When I first rented BRIGADOON from the public library last spring, I immediately fell in love with it. Just added the DVD to my collection yesterday. It is one of the most beautiful films I have ever seen. It is a 1954 film adaptation of the 1947 Broadway musical. The Lerner and Loewe score is one of the greatest ever written for the stage (or screen). The great cast includes Gene Kelly, Van Johnson, and Cyd Charisse. Although certainly not the greatest singers in the world, Kelly’s and Johnson’s singing is more than adequate and is really quite lovely. Charisse’s singing voice is dubbed for this film, and she works great as well.

When Brigadoon made the transition from Broadway to Hollywood, a good chunk of its score was dispensed with in order to make room to highlight the dancing abilities of its stars. This is, in fact, where many people find fault with this film; the lack of the rest of the Broadway score. To these people, I have this to say… —This movie is not the Broadway play. It is a **film adaptation.**— This is also the common complaint about MGM’s “Show Boat” from 3 years earlier. Another common complaint about “Brigadoon” is that it was obviously shot in soundstages on the MGM lot in Culver City instead of the highlands of Scotland. This was due to the fact that producers were working with smaller budgets than they had been just 3 or 4 years earlier. This, coupled with the unpredictable weather in the British Isles, necesitated that the film be shot at the studio. This is also evident in “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers” from the same year. Although the sets are obviously painted backdrops, they are nicely done and work well. IMO, they do not demerit the film.

Brigadoon more than makes up for the missing songs by adding some spectacular dance numbers. “Heather on the Hill” is one of the most sweeping dance numbers I have ever seen in any film. Kelly’s and Charisse’s gracefulness really hits the spot.

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND the DVD, with its lush color, clear picture, and stereo sound. If you haven’t seen “Brigadoon,” you should see it. At the very least for some of the greatest dance numbers you will ever see.

Brigadoon is widely considered as one of Vincente Minnelli’s lesser achievements. The critics were somewhat disenchanted that Brigadoon was filmed on a sound stage in Culver City rather than “on location” in Scotland. MGM had not helped matters by actually dispatching Minnelli and Producer Arthur Freed to Scotland to scout for suitable filming locations. MGM, like the other major studios, were finding themselves in somewhat dire financial straits due to competition from television and certain pieces of anti-trust legislation that loosened their monopolistic grip over the entertainment industry. When MGM pulled the plug on the concept of an “on location” shoot (they were well aware of Minnelli’s obsession with perfection and expected that he would go well over budget if given a free rein), the entire project became saddled with an image problem. By 1954, movie audiences expected something more than fixed indoor sets and painted scenery, especially from a work so site specific as Brigadoon.
Minnelli faced other obstacles. Ansco was a cheaper and somewhat inferior colour processing system than Technicolor, which no doubt irritated his refined sensibilities. He also had to come to terms with the new demands of Cinemascope and full stereophonic sound, with somewhat mixed results.
Even more troubling is that the choreography was in the hands of Gene Kelly, who seemed determined to emphasize the dancing rather than musical element at the heart of Brigadoon. The two had worked wonderfully together on “An American in Paris”, but on the set of Brigadoon their artistic visions clashed. It is telling that Brigadoon was their last collaboration.
Critics in the 1950’s were also a better informed breed than they were 20 years earlier and they were quick to pounce on certain “inaccuracies”, such as the outrageous blends of tartans, which cerainly would have made any Laird wince, and the suitability of much of Mr. Kelly’s choreography; hardly Scottish by a long stretch.
Yet in spite of these encumberances, I love this film. The painted diaramas are in keeping with the preposterous nature of the storyline, and what beautiful sets they are! Minnelli’s artistic flourishes are evident eveywhere, such as the ample plantings of heather which must have caused a state of full employment for local florists. Minnelli”s outstanding contribution to American Film was his refined palette of colour schemes, and in Brigadoon his genius achieves its climax. Make no mistake, Brigadoon is a feast for the eyes.
The music by Lerner and Loewe is superb, with haunting melodies and stirring choruses. Cyd Charisse, always more celebrated for her dancing than her thespian skills, in Brigadoon achieves her finest hour, even though her singing voice is dubbed. Gene Kelly’s type of acting is perhaps an acquired taste, but there is no denying his cat like grace and radiant boyish good looks.
On the whole, the imperfections of Brigadoon only make it more endearing. It is the one musical I never tire of seeing over and over again.

