin StreetPilot 7200. It has all of the features I was looking for, a large screen, real time traffic, remote, etc. I’m not going to dwell on all the great features. Every review will tell you about these, and they are great, if entering an address to go to or finding a restaurant or gas station is all you’re going to use it for.

What you won’t see in the reviews, and what the manufacturers ads don’t tell you is that this unit does not show street names on the map. If you program in an address and want it to guide you to a specific place, it shows the next street you are going to cross, and will tell you every turn to make and when to make it. And it does that very well, most of the time. I have had it take me on a circuitous route that never ends if you keep following the directions, but that is rare. A much more common problem is that on some freeways it does not know when I take the entrance ramp, and still thinks I’m on the service road. At a certain point before each new entrance it starts telling me to take the next entrance ramp, in spite of the fact that I’m already on the freeway. And as I pass the entrance and it thinks I have missed the ramp again, it says “recalculating route” in what seems to me a reproving tone of voice. Very annoying. Also, unless you’re on a major Interstate Highway, it does not tell you the name of your exit. If I’m on Northwest Freeway a mile from my exit at 34th Street, it says “Take exit to Northwest Freeway in one mile”, etc.

Looking back on it, it was the one feature that I didn’t research. But then I guess I just assumed that it would have the street names on the map. After all, I wouldn’t ask if a Rand McNally Road Atlas had street names. Every GPS I have ever seen shows the street names.

I have to admit, this unit works as well as a yellow pages if you’re sitting in a strange place and need to find a gas station or restaurant. It lists every conceivable place you might want to go, along with address, phone number, and directions.

But if you are simply parked in a strange part of town and want to know what street you are on, forget it. It shows you the street layout, but you have no way of knowing the street names. What if I just want to use it as a regular map? If I’m simply driving down the street and want to know what street I’m on I have to look for a street sign or pull out the old Key Map Guide that I thought I’d never have to use again. If you need directions to get somewhere specific and know the address, this unit is great. But what if you’re lost and need a map? Forget it. There’s just no way to use this “map” as a map. You can zoom in on an area and see the way the streets run, but not the street names.

I’ve contacted Garmin twice… surely there must be a way to see the street names… to turn this feature on? I was told that the system was not designed to show street names, there is nothing I can do to make it show street names, and the reason for that is that it would be too cluttered, and might distract me while driving.

Maybe that’s true, but I think I should have the option to see the names of the streets just like a regular map, and be able to make my own decision whether to turn it off if I feel distracted, instead of Garmin making that decision for me. The reason I BOUGHT the big screen was so that I could see the street names better. Every other unit I’ve seen, even other Garmins, show street names, and most have smaller screens than the 7200.

A friend just bought a 2008 GMC Sierra 2500 with a factory installed in-dash Kenwood GPS, with a swing out screen about the same size as the 7200. When I first saw it, I was amazed to see the same basic layout and graphics as my Garmin, and that it in fact uses Garmin software. I was helping him set it up, and I have to admit that deep down I was kind of glad that he too would no longer have the street names on his GPS, like his old one did. Maybe the old adage “misery loves company” has some truth to it. Just as I was having to bite my tongue to keep the glee out of my voice as I commiserated with him over the fact that now he, too, was going to have to do without street names… well, I could hardly believe my eyes. On this screen that looked just like mine, using the Garmin software I have gotten so familiar with and with Garmin actually written on the screen, just as it was on mine… all the street names within a two-mile radius popped up! I’m actually very happy for him. It’s just that he never researches anything. He just goes out and buys the most expensive one of whatever it is, and everything always seems to work out great. And I research it and compare models for months and buy a top of the line GPS and… OK… I’m not really happy for him at all. I wish I had his unit and he had mine.

And before you ask, no, this software will not work on my 7200. I tried to purchase it on the Garmin website the same day I saw his Kenwood and they acted like I was crazy for even thinking it might work.

