I have been looking at large photo printers for a while, and I heard that the 9500 mark II was due out in May. So, I decided to save my penies. I have had this printer for about 2 weeks or so. I cannot complaine at all!!

I did a decent amount of research on this product before I decided to drop the cash for it. Unfortunatly, reviews are few and far between. Everything I heard and saw about the printer was from Canon press releases or the Web site. Not exactly a non-biased pool of information. But non the less, I took the plunge and got it. I have not regreated it one bit!

It offers large 13×19 borderless printing, amazing color reproduction, and it can even adjust the color for the type of light the photo will be viewed under. Canon also offers a full range of fantastic photo paper. I enjoy the look and feel of the Canon Photo Rag. This paper though, does not support boarderless printing. Make sure you read the print on the paper. Ink does not seem to fly out of the tanks. I have printed about 20 or so prints, and I have only had to replace the matte black tank (I do a lot of night shooting and had a bit of a learning curve to understand my new printer. It might last longer depending on your style and experience).

Since this is my first real photo printer, I had a bit of learning to do when I first plugged it in. However, the included “electronic manuel” had all the information that I needed. I was soon printing fantastic large color and B&W prints.

The construction is solid. It is not a flimsy bit of plastic that will fall apart! Opperation is quiet and fast. I have not exactly timed how long it takes to print, but it is done with a 13×19 print in just a few min. It does have a large footprint. So be ready to have some desk space! Some papers are too thick to use the top loader, ie museum etching, so you will have to front feed them. The prints will come out the back of the printer. So depending on what you print on, you will need to have the back of your printer open and free of clutter.

Over all, this printer is amazing! I know Canon has gotten some heat over its performance on glossy paper. I do not normaly print on glossy paper and have not yet done so with this printer. But on the Photo Rag Paper the prints are amazing. And the print is the important thing. Photos are ment to be seen, and this printer does an amazing job creating a print. I would definatly recomend this printer!!

I am pretty much a Canon user. All three of my cameras are Canons and I have a PIXMA MP500 (All-in-one) printer. I was just about to by a high end Epson when Canon came out with this PRO 9500MkII printer. It is one of their first pigment ink printers and the 13″ by 19″ size was what I wanted. I have been very satisfied with this purchase. Its footprint is not too big and it closes up tightly when not in use. It use of ink seems very reasonable and I am very pleased with the prints. I calibrate my monitor every two weeks and this printer gives me the colors see on the monitor (I have not calibrated the printer.) Most of my printing is for fine art photography and at a 11″ by 14″ inch size. One of the first serious prints I made was accepted in a juried show and looked great when compared to the others in the show.

I am very pleased with this printer and would highly recommend it.

This is one fine photo printer. I’ve had for almost a month and it has produced some spectacular results, whether the photo was color or black and white. One reviewer states that ink use is about equal between all the tanks. I’ve found otherwise. Ink use depends on what type of photos you are printing. Photo quality is outstanding and I find use of the Canon Semi-Gloss to be one of my favorite papers. Enjoy this printer!

I actually own one. It is hard to imagine how a picture on a TV based on the current ATSC encoding could look any better. The blacks are “black-black”. The colors are intense. The picture is bright. The only limitation I can see has more to do with the source material than with the TV itself.

I have DirectTV HD and Sony blu-ray, I also have rabbit ears for local TV. I will for the purposes of this review, ignore Analog TV and VCR, both of which are beyond obsolete.

With standard 480 source, the mosquito filtering is poor or non-existant. I am not sure if this is because of the TV, because of the upscaling of the DirectTV HD-DVR or because of the original network processing. However with true HD source (either 720P or 1080i), the results are stunning. The 3-D processing (two dimensions of the picture and one dimension of time) to interpolate intermediate frames is just stunning. With any other TV, I have learned how to see the macro blocking when the compression is running at the limit, but this TV does an incredible job of not only smoothing out the inter-frame judder, but it remarkably sharpens the picture for those interpolated frames as well. When I pause a picture with the DVR, you can see macro blocks, but as soon as you press “play”, you can actually see the motion processor cutting in.

The results with a good blu-ray disk are, well, get your popcorn and 64 oz cup of soda because it is better than a movie theater since it is brighter.

I have two complaints, both of them “nits”. The first is that it takes way too much effort to set the sleep timer. Obviously Sony did not anticipate that a lot of users would use this TV to fall asleep on the couch with. Its not a big deal, but other TVs have a one button sleep button - the height of lazy, I’ll admit. The other thing is that the “universal” remote doesn’t know how to control the DirectTV HD-DVR. Like all other universal remotes, you still need a remote caddy in your La-Z-Boy to keep all of your other ones…

Of course the obvious down side is the $7,000 price, but YGWYPF.