Coaching Youth Football (piece 1) -Keys to Success

February 4th, 2010 by arely4705

Be Passionate
You have to coach for the factual reasons. You should concentrate on the lessons that will exhibit your players splendid morals. notable standards to impart are respect for authority, work ethic, competitiveness, and teamwork. A proper youth football coach will also stress setting reachable goals and developing a understanding of how to advance those goals. If you go into coaching for the deplorable reasons, like seeking fame or an ego-boost, your players will know and they will not respect you as powerful.

delight in Teaching
Your key reason for instruction should be to support kids in maturing into well-developed adults. Of course winning is primary, but if it really is the only thing you care about, you won’t be able to acquire any satisfaction when you do find the gargantuan games. You have to give yourself a chance to like the game, along with making it fun for your student athletes.

Have Patience
All astronomical athletes have had a colossal coach leisurely them who was patient enough to stutter them the significant skills for their sport. Patience is not something everyone is born with, but it can be learned with time and experience. Many times a talented player will not invent until they finally catch that one bit of coaching advice that makes everything click for them. As a coach, you must originate clear to be patient with all of your players so that you will be there when their talent explodes.

secure Organized
You can’t regain everything done that you will want to unless you have a solid, regimented schedule. Most NFL coaches are well-known for their attention to detail and organization, so you should pattern yourself after the top of the profession. design the most out of your minute practice time each day. Know what you need to earn done that day before you commence practice. Discuss any key issues with your assistant coaches before setting your schedule so that there are no surprises once the players are on the field and ready to go.

rush an Efficient, Fast-Paced Practice
Do not ruin precious practice time on conditioning and low-importance drills. Many coaches, especially at youth football levels, will fabricate the mistake of grinding their players through useless drills impartial to thunder toughness. Toughness and conditioning will both befriend more from a snappily, tidy practice with quality drills. Focus on drills that fabricate the skills your individual players are lacking. Of course, all fundamentals need to be refreshed from time to time, but you shouldn’t slay excessive time on the things they already do well. Minimize “standing around” time in your practices.

Many youth football coaches employ too grand time teaching by talking instead of active teaching. It is considerable more effective to limit your explanation to short bursts after each player has race through the drill. snappily demonstrate them what they did scandalous or good during the drill and open the next player. You can continue talking while the players are in motion, but many coaches will bring the entire team’s practice to a standstill. Attention span can be a dilemma for kids, especially at the younger levels, so more information will be retained if you retain them intriguing and focused on the practice.

Keeping these basic ideas in mind will aid any coach with their youth football team, no matter what the level or age-group. Enthusiasm, patience, and efficiency are the keys to success in winning and developing ample youth football players. More tips will be available in future parts to this series.NFL Football History. A Brief Overview

Who knew abet then in the 1920’s that the National Football League would seize the path to become what it has? In the 1920’s, a group of businessman and sports enthusiasts from the middle of America gathered in Canton, Ohio in a car showroom to discuss and strategize how they would grasp pro-football from a disorderly, ruthless game of disgrace to that of an organized league.

It is during this meeting in Canton in the showroom where the men defined rules, traded ideas, elected a board. The fresh league would be called the American Professional Football Association.

From the wooden, dusty arenas of the midwest including Hammond, Indiana, Akron, Ohio, and Rock Island, Illinois to the Duluth Eskimos in 1926 to dapper Bowl 111 where Joe Namath and the AFL’s modern York Jets displaced the NFL ancient guard.

In 1932, the first NFL championship game was played indoors on 80-yard field. While a lot about the game has evolved since the 1920’s, the emotion and afflict of the football game remains the same.

Reach Blocking in Youth Football

February 4th, 2010 by arely4705

Reach blocks on interior linemen are doable if the line splits are tight and the defenders are not too wide. But in youth football, blocking the end man on the line of scrimmage (EMLOS), usually a defensive end, is near impossible for most tight ends. In youth football, the play every team is trying to defend is the sweep, so EMLOS players line up and play wider than the High School, College and Pro teams and the youth EMLOS player is very conscious of not being reach blocked. That is something even poorly coached youth football teams work on quite a bit. Hence that is why most reach blocks in youth football on the EMLOS player that is half-way disciplined, fails.

On the other hand, the easiest block in youth football is the down block. This is a tactic that has your offensive linemen blocking the next man down to their inside, often over their offensive team mate. Even the weakest offensive linemen on most teams can make this block. Momentum is always in the same direction and all we are looking for here is to stop penetration, no movement on the defender is required.