Well, I’ve had my 7200 for almost a year now, and it stays stored in my center console most of the time, unless I have a specific address to go to, or need to know where the closest What-A-Burger is (like I don’t already know the exact location of every What-A-Burger in the Greater Houston Area!)

I’m very envious when I’m in a friends car, and even though I may have to put on my glasses because their screen is one third the size of mine, I can see every street name. I thought I had done all the research, but I was wrong and would have looked further if I had known this unit lacked the basic ability to display the names of the streets on the map. I just wish I had it all to do over again. Even if I had to spend more to get what I want, it would be worth it. And needless to say, I would NOT buy a Garmin… even one that shows the streets.

Superbowl Advertising

The thing that I have never understood is the lack of online “help” these advertisers conception for online. They exhaust $2.5 million on a commercial set, but have almost zero visibility when it comes to relaying that message online. Let me give you an example:

1. John Fan is sitting on his couch. It’s the 4th quarter, 1 slight 30 seconds left, derive is tied 21/21. The Pats call a time out.

2. Commercial time! Toyota has a commercial for the unique oxygen-fueled SUV. It shows 4 girls in bikinis, driving down soar highway with a dinky heed line at the demolish of stating “you deem it looks genuine. That’s nothing, it is fueled by oxygen.” and ends with a spot promo: “arrive to [http://www.toyota-oxygen-fueled-SUV.com]” too learn more.

3. John Fan thinks “holy $h^t” I have to learn more about this, but I better wait until the game is over.

4. The game comes support on, the patriots miss a 22 yard field goal and the Giants score in overtime on a kick off return.

5. John Fan is devastated. After awaking from drunken nap, he goes to his computer to read more about that cold oxygen-fueled SUV.

6. He forgets the website URL. No scrape, he thinks, Google will rep it.

7. Types in ‘New Toyota’

8. Results for Camry’s pop up everywhere.

9. He types in ‘Oxygen Fueled SUV’.

10. Green-themed websites pop up everywhere.

11. He gets bored, turns off his monitor, and takes a nap.

12. Toyota fair lost John Fan.

The pathetic section is that if Toyota would have spent a lousy $10-$20k to backup their $2.5 million dollar shapely Bowl ad, it would have made it so grand more effective.

Youth Football, Practice Number 8 of the 2008 Season

February 4th, 2010 by kolby3736

Line: Wedge fit and wedge blocking on the coach with a shield for about 15 minutes and the crab blocking progression for about 10 minutes.

Backs: The chaser drill accurate from the blog. Our backs were not hitting the holes snappy enough, the chaser drill usually solves that one in one practice session. We did the chaser with either a player at 1 succor or as the flit and either running a power off-tackle or the reverse, with a chaser in hot pursuit at the snap. The endpoint was about 10 yards from the line of scrimmage. Our centers were snapping with the backs in a rotation, so they could secure some work with the linemen as well. Then originate field blocking drill, using the diamond drill.

Team Offense: Handed out wrist coaches to everyone and explained our simple no-huddle wrist coach system. Even the age 7-9 rookies “got it” . We tested as a group and individually to compose obvious everyone understands it.

Team Offense; Reviewed Mouse Series with oldest kids demoing the series.

All teams repping plays on air with coaches at the point of attack with shields.

Age 7-9: Team reps, Sainted Six and Mouse Series

Age 10-11: Team reps, Sainted Six and Mouse Series

Age 12-13: Team reps, Sainted Six, Mouse, burly wobble and the basic 3 adjustments

Age 10-11 and age 12-13: 25 minutes of punts and punt returns.

Age 7-9: 15 Minutes of Deer Hunter game.

Browns Running assist, Reuben Droughns, No Longer Running From The Law

February 4th, 2010 by kolby3736

Droughns latest escapade was stretched out, as he was no longer at the position, by the time the Sheriffs arrived. Droughns did however, surrender to the authorities on Wednesday evening, and spent an evening in jail awaiting a court hearing on the following Thursday morning. There has been no press release on the honest nature of the charge nor has there been a statement about the possible outcome.

