Fundamentals to Football - Ball Handling, Tackling, and Catching - Do You Have What it Takes?

February 4th, 2010 by allie7281

When a receiver catches the ball they need to immediately put it into a secure ball carrying position. A great catch can be broken down into three steps: First, keep your arms extended out in front of your body with your hands out forming an imaginary triangle with your fingers and thumbs. Second, keep your eyes on the ball through the entire catch. Third, roll the ball into a secure ball position before you take your eyes off the ball. Bad habits can form easily as many receivers look away mid catch to scan the field for defenders. Taking your eye off the ball increases incomplete passes, fumbles, and turnovers. To overcome this habit set up a simple drill where two players pass the ball to each other stopping at each critical step: the catch, the follow through, and the tuck.

Points on tackling safely and effectively

Learning how to perform a proper tackle is fundamental to the game of football. If you, or your players don’t take tackling seriously you will not stop the offense and could also cause injuries. Here are three important steps to practice:

First, plant yourself in front of your opponent. An excellent technique is to plant your foot in the middle of your opponents. Also, at this time thrust your arms backward to prepare for the next step.

Second, push your other foot keeping your knees low and bent, and in sync with your feet throw your hands up hard around the offensive player. At this point you are well planted in front and your head should be in direct contact. Never, ever, ever tackle with the top of your head down, keep it up and square against your opponent. You need to literally imagine that the football is a big hamburger and you want to bite it and not slam your forehead against it.

Third, at this point you have successfully grabbed your opponent and all that’s left is to lunge your hips forward and bear all of your momentum against your opponent. The squarer you are in the first step the easier it will be to perform the third step.

Angle tackling

The reason for angle tackles is simple, cover the shortest area to get to the tackle, but there is still a great need to practice this technique. This can be done by having a player run with the ball on a straight line with the defender at any angle. As the defender he will need to adjust his body to cover the shortest distance towards the ball carrier, and make the stop by placing his foot squarely in front, and remembers for safety to put his head in front of the ball carrier. The tackle is completed as the defender wraps his hands tightly around the opponent, straightens his hips and pushes the opponent to the ground or off sides.

The High Toss Football Catch

As a receiver, or any player that is going to catch a pass, you know that not all passes are going to go right to the chest. As such you need to practice the high passes so that you know to react, here are some basics: The first and most important is that you extend your arms and keep your hands together in a diamond type shape to catch that football. When you have your hands extended you are performing a proper catch, remember, and don’t ever catch it with your body. Once you have your hands around the ball, don’t take your eyes off the ball but follow it right into your tuck. Some receivers fear an oncoming tackle and want to check out the field as soon as possible, those receivers that follow the catch with their eyes are going to catch more and receive more playing time.

I’ve been waiting for this a long time. I even wrote DIC entertainment 4 years ago to find out when ALF Tales and The ALF animated series would be released. There was no answer. Now my prayers have been answered. It may sound like hyperbole, but the ALF cartoons rank with Rocky & Bullwinkle and other Jay Ward/Bill Scott creations - Fractured Fairy Tales, Mr. Peabody, Dudley Do-Right, George of the Jungle, et al - as some of the funniest cartoons ever created. Not in the same genre as cartoons from the golden age of the movie studios - MGM, Tex Avery, Warner Bros. etc. - but of same limited animation as R&B where story and dialog count as the essential elements, these mini-masterpieces have done more than achieve a high level of hilarious, dead-on satire, but have also captured the spirit of the time in which they were created.

Finally! After years of wishful thinking, it’s happened. I’m so glad that animated Alf has seen the light of day! Over the years I managed to find a few PAL videotapes which I transferred to NTSC, but having so many episodes finally available on DVD is great. As was mentioned, the Alf animated series ranks up there with other modern classics. I’ve never understood why it didn’t develop more of a following among animation fans, maybe these two releases will change that. Even folks who aren’t fans of the ‘flesh and fur’ Alf owe it to themselves to check out the animated series. It is quite different from the primetime TV show, it has much more of an edge…very bizarre at times. The writing is excellent, as is the voice characterization. Awesome stuff all around, highly recommended!