Using this scheme, the EMLOS player is usually pinned in (Pin Block), by an easy block by a running back positioned in the slot or wing position, outflanking the EMLOS player. The “Pin” block can even be executed by a motioning player from the other side of the formation that comes across the formation and then when the motion man is just to the outside shoulder of the EMLOS, the ball is snapped and the EMLOS player is flanked and easily blocked by the motion man. Some youth teams even use a crack block to accomplish this, by motioning a back from very wide on the playside to block the playside EMLOS player. This is often a devastating block, but requires very good timing and a requirement that the motioning player does not block the EMLOS player in the back or below the knees.

I coached a reach blocked sweep for 9 years, it worked well when we had a very athletic and aggressive tight end and a blazer at tailback. But when teams widened their defensive ends or we didn’t have that stud tailback and tight end, the play failed. After going to a down and pin scheme 6 years ago, the play has been very consistent regardless of talent.

When coaching youth football well, you want to put your kids in situations where they have the best chance of succeeding. Reach blocking is one technique most youth football teams probably want to avoid.

This “75th Anniversary Collector’s Edition” 2-disc set of POPEYE THE SAILOR MAN classic cartoons is well worth having, at least for the first disc.

Casual fans may not know that there has never been an “official” release of the classic Popeye cartoons, on VHS or DVD, in the history of home video. The best the one-eyed sailor’s fans could ever get were either iffy bootleg collections or a handful of murky public-domain short subjects.

VCI’s set is also comprised of PD shorts, but some work has been done to them and the package has been treated with the respect it deserves (except for the simple and rather disappointing cover, which belies the quality within. Too bad Leslie Cabarga - a cartoonist and author of “The Fleischer Story” - wasn’t brought in to do a better one).

The stars of the package are the three Technicolor 2-reelers created by Max and Dave Fleischer in the later 1930s, POPEYE THE SAILOR MEETS SINDBAD THE SAILOR, POPEYE THE SAILOR MEETS ALI BABA’s FORTY THIEVES, and ALADDIN AND HIS WONDERFUL LAMP. These are three of the grandest, most colorful, and most imaginative cartoons of the golden era, and they’ve been restored and color-corrected and look - while not perfect - at least better than they have in a long while. As usual, ALADDIN is in somewhat worse shape than the first two, but it still looks better than I’ve ever seen it before. These cartoons feature some of the Fleischers’ finest animation and deepest and most creative backgrounds (including 3D effects). SINDBAD in particular is a favorite.

In addition, six other Fleischer Popeyes are included, all from the late `30s B&W series. Titles include I’M IN THE ARMY NOW, LITTLE SWEE’ PEA (another favorite), I NEVER CHANGES MY ALTITUDE, PANELESS WINDOW WASHER, DATE TO SKATE, and CUSTOMERS WANTED. They look varying degrees of good, but again, better than they have in many years.

The second disc contains 25 Popeye adventures from the Famous Studios years; ME MUSICAL NEPHEWS (1942) is in B&W, while the rest are in Technicolor and represent the years 1952-1957. Frankly, I have no interest in these things. They look fine, though (the B&W one is the worst), but they make my skin crawl. BIG BAD SINBAD (1952) gets most of its footage from the earlier Fleischer 2-reeler (without credit), and even worse, POPEYE’S 20TH ANNIVERSARY (1954) uses footage from later, and lesser, Famous Studios offerings (although it does have a cartoon Bob Hope, Jimmy Durante, and Martin & Lewis offering tributes to Popeye). I don’t see any reason to list (or watch) these cartoons, but they are there if you want them.

Cartoon fan supreme Jerry Beck contributed to the package, and provides commentary on the 3 Technicolor Fleischers, and the package liner notes. Frankly, I didn’t find his commentary all that fascinating (sorry, Mr. Beck), but casual fans might.

The SRP is $19.99 and it’s worth it. On the other hand, there’s another 75th Anniversary Popeye DVD set out there, this one from Koch. It’s got 3 discs and 85 cartoons, all from the TV era of the 1960s. It’s $30, and I wouldn’t buy it for a tenth of that, so there ya are.