It is known that he was charged with a third degree assault and harassment, which is only a misdemeanor offence. The surrender can after there was an begin communication between the Sheriff’s Department, and Droughns agent. The whole affair was dealt with in a professional and quiet fashion.

Droughns was traded in the year 2005 from the Denver Broncos, to the Browns. He recently signed a three-year extension on his contract. Last season he had two touchdowns, and rushed for 1,232 yards on 309 carries. There have been no statements made by the Browns in regards to the case, and it is not believed this will impede his season with the Browns.

Bits of this movie were permanently etched into mind since childhood, waiting to be triggered. I vividly recall the opening sequence, the children’s first meditation and the giant headless mannequins. I can’t even remember where or when I first saw it but I recognized the images instantly.

This film resonates with me on a subconscious level. It’s entirely my style. It is the very definition of what I consider to be good entertainment, and may have even predetermined my interest in sci-fi.

Remember those old UNICEF animated shorts? This style of animation always caused an emotional response with me and I didn’t know why until I saw this film again so many years later.

I don’t recall the frontal nudity the first time I saw it, so I guess it was no big deal.

This movie is like being “the one” no one can tell if you will like it, you either like it or you don’t.

Its difficult to free a mind after a certain age.

Once there was a sophisticated race of humans who despite their intelligence…destroyed their homeworld of Terra.

Landing on an alien world of Ygam these humanoids called Oms find themselves in a harsh cruel enviroment. They become the lower order suppressed by the planet’s inhabbitants…the Traags.
The Traags are blueskinned giants who rule over all creatures. Where the Oms become savage and wild…the Traags are cerebral and aloof and preoccupied with meditation.
The Traags domesticate some of the Oms for pets while exterminate wild “nests” of Oms in order to control their population…

This brings you now to the begining of this tale of one domesticated Om named Ter who steels knowledge from the Traags and delivers it to the savage Oms. Although Ter is an Om…he is at first isolated in a race he has never known. But, it is he who helps to bring about change in this strange world. And the mystery of Ygam’s only moom Fantastic Planet holds the key to the Traag’s ruin.

WHY SHOULD YOU WATCH IT?
Along with a superb soundtrack of jazz fusion rock mixed with sound fx, this annimated classic is art frame by frame. It is an allegory of the Russian invasion of Czecholslovakia directed beautifully by Rene Laloux.

WHY SHOULD YOU OWN IT?

This is a wonderful kids show! My 3 1/2 year old son adores it - he sings along and pretends to build words just like the characters. It is visually appealing with lovable, non-annoying characters. My son loves the stories and being able to pick out many of the letter. Great, educational, program!!

This is, in my opinion, the BEST kids’ show to come around in a very, very long time. It helps kids recognize their letters, sound out words, and spell, which I appreciate. However, learning aside- this show is fantastic. It is HILARIOUS, the characters are well-developed and lovable, and the quality is fantastic.

I know this show is meant for preschoolers, but my 7 year old loves it too. She is a beginning reader, and she feels very cool being able to recognize all the words in WordWorld. I am preordering both DVDs, and in the meantime we’ll continue to catch it on PBS.

John Huston’s film of MOBY DICK is perhaps a rare exception. It’s a great film in its own right, apart from the great novel upon which it is based. The case can easily be made that this film does not ‘do justice’ to the book, if only for the reason that it does not cover every aspect of Melville’s original. But this film proves that a slavish literary imitation is not necessary for a great film.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Moby Dick! Click Here

Huston also fought with Ray Bradbury over the screenplay. The great science fiction author was literally reduced to tears by the gruff director, and he wrote a book about the experience. There was also some conflict over the casting of Gregory Peck as Ahab. Some say Orson Welles or Leo Genn (Starbuck) would have been a better choice. This may well be, but it should be admitted that Peck rises to the occasion when it’s called for. The great scene with the Spanish doubloon and the great scene with Starbuck on the bridge, where Ahab explains his obsession. Few other actors are likely to have surpassed these moments.