I am writing this “review” to give you some numbers and info on the Transformers series and the DVD boxed-set format.
Season One had 16 episodes; Season Two had the lion’s share at 49, and Season Three had 30 even. What would have been the premiere three-parter to season four, “Rebirth,” was instead the last of the Transformers series. It was 3 more episodes, brining the grand total to 98.
Season two is *the* season for Transformers fans, as it demonstrated a huge animation improvement over the first season as well as deeper stories and more character development. All in all, season two is the nuts and bolts of the Transformers we all remember and love. Therefore, the season two, part two boxed set will, presumably, contain the last 25 episodes of the second season, wrapping up season two on DVD.
Season three (presumably to follow later next year), was the last, and followed Transformers: The Movie. In season three, Rodimus Prime and Galvatron lead the Autobots and Decepticons, respectively. Whether Rhino takes season three as one big set or two smaller ones (the probably outcome) remains to be seen, but I sincerely hope they include “Rebirth” at the end either way.
What would (should!) have kicked off season four, the three-part episode “Rebirth,” was the last three episodes of the Transformers cartoon, as the show was cancelled after that. “Rebirth” had the best animation of all, and hopefully Rhino will include it at the tail end of the Season Three boxed set(s), giving us the entire series in nice, clean boxes.
I hope Rhino follows through and puts all 98 episodes out in this great, boxed-set format. Oh, and one more thing - a widescreen movie DVD would be much appreciated, Rhino… maybe with a Peter Cullen (Optimus Prime), Frank Welker (Megatron), Leonard Nimoy (Galvatron), Judd Nelson (Hot Rod), and Robert Stack (Ultra Magnus) commentary track(s) for fun… ;) I know, I know… a long shot. But it *would* be the holy grail for Transformers fans :)
Support Rhino’s ongoing committment to Transformers DVD Boxed Sets by buying Season Two, Part One! Transform and roll out, Transfans!

The second season had 49 episodes. This set collects the first 24. Here is the official list of episodes from Rhino.com.

Autobot Spike
Changing Gears
City of Steel
Attack of the Autobots
Traitor
The Immobilizer
The Autobot Run
Atlantis Arise
Day of the Machines
Enter the Nightbird
A Prime Problem
The Core
The Insecticon Syndrome
Dinobot Island Part 1
Dinobot Island Part 2
The Master Builders
Auto Berserk
Microbots
Megatron’s Master Plan Part 1
Megatron’s Master Plan Part 2
Desertion of the Dinobots Part 1
Desertion of the Dinobots Part 2
Blaster Blues
A Decepticon Raider in King Arthur’s Court

The second season of Transformers was when everyone was going nuts over TFs. The creators, at this time, were either given much more leeway with the stories or had figured out to work within the system because, frankly, this season is spectacular. Though I saw many of these episodes only once, this is the season that my most vivid Transformers memories come from. Great stories, great characters, great quotable line. It’s all here. Transformers just doesn’t get better than the 2nd season. I can’t wait till the second half in the Summer.
Till all are won!

Apparently the survival experts have spoken and MAN VS WILD = SUPERMEGA FAKE. That’s alright with me; I am an idiot who enjoys “dumbed down” productions such as Man vs. Wild moreso than I enjoy watching Survivorman, a show in which the adventurer (i.e. Les) sits around a campfire for 7 days while he plays his harmonica and does nothing else. Survivor experts are we???…yeah…ok. I guess Surviorman is one who brings the excitement of hiking to the screen-he walks to a spot, camps in a spot and does not move.

Bear Grylls (or should I say the infamous Ed…) may camp in “hotels,” he may eat pieces of steak instead of badgers, he may jump through sheets of ice into a secretly hidden hot-tub beneath the surface of a “frozen lake,” he may even use “smoke machines” to simulate the gaseous, boiling properties of lava, but he nevertheless is more of a survival expert than you and me. Any man or woman who goes into nature and puts his/herself into situations in which he/she shows inexperienced outdoorsman how to escape quicksand, animal threats, etc. has my respect. I suppose the beetle grubs he eats are fake as well…. After using these techniques he displayed for creating compasses, building camps, and even learning of the different types of insects and plants that are edible in regions I myself have visited (i.e. the Moab desert and the Badlands), there is no doubt in my mind that the things he teaches are relevant and useful. While he may not camp through the entire night or eat every single disgusting insect/animal upon which he appears to dine, he nevertheless shows people what to do in moments of emergency.

