“Grey Gardens” is a one-of-a-kind documentary exploring a mother-daughter relationship. These aren’t just two anonymous people though; instead, the film chronicles Edith Bouvier Beale and her daughter, “Little Edie,” who just happen to be the aunt and cousin of Jackie Kennedy Onassis. The filmmakers, Albert and David Maysles, initially intended the film to be about Jackie’s sister, Lee Radziwill. However, after being introduced to Edith and Little Edie by Lee, they decided to shift the focus.

What makes these two women so interesting? First, they live in a giant decaying mansion (the titular “Grey Gardens”) in luxurious East Hampton. The family was extremely wealthy at one time, until Edith divorced and lost most of her money. She apparently stayed in the 28-room Grey Gardens mansion despite a lack of money for upkeep. The women show pictures of themselves from years earlier, and they were obviously beautiful society scions. However, they became more and more isolated from society as they hunkered down into their mansion At one point, the mansion was even raided by East Hampton officials, who wanted to evict the pair due to the unsanitary living conditions. Jackie subsequently helped them clean up the mansion.

All of this action, though, occurs before the film starts in 1975 (some of the back story is presented in pictures and newspaper stories). In fact, in the documentary, not much new happens: the women continue their bizarre existence in the mansion and argue. They argue a lot. Every conversation is filled with their remembrances of better times, when Little Edie was desired by wealthy men and Edith carried on an affair with a pianist. This life is so far removed from their current surroundings, and their regrets about that disparity quickly surface. Apparently, Little Edie had been living in NYC in the 1950s, before her mother had her come back home to take care of her. This arrangement was only supposed to be for a short time, but 24 years later, they are still at Grey Gardens and arguing.

Although the movie focuses on relatives of a very famous woman, the themes of living in the past and experiencing regret are so universal. The women have in many ways a typical mother-daughter relationship, but it’s also so atypical. Quite simply, they live a rather deluded existence, arguing so passionately about past events as though it still mattered or was in the present. Neverthless, the women are fascinating on so many levels, including Edie’s fashion style. Throughout the film, Edie models numerous outfits that she’s created, all accompanied by a turban. Whether she’s bald or just loves turbans is never explored. Funnily, Edie’s bizarre style has become somewhat of an ironic fashion inspiration; the DVD even features Todd Oldham explaining that he has actually used Edie’s fashion sense while designing a number of outfits!

Some people have criticized this documentary for a variety of reason, including calling the filmmakers exploitative. I don’t think that the Beales were exploited - they are both intelligent although somewhat deluded women and likely understood the implications of participating in this filming. Others have said that the material is somewhat suspect - are the Beales “worthy” of a documentary? That’s a judgment call each viewer will need to make. I enjoyed it - the film is like nothing else I’ve ever seen. Although the Beales are deluded at times, their relationship is like a Tennessee Williams play sprung to life! I wasn’t able to turn away, and I know that these women will stick with me for a long time. Most highly recommended.

The DVD extras include original trailers and a fascinating commentary track featuring the Maysles and their associates. They fill in many of the blanks about the film. Fortunately, the DVD includes subtitles, as the women constantly talk over each other during their arguments. You needn’t miss a single word of this hypnotic documentary.

This stellar portrayal of two women, a mother and daughter, who spend their days in a run down house and are ironically aunt and cousin to Jackie O, displays documentary film-making at its very best. Although much has been said about the film, the focus always tends to emphasize the sordid living conditions that Edith Bovier Beale and her unmarried daughter, Little Edie inhabit, in an old estate in Easthampton, New York. Their house has been condemned by officials in Easthampton, and they live with cats and raccoons, but they don’t give a damn about it. They are virtual recluses in their upscale community, “full of nasty Republicans.” However, the film is not about the squalor that most of us would balk at in conventional situations. Their surroundings are only a backdrop and metaphor for the lost opportunities, and isolation that the women are subjected to as societal outcasts. Whether this is by choice, or due to their eccentricities is a mixed bag, but “Big Edie” and “Little Edie” are such magnetically charged women, it is fair to say that they are their own superstars within the world they have created.