VCI should be commended for their attempt, if not their execution. The Fleischer cartoons look pretty good, especially considering their age. Certain points in the black and white cartoons don’t have enough contrast, but the two-reel color cartoons look great. I had no problems viewing the cartoons on disc one (which, fortunately, contains the most important cartoons…the Fleischer Studio releases). However, the Famous Studio cartoons on disk two are riddled with transfer problems. There are numerous places where the screen goes blank, the picture pixilates, or the picture flickers. These are issues that are a result of transfer, not of source, so they are inexcusable.

Another problem with the set…when selecting individual episodes, the DVD continues to the next episode instead of returning to the menu, at the completion of the selected episode.

If you want a cheap way to see some old Fleischer Popeyes without any added sound effects (as on the Good Times release) this is probably the way to go.

This film has not had the exposure it deserves, since it is truly a masterpiece, not only of Mexican film but of international film in general. It takes the idea of viewing one story from different perspectives to new heights, as we watch how ten different things can all be happening at once, without any of those involved realizing what is going on.

Buy,Download, Or Stream El Callejon De Los Milagros! Click Here

The film uses a technique that has now been copied ad nauseum, beginning each section with a title screen containing one character’s name and then telling the “same” story from that character’s perspective. But each of these perspectives is completely disconnected from the others and creates a set of snapshots of the life on Miracle Alley at one point in time.

Because each character is so different from the others (a middle-aged man in an unhappy marriage, a young woman struggling to survive in a heartless world, a wealthy but homely woman who doesn’t fit into the society around her), the film gives a great overview of different types of people who probably do exist in Mexico today, all so very diverse. Could be an eye-opener for many American viewers who look at Mexicans as one big indistinct mass, since this film shows just how different the people living on one tiny street can be.

It truly is my favorite movie of all times (and I have seen a lot!), so I must recommend it.

Bad news, contrary to what the package says, this edition has Full Screen transfer… but at least the extras are really good, and the english subtitles are removable

Fans have been clamoring for Danny Phantom DVDs for ages, and while it’s very exciting to finally get some, this is more than a little disappointing. The back cover claims “It’s a scary good time with the COMPLETE first season of Danny Phantom.” (emphasis mine.) However, it only contains the first 13 episodes, while season one was twenty episodes long. Similarly, the “Season Two” set contains episodes 14-26 and does NOT include the fan favorite “The Ultimate Enemy,” which is probably why many fans wanted this one to begin with.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Danny Phantom- Season 1! Click Here

Save your money for a REAL box set that has all twenty episodes, plus extras and everything a season box set should have. This, sadly, isn’t it.

Danny Phantom did the impossible for this cynical viewer; it made me love cartoons all over again. A wonderful lighthearted gem that told the story of a boy growing up while handling his ghost powers in a children’s network managed to create depth, character development, and story arcs that increasingly gets better each episode (unfortunately to drop by the poorly conceived Season Three).

Season One obviously starts at the beginning, where we’re introduced to the main cast and their eccentric personalities. Little by little, the majority of them grow into their defined roles: Danny slowly gains confidence as he balances hero life with his normal alter ego, his older sister Jazz realizes the truth behind her brother and supports his decision in secret while softly embracing her family’s ghost life, Valerie turns from a spoiled, rich brat to a kick butt ghost hunter out for revenge (and later, justice), etc. But truly it is the character Vlad Masters who shines with his debonair, mysterious, and complicated persona–his opposites and similarities with Danny all clear, a myth arc that plays a key role on Danny’s struggle with darkness.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Danny Phantom- Season 1! Click Here

There’s a lot of continuity despite half of the episodes remaining as filler, but considering it’s the first season, those fillers really establish the characters and elements we all learned to love over time. Most of the episodes are solid: “Fanning the Flames” established a solid story while making the Danny/Sam romance lovable (a farcry when Season Three makes it deplorable), “Bitter Reunions” breaks the status quo and marks the beginning of the manipulatively awesome Vlad, “Shades of Gray” takes a pre-existing character and breathes new life into her as Valerie turns from pampered princess to hardened ghost hunter, and of course there’s the magnificent “My Brother’s Keeper” which starts the excellent character development of Danny’s older sister Jazz who starts off as a know-it-all constantly shielding Danny from the harsh realities of life. There, she begins to see the potential in her kid brother.

Some are only average at best: “13″ (decent, but without the oomph), “Teacher Of The Year” (possibly the most heavy moral focused episode on DP; so much so that it feels more a Saturday Morning educational program then an Action/Comedy) while others are just plain bad: “Splitting Images” (which started Danny’s Growing Darkness Arc, but mushed it with a antagonist who lost his purpose halfway through the series and a jarring concept of right vs. wrong between Danny and Sam). And so forth.