I have faith in Bear/Ed, his camera crew, and the survival experts with whom he explores. While I do not doubt that some things are staged (i.e. the disclaimer at the beginning of the show states this), there is no way one can completely discount the show, even if that SURVIVAL EXPERT does not agree with the techniques he employs. Further, I have a hard time believing that the Discovery Channel would allow a show to air on their TV station that bore absolutely NO truth and applicability. That is simply ignorant. Bear Grylls is a genius and he should not have to suffer verbal abuse from naysaying simpletons.

Do not allow the negative, pessimistic reviews from those angry with and at life deter you from purchasing this DVD. Buy this DVD and you will know how to survive; more importantly, buy this DVD and you will also know what it means to be human. I will cease writing now, as I aim to write a review and not an essay.

great for the price. 13 episodes. and as a bonus there’s bears mission everest. great buy.

This version has less footage than the version you order on line at the Discovery Channel website. This version does not have the commentary with survival experts. Discovery Channel is trying to pull a fast one on us.

I loved this show when it was on, and then it just dissappeared and the discovery channel website said nothing about it which was frustrating. I was thrilled to see that the show was being released on dvd. There are like 24 episodes in this set and they are all good. I have given this as a gift to several people and it is very popular. Many people never saw the show when it was on and so it is all new to them.

The survival stories are amazingly recreated with actors and on camera interviews with the real life survivors. Not everyone survives in these stories and you can kind of quickly figure that out when that person never shows up on screen in an interview. It is sad. I highly recommend this set if you enjoy shows like this. I had a few problems with the dvds skipping (right out of the box) but it tolerable and did not happen on each disc.

If you are a fan of the really hot blues singer, Tab Benoit, you will really enjoy this movie. Wonderfully done and really moving! It’s filmed around the home of Tab in Louisiana. If you get a chance to see it in an Imax Theatre, it will be well worth the price of a ticket. The fabulous sound and scenery is great to watch on the BIG screen. I can’t wait to see it again in my own home. The wetlands and destruction of Hurricane Katrina will really move you.

This is an awesome documentary depicting LA wetlands and Katrina information that is further enhanced with entertainment and narration from Tab Benoit and Amanda Shaw. I love the under-water videos, and the flood footage really provide an explanation of what happened to my house, which is outside the levees in Bayou Sauvage. 8.5 feet of water settled and receded in one day and everything was lost by the time we were allowed to return to the city. Hats off to Amanda and Tab for bringing everyone’s attention to the wetlands issues on the gulf coast!

I almost didn’t buy this machine because I was worried about some of the negative reveiws I’ve read about it from users. However, it was the only machine its price range that really caught our eye, so we went ahead and purchased it and have been using it for about six months. It is hands down the best machine I’ve ever owned. It has great features, and the espresso is the best espresso I’ve made at home, and better than most espresso I can buy in american coffee shops. A quick rundown of the great features.

1. It looks great. It heats up quickly, and it is very simple to use.

2. The size of the water resevoir is pretty generous. It holds enough water for about 24 shots. You can expect to get a little less if you are steaming a lot of milk, but if you are steaming at the recommended temperature, the machine is very water efficient, and you shouldn’t see a dramatic drop. We use it every day to make at least two drinks (at leeast 4 shots), a lot more on the weekends, and we refill only about once a week, roughly. The design also makes it quite easy to refill, I’ve been in the middle of steaming or pulling a shot when I realized the reservoir was low, and refilled whiled pulling the shot. This is awfully convenient.

3. The machine comes with a disc you can put inside the porta filter to make a sort of fake crema by whipping the coffee, which is popular on upper-end machines these days. However, if you are using good coffee, and grind your beans fresh, and brew the coffee at the recommended temperature, the machine produces a wonderful genuine crema without the disc. I never get an espresso in a coffee house with a crema as good. (crema has more to do with the the quality of the coffee than the machine, but cheaper machines that pull the coffee way too hot never produce good cremas because of the crazy temperatures.)

4. The steam wand does a great job of genlty steaming and frothing without scalding the daylights out of your milk. I’ve heard a lot of complaints about the steamer, but in my experience it works perfectly, and easily.

5. It does come with an adaption for pods, if you’re into pods (blech.)

6, I love that the machine has a temperature gague that allows you to control the temperature of your steam and coffee, and not just indicator lights. It allows you to have a lot more control over the quality of your espresso.