Much of the film’s pathos is magnified by the mother and daughter relationship. Little Edie, once a gorgeous, brilliant young woman feels she has been forced to sacrifice her life and a potential career as an entertainer, to look after her mother. Big Edie, once a veritable beauty in her day, was written out of her father’s will for her aspirations to become a singer, and after her divorce retreated to her sea-side estate to spend the rest of her days. It is apparent that both women are extremely co-dependent, but in spite of their inherent needs to look after each other, Little Edie is full of resentment over the arrangement. She points this out again and again, letting us know that when she is with her mother, she doesn’t feel like a woman, but rather a little girl. However, both have clearly been dominated by strict, critical male figures in their pasts, and they do enjoy a sense of freedom and independence in their solitude, even if it comes at the expense of their abilitiy to inhabit the outside world. Little Edie insists throughout the film, that she must get out and move to New York, “My days at Grey Gardens are limited” she tells the Maysles’ camera crew, who record every nuance with objectivity, and a keen eye for descriptive detail of both women and their amazing story.

This is a complex narrative, and it unfolds with intelligent, and often hilarious dialogue from both Big and Little Edie. Little Edie’s sense of fashion is truly “revolutionary” and has been copied and imitated by several designers. Big Edie is more staid, she has “had her cake, eaten it, chewed it, masticated it” while Little Edie emerges as a thwarted Goddess, who feels she never even got a bite of the cake, so to speak. She proclaims herself to be the “greatest dancer in the world” yet alone in the house with her mother, their is no other audience for her to creatively conquer. We watch her, and we are captivated by her, and we accept what she tells us, because she is so emotive and honest.

Fiction could never fully capture the beauty and the sadness that this film evokes. Although we love to laugh with it, it is also a poignant epic, magnifying moments in Big Edie and Little Edie’s lives with uncanny depth and awareness of the subjects. It is simultaneoulsy lyrical, funny and sad. Those who view it and do not understand that this is a masterpiece, are missing the point of this work. And what is that point? I believe it circles around the choices that are made for us, the choices we do make, and the choices we don’t make, and how our fates are are affected by these events.

I give “Grey Gardens” six stars, and I hope you enjoy it. It is a film that can be viewed several times, and there is always something new to discover every time it is screened.

The Maysles Brothers’ famous 1975 documentary of a former society mother and her grown daughter (both former cousins of Jackie Onassis and both named Edie Beale) falling to pieces in their similarly-dilapidated East Hampton mansion has acquired a consider cult following over the years due to the Miss Havisham qualities of its subjects, who once both were great wealthy beauties and have fallen to bare subsistence living (and who both seem clearly mentally ill). The Maysles have been greatly criticized for showcasing these women as circus oddities, but as little Edie makes clear in a tape-recorded interview included in this beautiful Criterion Collection edition, both women loved the chance to have the attention given to them; the film also made it possible for little Edie to follow her dream of moving to NYC to work, albeit briefly, as a cabaret star.

But it would also seem wrong simply to characterize the two women as free spirits doing their own thing and being fabulous, as many of the films’ cultists are mistakenly wont to do: GREY GARDENS at times seems a genuine hell for the women as well as for the viewer, who must endure the mother and daughter occasionally shrieking menacingly at one another over one another’s words. And Little Edie seems like a lost fourth sister from Chekhov, bemoaning her lost chances at matrimony and escaping to the big city. But both women seem intelligent despite their moments of mental confusion, and Little Edie’s editorializing during a Dr. Norman Vincent Peale radio broadcast (one of the film’s highlights) shows her sharpness as well as her wicked sense of humor. And it is precisely the discomfort that the film occasions — its refusal to sentimentalize these down-but-not-yet-out society survivors — that makes it seem so memorable, and such a comment on the American tendency to trash the past even while nostalgically clinging to its wreckage.

I know what a lot of people are thinking, OMG, another freakin’ bring it on movie. First of all: The franchise is really a trilogy (1,3,5), 2nd: Give this one a chance, you will be surprised. There were new lines that are repeatable, mostly spoken by the Character Gloria. These movies do present an element of cheese, but let’s face it, that is what makes them fun. You aren’t watching these with the intent in finding a new oscar contender. As soon as it was over, I wanted to watch again, something that I would never say about any of the others, except for the original. The movie finally brought it!!!! The music was good as well. I never heard a Christina Milian song in my life, and now I am looking to buy the soundtrack. It was a mixture of the 1st and 3rd movies brought together with a Step Up feel. I loved it an now i will watch it again!

At First When I started watching it I thought that it was going to be stupid but then after I got into it I really enjoyed it…. I am going to add this to my collection with the rest of them….. But Please No More

I have two girls 4 & 12yrs old, they have watch all the bring it on movies, and this would be the only one that didn’t get them excited. the movie was ok, but nothing to get them up and dancing about. they would rather watch the old bring it on movies over & over again.