According to IMDb, MOBY DICK was shot in 1.66:1 aspect ratio. This DVD does not present the film in that ratio, yet it does not appear to be a pan & scan transfer. The film looks very good and and nothing appears to have been done to tamper with the color. This is most likely how it should look. The director fought with the studio over the color process used in MOBY DICK: it’s intentional. He and the cinematographer were trying to capture a visual style that would be evocative of a period style of painting that would contribute to the mood of the story.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Moby Dick! Click Here

Anyone interested in background on this film should read THE HUSTONS by Lawrence Grobel. The harrowing production is detailed, with plenty of attention given to the above-mentioned conflicts and also to the shooting of the INCREDIBLE final sequence.

Some extras would have been welcome, but this DVD is more than worth owning by any fan of Melville, Huston or American film.

One of John Huston’s very best films has also been by far his most overlooked and underrated. Preceded by a hilariously bad version with John Barrymore (in which Ahab has a love interest and succeeds in killing Moby Dick, who resembles a floating mattress) and later redone as a TV-movie with Patrick Stewart, Huston’s version remains by far the best film of what may be the greatest American story ever told. The fact that it is still well-remembered proves its lasting power; many other films-from-novels sink right out of sight. Ray Bradbury’s script captures the essence of Melville’s novel, using his words (and some words so good you’d swear they were his) and keeping true to the vision and the atmosphere, but is never confined to being anything like a mere “adaption”. The best films-from-books transcend their sources and stand as independently great works. Melville’s novel is great because it’s unfilmable - messy, rambling, convulted, something you need to spend a while digging into; something rich and endlessly rewarding. Any smart adapter of such material won’t waste any time trying to copy those elements onto the screen; he’ll go right for the essence of the story, what drives it: Ishmael’s curious search for the unknown and Ahab’s all-consuming quest to confront the unknown - to prove that God cannot treat him like the Jonah of Orson Welles’ unforgettable sermon, to “strike through the mask” of the God that torments man. It’s a “wicked book,” as Melville said, and the blasphemous edge survives to the screen; Huston and Bradbury never dull the point but if anything sharpen it. Best of all, they remove Fedallah, a character who really is, as Bradbury said, “a bore”; just something to suggest that Ahab is cursed like Macbeth - even the ironic prophecies are practically a knock-off of the three witches’. Bradbury instead uses a more subtle, mysterious prophecy spoken through Elijah, a more subtly frightening and eerie character than Fedallah who is just used as a throwaway in Melville, but here takes on a great importance. The prophecy is fulfilled stunningly in a final scene that, for me, stands as one of the greatest in film history. It begins with the strange melancholy and calm of the “Symphony” scene, and then progresses quickly to the final chase. Ahab’s destruction seems even more powerfully done here than in the original; isn’t it so profoundly right that he and the whale should be lashed together forever and ever? The sight of him drowned and chillingly ‘beckoning’ to his crew to follow him is the most haunting moment in the film. There are very few misfires in this film; I would call it one of the best examples of how fine a movie can be made of an ‘untouchable’ classic. By contrast, the recent TV-remake was a ghastly misfire. The script was haphazardly faithful to Melville, with some bizarre changes (the Pequod stuck in Antarctic ice?), a total lack of the atmosphere Huston drenches his film in, and rather anemic performances, with the exception of Patrick Stewart’s fiery version of Ahab. Stewart treated Ahab as a mighty Shakespearean tragic figure, the way he always should have been done. Still, Gregory Peck’s interpretation shows that he was far from miscast, just cast unusually. He holds Ahab’s madness down under a brooding darkness and does indeed keep a “deranged dignity,” never lets the story turn merely absurd. The film ends holding on the floating coffin that saved Ishmael - a typical Huston gesture. But this film is not typical, far from it. If you are new to Melville, see it; if you are a Melville purist, open your mind to something that is very far from a watered-down rewrite of a great but dramatically flawed book, something mighty and inspiring in its own right.