The DVD only covers the first 13 episodes. There are no extras, but the episodes themselves are in good quality. And I will give Nickelodeon credit; they did put the episodes in their PROPER chronological order. All except “Parental Bonding” (episode two) and “One of a Kind” (episode 3) which got switched with each other. The DVD covers, both front and back are also prone to error. The first volume alone for example has Danny with his “DP” chest insignia; something he does not receive until Season Two (partly covered in the second DVD).

Hardcore fans will feel ripped off while the casual (the type who considers DVD extras more luxury then mandatory) may enjoy it. Keep in mind though the average price for this is expensive; a problem that would have be fixable if they had put in all 20 episodes in one boxed set, but for just 13, it may be too much.

If that doesn’t bother you (and considering none of us knows if there ever will be a “true” DP Boxed set), this is probably the best news to come for DP fans. If it does, then it’s advisable that you don’t get it.

I honestly wish this review rating gave me the option to put in halves because with the non-existent extras, it’s more 3.5 then four stars. It truly is a mixed blessing at best.

This is one of the best, if not the best, sports story ever. This is just one true story from the famed Highland Rugby Team (who just won their 19th straight national championship in 2009). There is a reason for their greatness. You’ll understand when you see this phenomenal film. This was my favorite film of the year.

Forever Strong is a wonderful, albeit underrated film about a young man who discovers what’s really important in his life after he nearly throws it away in a freak car accident. Sean Faris finally does a film he can be proud of (hopefully forgetting that cliche Never Back Down)while Gary Cole shines as the coach who shows his players what the true meaning of integrity and honor are. This film did not get the accolades it deserved. It is right up there with Remember the Titans and Friday Night Lights as a classic sports film.

If you order all 3 seasons individually as opposed to this bundle it is $35 less than this pack. Normally buying a set should save you money so please avoid this one and buy the individual seasons as part of a Super Saver eligible order.

I own a lot of tools using the Makita 18 Volt LXT platform. My experience with both the chargers and batteries is good. No electrical problems of any sort.

The Jig Saw…this saw reminds me of my corded Bosch 1590 jig saw. The cuts are good, the weight is similar (enough heft to stay steady and smooth) with easy control of the tool. The Makita uses T shank blades (like the corded Bosch) and I use Bosch blades in the Makita because I find them to be excellent.

The Makita has both a dust blower and a LED lighting system to help you make accurate cuts. I especially appreciate anything that makes the work easier to see…better vision = better results. Makita makes it easy to stay on your cut lines.

The Bosch 1590 is considered the “standard” to measure jig saws. While I generally prefer corded tools, this Makita is an excellent choice for the times I want to go cordless.

If you already own some Makita LXT tools, this bare version of the jig saw is an excellent addition to your bag. The tool is well built and a pleasure to use. I have used both Dewalt and Bosch cordless jigs and I prefer my Makita to either of them.

I bought the 6 piece LXT set a year ago and have been very happy with those tools. I felt like I got a good deal on those tools, but the Jigsaw alone (with no batteries) cost nearly 35% of what I paid for the rest of the set. I don’t feel like I got a good deal, but the tool itself works pretty good. I’ve cut through 2.5″ poplar with no problems. The battery seems to last as long with the jigsaw as the other tools in the set like the recipro saw.

Im a craftman but trade and i use a jig saw almost everyday this is a good jig saw to own,it is lite and it cuts as good as any corded saw that i have ever use,and even better no cord to drag around.the quality is excellent.

The good: Side vent, very bright, quite fan, easy menus, rapid shutoff. The bad: Can’t adjust the size of the image, picture does not appear as crisp as my old HP VP6111. For the money, this is a nice projector. I don’t believe the picture is as clear for TV and movie viewing. I compared it to my older HP projector and I thought my HP was clearer. I will check it again tonight. It should be good for powerpoint presentations.

This projector is very good.

Especially, if you want to use this project in your room, it’s perfect.

Recent trends in projector is reducing the size ans weight.

But due to the reduced size the contrast ratio and brightness is decreasing even though they are portable.

But this projector provides best quality brightness and contrast ratio, which means the resolution is great!!! Now, I connected this projector with my computer and home theater.

I highly recommend this item!!!!