I’m not a Brad Pitt fan. His physical attributes don’t astound and thrill me! But, I’ve got to give it to him: He was convincing in his dual roles as the coffee shop sweetie and Mr. Death. Claire Forlani, whom I’ve never seen in a film before was simply luminous. She’s the perfect Susan in this parable of one man’s last days on earth. Anthony Hopkins as Bill Parrish is remarkable, as always. He truly makes you feel as though he’s a man with little time left and has to spend the rest of his alloted time cleaning up his act, making amends with his loved ones, assuring his daughters that he loves them and has always loved them. Also, Marcia Gay Hardin and Jeffrey Tambor are both extremely good as the number two daughter (in her father’s heart) and her slightly inept (business wise) husband. They’re both touching. I wasn’t put off by the length of the film. I think we should take the time to savor some things in life. Slow down, relax and enjoy this beautiful offering from Martin Brest. You did a good job, Marty!

I’ll admit that only morbid curiosity led me to watch this movie upon it’s initial release. The premise of this remake sounded interesting, but the over the top costs and production problems had been tabloid fodder for months. When it didn’t do blockbuster business, not many people were surprised.

It’s a shame that this movie didn’t do better than mediocre reviews and lukewarm boxoffice receipts. There I sat in the audience marveling at the gorgeous design and antiques, not to mention the exquisite costume design. So many films these days go for established designers, but this movie used a studio designer much like the days of the old Hollywood system. The attention to detail is exquisite.

As for the acting, it all boiled down to one scene for me. Anthony Hopkins describing the first time he’d ever had a lamb sandwich to Brad Pitt. It turns into one of the most beautiful remembrance speeches of a widower for the wife he still grieves. Needless to say even this heartless cynic got a bit misty. To have a man express such love without sounding condescending or corny is quite a feat. It’s enough to make you believe in the power of a good actor.

Brad Pitt also deserves kudos for this role. Despite living through a personal hell and sustaining an injury, he does a great job in his double role. I thought the scene in which Death says good bye to Claire Forlani’s character was some of his best acting.

This film has something that most flicks today can only dream of: class. It doesn’t spoon-feed the plot to you, and it doesn’t have useless dialogue crammed into every nook and cranny. Those who say this film drags should stick to children’s cartoons. There is so much happening beneath the surface. Some just tune out the gaps in dialogue, and that’s a real tragedy, because that’s when the most happens, and the film really shines. Pitt, Hopkins, and Forlani are tremendous. Pitt’s combination of power and innocence is flawless. This film is the most sophisticated to come out in a while, and the fact that the critics don’t like it doesn’t phase me one bit, nor does it surprise me. Meet Joe Black is a breath of fresh air: a truly elegant film.

This movie was a fun Steampunk Sci-Fi Adventure. Predictable but much better than most of the cookie cutter Hollywood garbage that has been in the theaters lately. All in all it was a very good war movie and worth while.

Loved the fact that I was able to watch a pre-theatrical release at home. for those of you who thought it was overpriced, 9.99 is what you pay to see a movie in the theater and I watched it with my sons, saving an addition $30.00, so this movie was a bargain. I’d highly recommend this movie to people who like the genre. Special effects were good and I really enjoyed the steampunk aspect of the weapons and vehicles. COAL POWERED SPACECRAFT AWESOME!

The movie is average but overpriced at $9.99. I would think at $9.99, I should get the movie (digital copy) when it comes out on DVD for free. The idea of pre-theatrical rental is cool and I hope to see more.

All in All if you have $10 and 2 hours to burn, buy it.

First off it’s nice to see a pre-theater release available on Amazon, though I have to agree that it is way overpriced. [...] bucks, might as well go to the theater and see it on the big screen.

As for the movie itself it’s terrible. They definitely spent all their money on the special effects instead of a writer or lord forbid a continuity director. Without ruining what little plot there is the movie is basically a fantasy movie and throw in some World War I guns and steam powered airships or spaceships if I am to believe the nonsense that passed for dialogue.

Save your money and just get it through Netflix when the DVD comes out.

“Mysterious Skin”, directed by Gregg Araki, based on a book by Scott Heim, is a very powerful, well-made film with two very good central performances. However, it is a film not everyone will like or be able to sit through.