A few things that are so so, the included tamp is flimsy and useless, get yourself a nice heavy one. The drip tray does feel a little light and cheap compared to the rest of the machine, but it is perfectly functional. The Cup warmer isn’t very successful at warming cups. But these are minor quibbles I have with it.

I’m sure if I were willing to pay 4 or 5 times as much, I’d get a better espresso, but for the price, I couldn’t be happier with this machine. It beats any of the little starter machines you get, and makes better espresso than machines that cost twice the price, in my experience. I’m very happy with this machine.

I wanted to share with others what I wish I had known before I bought this machine. If I had known these things, I wouldn’t have bought it. Unfortunately, there are a lot of fake reviews out there, which I read before buying, so beware!

1.There is only one boiler for both espresso and steam. Espresso and steam require two different temperatures. To get a latte, you have to switch between temperatures, and either way the delay to make the temperature switch is unacceptable. I make my espresso first, then switch to steam, wait two to three minutes, then make the froth. Repeat this for each latte you make.

2.The water reservoir is small and requires frequent refilling. However, I use a measuring cup with a spout, to refill the water without removing the reservoir. You just pull the tank out enough to pour the water in. Then push the tank back in.

3.The porta filter comes apart. There is a basket inside the porta filter that has three little bumps. The basket slides into the porta filter with the bumps lined up with notches, then you twist the basket so that it stays in the porta filter. The problem is that the twising motion of removing the porta filter from the espresso machine causes the basket to shift, and the result is that you often lose the basket when you go to bang out your grounds. The basket is very hot, so to retrieve it is an issue.

4.After making the first espresso, the porta filter remains filled with soupy grounds. It is very messy. If you’re making a series of shots, this is a very big disadvantage. You have to carefully clean it. Usually involves rinsing under the sink. Then you have to heat the porta filter again for the next shot.

5.It is advertised that it has a “pull-out knock box “. It doesn’t. It has a flimsy plastic drip tray with a metal face, and if you banged your grounds out on this, I’m sure you’d break it.

6.It drips a lot. There is a tray under the unit that pulls out for pouring out drippings. It comes out all at once, so it may spill if you have a lot of drippings in there. It drips after you’ve pulled a shot. It drips even more when you steam. I put a cup under the porta filter to catch drips. It can be a little tricky to align the drip tray when putting it back in, but not a big deal.

7.The tamper is a flimsy plastic thing. When I bought it I pictured a metal one with weight for tamping.

8.It is hard to get the steam bucket (not included) up under the steam wand. It is not flexible, though it does rotate. It is awkward.

In summary, I would not have bought it if I knew all these things, but I live with it now that I have it. I wouldn’t return it. It is very good looking, makes decent espresso, and is tolerable for occasional use. I use it about once a week.

First off, this machine LOOKS great. But unfortunately, that’s where the attraction ends. You see, I too used a little Krups $45 espresso machine for years. But it was a heck of a lot easier to use, and made consistently better espresso/cappucinno than this dog. Here’s a brief synopsis.

The reservoir holds enough water for just a couple of days. I’m constantly refilling it. After making an espresso, the thing leaks out coffee drippings for minutes on end, making a mess of the whole machine. The steamer seems to spurt out as much water as it does steam. The lever that dispenses the steam does not move in a fluid fashion. And positioning the coffee holder pod thingy is downright cumbersome.

Did I mention the thing leaks? Now you might forgive the little bugger if it made amazing capuccino…………… it doesn’t.

We bought two of these deck chairs and they look fantastic on the lanai. I feel like I’m on the deck of the Titanic when I lounge in mine. (get a cushion for it, and you’ll be more comfortable)

I use Danish teak oil to preserve the wood. Every so often, I apply it with a rag, rub it in and let the wood soak it up. Not really much bother and keeps it looking good.

I picked this TV because it has great features and is reasonably priced. It’s near the mid-point of the BRAVIA line, and has many of the important features of the XBR series TV’s, but at a more reasonable price. The 120mhz Motion Flow technology was a big selling point.

This unit is identical to the Bravia W4100 series, except the lower portion is BLACK instead of silver.

The full specifications of this model are available on the Sony Style website under ‘business’ sales, and their LCD TV listings.

I bought it from J&R as they are one of the few retailers who carry this model… HIGHLY recommend it. And totally worth the price!

Absolutly beautiful TV. 1080p and 120 Hz is an awsome combination. Highly recommend this TV. The extra cost for this is truly worth it.