The Mad Max films finish their transformation from the edgy, ultra-violent first movie to this kid-friendly adventure picture with slick production values and flawless photography. The violence is toned down and the fantasy elements are played up; unfortunately, this means the post-apocalytpic kick of the second movie (just about one of the greatest action flick — EVER!) has vanished. “Thunderdome” has some fine moments, especially the well-directed scenes with the tribes of children and the haunting images of the coda, as well a couple of good action sequences, such as the face-off in the Thunderdome arena, but it doesn’t stay in your memory the way the first two films do. It is still worth seeing if you enjoyed the other movies in the series. Tina Turner’s performance is certainly interesting, similar to Grace Jones turn in “Conan the Destroyer,” which was made at about the same time.

Of course, if you’ve never seen a Mad Max films, don’t start here. Go back to the first one (available in a great deluxe DVD), then work up to the best of three “Road Warrior” (available in a not so deluxe DVD), then you’ll be ready for this finale — and this DVD doesn’t have much in the way of extras on it either.

I’m probably one out of only a handful of people that thinks Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome is just as good as The Road Warrior, and for different reasons, too. The Road Warrior was a spectacle of frenetically paced action sequences and it would feel like a complete retread if Beyond Thunderdome tried to do the same thing again. Instead, they added new elements, and the result is a very entertaining and imaginitive action/adventure.

Max (Mel Gibson) has just been robbed of all his belongings in the middle of nowhere in Australia. He searches for the thief and this leads to Bartertown, a unique society built upon methane energy dependent on pig manure, no less.

Max’s search leads him to Aunty Entity (Tina Turner), Bartertown’s lawmaker, who strikes a deal with him. All Max has to do is kill a certain somebody in Thunderdome arena and he’ll get provisions in return. Not everything goes according to plan and Max is banished to the desert where he is rescued by a small group of lost children.

For those expecting the action of The Road Warrior you might be disappointed. While there is a good bit of action in Beyond Thunderdome, it’s not as much as its predecessor and doesn’t have as much energy. However, Beyond Thunderdome should be noted for having what is perhaps one of the best action sequences in American film history with the gladiator fight in Thunderdome arena between Max and the gigantic Blaster. The sequence is undeniably inventive and clever; it involves the two men tied to bungee cords that allow them to spring and leap throughout the arena and grab any weapons placed all around such as a mace, chainsaw, spear, etc.

What makes the film so good, though, are its successful attempts at creating complex societies. Bartertown is a sight to behold and is made all the more interesting by the rituals the “citizens” perform and the laws they obey.

As for the performances, Mel Gibson excels and gives a fine performance as usual. Tina Turner is a real surprise as the villainess; she certainly knows how to act and delivers a fairly good performance. Most of the supporting cast do a decent job with the material they’re given. Angry Anderson, in particular, is quite humorous as the henchmen who rarely talks and mostly grunts, screams, and yells in exaggerated tones.

After Brian May’s exciting score in The Road Warrior, Maurice Jarre takes over the job and composes a score that is quite poetic and, at times, lush and beautiful.

As with all the final scenes in the Mad Max films, this one ends perfectly. This time, we get the feeling that humanity has hope so long as men like Max are around.

To start, Solty Rei is just a phenomenal anime. Absolute first rate voice acting from the English cast, most notably Christopher Sabat (aka Prince Vegeta), and animation studio Gonzo does a heckuva job on the CG/traditional animation combo.

*Minor Spoilers may follow*

The show opens basically enough. Roy Revant is a bounty hunter, chasing down the baddies with his hard-nosed attitude. He’s lost his wife to cancer, and his daughter to a mysterious disaster called the Blast Fall. One night, one of his hunts goes awry, and this mysterious girl falls from the sky and saves his life. She grows attached to him, and he pushes her away, with amusing results. Oh, and she’s a cyborg.

Sounds simple. Your basic anime plot, right?

WRONG. Dead wrong. While Solty Rei may start out on a rather formulaic note, by the time you reach the halfway point, the entire series does a “180″ in tone, and doesn’t let up for a second. Since so much of my enjoyment was derived from the major plot twists at the midway point of the show, I won’t spoil it for anyone, but suffice it to say, it’s big.