Brian (Brady Corbet), a bookish young man who has just started to go to Hutchison Community College, is convinced that he was abducted by Aliens one night eleven years ago. On that night, five hours disappeared from his life after his little league game and he woke up in the cellar of his house with a bleeding nose. Neil (Joseph Gordon Levitt) is very aware, very early, that he is gay and at fifteen becomes a hustler, meeting johns in a local city park in Hutchison. When he turns nineteen, he travels to New York to stay with his best friend, Wendy (Michelle Trachtenberg) and starts to turn tricks there. Just as Neil leaves, Brian realizes that they may have a connection, a connection to the night where he lost five hours of his life.

“Mysterious Skin”, adapted from the book and directed by Araki, deals with some very adult issues. If you do the math, you’ll realize that the important night that effected both of their lives happened when they were eight years old and, without revealing too much of the story, the events were of a sexual nature. Throughout Neil’s life, sex is a major factor; sex is pretty much what he is. Because of these story elements, there are sexual encounters presented in the film. But Araki presents these in such a way that they are dramatic points in the story. They are clearly not meant to titillate, they are about as unarousing as watching a married couple drink coffee and read separate sections of the newspaper, but meant to illustrate points in a dramatic story, as a way to inform. During the sexual encounters, the point of view switches, almost exclusively to that of Neil or Brian. We only see the other participant when they might be seen by Neil or Brian, to see what is happening to them. The sexual acts are not pornographic, but suggestive enough that you will get the whole picture, from watching the images presented. This extremely effective method of presenting these sexual acts allows us to see how they change the two young men throughout their life.

Joseph Gordon - Levitt (TV’s “Third Rock from the Sun”) plays Neil and here is no way we could have ever guessed that he was capable of creating such a believable, indelible character. There is quite a bit of voiceover, particularly in the beginning scenes, when the two boys are eight, as each is relating the events of that summer. As we listen to Neil, there is emptiness in his voice, a harshness which seems real. As we learn more about Neil and watch him interact with others, this becomes all the more resonant. He is this person. Watching him, we completely “get” who he is, what he is, how he became that. His interactions with his mother (Elisabeth Shue) are also very believable. They are more like friends, showing us the absence of a strong paternal figure in his life. She is more interested in living her own life, having fun, meeting new boyfriends, too busy to be that concerned about her son, needing him when she is feeling down. She doesn’t want him to be upset with her. And he loves her for her camaraderie. Because there is a lack of parental involvement, he runs around, finding johns, hanging out with friends, coming in at all hours. It is a powerful performance, utterly believable.

Neil’s relationship with Wendy is also mesmerizing. Wendy meets Neil at an early age and they stick together throughout their lives, becoming his best friend, confidant and critic. She loves him, but recognizes his faults, and tries to protect others from becoming hurt. Michelle Trachtenberg does a great job of making this character come to life.

Brady Corbert is equally memorable as Brian. The flip side of Neil, Brian is quiet, introspective, possessed with finding out what happened on that night. This one night has essentially shaped his entire life. He doesn’t seem to have many friends, because he is confused. He lives with his mother (Lisa Long), a slightly more modern suburbanite. She is the sole bread winner in the family after her husband (Chris Mulkey) leaves, but also willing to say things like “Let’s hold off on talking about that until we have a piece of Peanut Butter Peach Pie that I made.” As he travels closer to understanding, he suspects that he was abducted by aliens and finds a kindred spirit in Avalyn (Mary Lynn Rajskub, TV’s “24″), the subject of a television show about alien abduction. What all of these elements do is paint a convincing, accurate picture of a confused teenager. As he reaches the conclusion about those missing five hours, we get a sense that he may have suspected the truth all along, he simply needed confirmation. The final scene, in which he learns the truth, is extremely powerful and convincing.

The performances are both great and can be excused of a couple of overly theatrical moments; both characters have at least one instance where they suddenly burst out shouting.

Araki has fashioned such a believable world, an environment in which all of these events could, and probably do happen. It is a powerful, moving, very effective film with some sequences that are very sexually suggestive.

“Mysterious Skin” is a film that will stay with me for a long time.

The devastating, far-reaching effects of child abuse are microscopically examined in Gregg Araki’s sensitive, well-produced and beautifully acted “Mysterious Skin.”

Araki has been making films for a number of years and his previous efforts (”The Living End,” “The Doom Generation” to name a couple) have been high on style but short on technical finesse. But with “Mysterious Skin,” Araki comes into his own artistically: the film is a dynamo of expressive, persuasive acting and top shelf production values. Gone is the jerky, amateurish camera work and editing but remaining is Araki’s sensitive worldview and just out-of-kilter morality.