By the time you make it to the end of the series, everything you thought you knew gets stood on its head, and you’ll become attached to all the characters, desperate for more action. The ending is wholly satisfying, and answers all the questions that are raised during the course of the series.

Don’t pass this one up, or be dissuaded by negative reviews for the first couple of volumes on other sites. You will not be sorry you spent money on this one.

Solty Rei is a very good, highly underrated series in my opinion. It starts off a bit slow and has a few cliche moments, but then most shows do. If you’re a fan of bounty hunters, adorable cyborg girls, crazy mech vehicle fights, and some nice plot twists, you’d probably enjoy this series. It’s got something for everyone, theres some kind of fight or action in pretty much every episode, with plenty of drama and character development and a liberal sprinkling of comedy and fanservice scattered throughout.

So if you haven’t seen this yet now’s a good time with the new boxset!

Yes, this film is about as formulaic as they come: a tough, no-nonsense, battle-tested sergeant turning a bunch of misfits into an effective fighting unit. On top of that, we are treated (again) to a romantic aspect of a story featuring a bitter, petulant ex-wife who still harbors emotional attachment to that no-good ex of hers.

Yet HEARTBREAK RIDGE delivers an entertaining story–along with some very amusing moments–thanks mainly to Clint Eastwood as the gravel-voiced Gunnery Sergeant Tom “Gunny” Highway. Sure, Eastwood brings brawn and plenty of knuckle sandwiches to this role, but also a fragile vulnerability that makes the character more three-dimensional. Eastwood carries this film, but that’s no problem: those shoulders are plenty broad.

Marsha Mason as ex-wife Aggie gripes and complains at a healthy clip, while Mario Van Peebles as soldier “Stitch” Jones stands out from the rest of Gunny’s dysfunctional Recon Platoon. HEARTBREAK RIDGE has action, drama, and plenty of laughs. Sounds like a winning Eastwood formula to me.

Clint Eastwood directed and starred in the lead role of this film about a “salty,” battle-hardened career sergeant who whips a platoon of new Marines into shape. Along the way, he attempts to repair his failed marriage and locks horns with the Marine Battalion’s Operations Officer.

Eastwood is Gunnery Sergeant Highway, a Korea and Vietnam veteran who won the Medal of Honor and survived a horrific battle in Korea referred to as “Heartbreak Ridge” in the film. He’s a warrior on the battlefield, but his aggressive, hard-drinking and “tell-it-like-it-is” personality has cost him promotion and his marriage. Nearing retirement, he receives orders to return to his elite specialty of Force Reconnaissance. Upon arrival, the battalion’s operations officer treats Gunny as a washed-up old prima donna and he finds his new platoon comprised of misfits. On the personal side, Gunny’s ex-wife still resides locally earning a living as a cocktail waitress.

Tackling his main problem, he commences to breathing fire into his young Marines, turning them into “heart-breakers and life-takers.” During his off-time, he tangles with his ex-wife in an attempt to repair their failed marriage. All during this time, he’s one step away from being under-mined and kicked out by his nemesis.

The film culminates with their deployment to intervene the crisis on the Island of Grenada (actual operation in 1983), leading the way into combat for the Marine battalion. It is here where the plot unfolds to reveal if Gunny’s old-school training methods have worked, if his wife decides to return, and if he’ll survive.

Overall, the movie has Eastwood’s brand of humor and it’s a likeable feature not to be taken too seriously. There are some technical flaws, such as an absence of other officers in the battalion, but this doesn’t spoil the movie too much unless you’re a proud member of the Marine Corps. Another item about this movie is the use of profanity; it’s colorful and there’s plenty of it. By rumor, this story was originally written for an Army Ranger battalion, but apparently the Army denied permission to portray their Rangers in this fashion. Whatever the case, it’s enjoyable to watch and does touch upon some actual leadership values.