There is no doubt here in which court Araki’s allegiance and sympathy lays but he’s enough of an artist and straight-shooter to show us both sides of this story: child molester Coach (Bill Sage) is presented, not as a monster (i.e. John Harrigan in a similarly themed “L.I.E”) but as a nice guy. Despite the morally corrupt nature of his deeds,I found myself liking Coach. And this in a nutshell is the genius of this film and in Araki’s now well-honed talent. Araki is taking big chances in his choice to go there with Coach but it is a brave and honest, though in many ways reckless, choice nonetheless.

John Gordon Levitt makes a major splash in this film. His Neil is morally lazy and a slacker and time and time again, he sets himself up as an emotional target to be used and abused by older men. He recalls his “times” with Coach fondly: “I was his favorite,” he pathetically says several times in this film. Levitt’s Neil is unable to make any kind of sincere connection with anyone: the blank, emotionally vacant look on his face when he is offered non-sexual tenderness is chilling and terrifying: he is a robot, stripped of all his feelings, able to only respond to and recognize the sexual. However misguided, Neil is on a continual search to find the warmth and caring he felt with Coach, his touchstone.

But when another of Coach’s victims, Brian (Brady Corbet) comes to Neil looking for answers, Neil recognizes him as a comrade, his facade collapses and Neil patiently and kindly tells Brian all he wants to know.

“Mysterious Skin” is likely to offend a lot of people what with it’s human and kind portrayal of an abuser but Araki cannot be faulted for presenting the whole story: he shows us, let’s remember…he does not tell us. He leaves it to us to draw our own conclusions.

I read Scott Heim’s novel “Mysterious Skin” a number of years ago, and found it powerful and challenging. When I learned that Gregg Araki was making a film based on the book, I was apprehensive. “Msterious Skin” deals with the long lasting effects of child abuse. The last thing one wants when approaching this subject from an artistic stand point, is to be in any way exploitive. The good news is that Mr. Araki’s has triumphed - his is a brilliant film. The performances throughout are outstanding - especially that of Joseph Gordon-Levitt as an in-your-face gay teen who uses sex as a means to an end - whether hustling or simply giving it away. Brady Corbet delivers in the quieter role of Brian, who has so effectively blocked the memory of his abuse that he has come to believe that he may have been a victim of alien abduction.

This is a tough little film, dealing with topics that most people shy away from - child sexual molestation, drug abuse, prostitution and homosexuality. Araki doesn’t flinch or shy away from any of them. It is a testsment to his incredible talent that he has made a film from this material which is both palatable and compelling.

Let’s face it. We’re not watching this sort of movie for great character development or intriquite plot twists. This sort of movie is all about women in bikinis, or less. This movie is an excellent piece of work, if judged with that in mind. The women are many and Hot, the situations are funny and provocative, and the outfits are skimpy, revealing and imaginative. There are few movies in this genre that can top this one. If you are a fan, Don’t hesitate to buy this flick!

this movie was good until the bob sagetish moral, meaning of life, message to the people or whatever u wanna call it came in the script.

it is like full house with nudity. if youre bored and wanna see some nudity, or girls from the early 90 in bikini. make your day.

Start with the first Bikini Summer movie. It’s the same movie only way better. You won’t have to put up with some boring subplot about helping a couple of homeless people. That could have been a nice Disney movie but doesn’t belong in Bikini Summer. And the first movie has more nudity - even a couple of full-frontal scenes. I think that gives an extra dimension to movies like this.

My kids found this movie to be interesting and silly. I liked the record. Obliging triumphs over ghastly is always a winner for me. The conception of Garfield and his friends actually living out the ending to the humorous book they’re reading is a worthy thought.

Some of the slapstick was amusing to my kids. And the fact that the superhero’s from the other planet survey like Garfield, Odie, Nermal, and Arlene in the face was funny for them.

However, I would acquire that my kids not contemplate movies where the character’s say “shut up” and that something “sucks”. So be aware that there are a few instances of these statements.

Bottom line - enthralling and droll? Yes. Language appropriate for a 6 or 8 year used? No.

This movie is completely innane, but my kids treasure it. I was a tiny surprised at its G rating–I would build this movie for older children (the villian says “shut up” which I consider is horrible for young children and the tension/violence is a diminutive scary for younger children, etc.) Unfortunately, if your kids contemplate this once, they’ll want to gape it again and again.