This television is fantastic - only problem is ….it’s too good! It reveals all of the garbage signals that the hd providers are outputting! The various compression techniques, the huge breakups and distortions, out of focus imagery - All is revealed in larger than life quality on this monitor! But, that’s why I got it. This TV is directly connected to an HD editorial suite for client viewing and when monitoring a fully uncompressed HD 4:2:2 image via HDMI from the edit suite it’s amazing.

Bluray is great too -

Too bad HD content on cable and dish is so substandard.

(And also that no one seems to be aware of this) So much for the new horizon of digital!

We now have one (1) 55inch xbr8 and two (2) 46inch xbr8s in the house. The 55 is in the living-room with all the audio equipment. One of the 46 sets is in the den and the other in the master bedroom. We have studied hundreds of other sets over the years. The Sony xbr8 technology makes the others look like they are from “Toys Are Us”. The picture is almost 3 dimentional when viewing a good blu-ray disc on a high end player. Upscaled standard definition DVDs are remarkable on this set. Good quality Film Noir is very good with the xbr8. The blu-ray of Casablanca is nothing short of amazing on the xbr8. The den set is often on most of the day (until we switch to the living room for evening viewing) and the set runs quite cool. Even viewing standard definition cable is vastly inmproved from other sets on the xbr8. Yes, it is expensive, but worth every bit of it. If watching movies is what you do–this is worth the investment. I do not thing I will be looking for another set until they “perfect” 3D for the consumer. I suspect this will be several years in the future. Now xbr8 technology in a perfected 3D format will be something to look forward to.

I have had this receiver since Aug. 1, 2009, and am very happy with it. It is missing some features like S-VHS inputs but none that I care about. I purchased it to use with HDMI devices in a 5.1 setup in one room. It works great for me and I highly recommend it.

PLUSES:

* Excellent audio.

* Good GUI that is easy to use, but you must read the manual first and consult it as you go (at least I had to).

* Good readable front and on-screen display with options for what is displayed while unit is operating (device, sound field, etc) and nameable inputs.

* Four HDMI inputs.

* Attractive design.

* Exceptional Auto Format Decoding that produces very good sound from 2-channel sources with clear centered dialogue and some LFE output. I use this setting exclusively for all devices and it unfailingly detects the proper format.

* Very easy and very accurate auto speaker setup using included microphone. It set my front speakers to large instead of small but other than that I didn’t have to change any of the settings.

MINUSES

* Poor manual. Too small in size, not well-written. This seems like a common problem with electronics these days, but maybe it is just because devices are more complicated.

* You must purchase a separate device to use with iPod/iPhone.

* No S-VHS inputs (not at all important to me, but might be to some users).

* Somewhat confusing speaker input placement on back of receiver. (I would have put the front speaker inputs above the surround back inputs and next to the center channel input.)

I use the receiver with a Sony LCD TV, Samsung Blu-ray player, Cox Cable DVR, Tivo HD, Energy Classic speakers and Infinity subwoofer. No compatibility problems encountered. I use it is a smallish room (11 x 13) and hardly ever set the volume above 35, so it seems to have plenty of power.

Before I bought this receiver, I tried a Pioneer VSX-919, which is a good receiver that gets excellent reviews. However, I could never get it to sound right to me. The Sony sounded good to me from the get go. That doesn’t mean one is better than the other, but for me the Sony was the better-sounding receiver. One feature I really liked on the Pioneer was iPod/iPhone support without having to buy add-on devices. Sony and other manufacturers should do that!

I am very happy with this purchase and would recommend it to others who want a mid-range receiver with good sound, good features and nice appearance.

I just received this unit yesterday, and so far it has met all my expectations. however, I haven’t yet received my HDMI cables (they’re due today) so I can’t yet comment on the features that utilize the HDMI. This thing looks great, and not only that, I signed up for the super saver shipping, and got it 2 days after I ordered it, which is awesome! Since I have never used HDMI, I was a little confused at the back panel, there was no component hookup that was labeled “DVD” so I just plugged my DVD player into the BD hookup, which I assume is for Blu-Ray, but it works great. I also hooked up my xbox 360 and Wii. I have a Logitech Harmony One remote and it only took me about 3 minutes to re-configure it with this new receiver. Overall, so far, I am very happy with this purchase. I have owned the same Sony A/V receiver (can’t recall the model) since 1999 and have always been very pleased with Sony’s performance and reliability.

This thing looks great, not a lot of buttons on the front, very sleek and fits in well with the rest of my stuff. I have some older Bose Acoustimass 5 speakers that I’ve owned since 1998, probably time for an upgrade to a 5.1 system, but for now, I am happy with this purchase.

UPDATE: I just got my $0.03 HDMI cables from Amazon, that’s right 3 cents for each and they are awesome! Why anyone would pay $30-100 for these things is beyond me, but when I got it all hooked up (it was very easy) I was blown away by the picture on my TV. Sweet!!

Sony STR-DN1000 7.1-Channel Audio Video Receiver (Black)

I purchased this on August 4 as an upgrade to a receiver that was not capable 1080p pass through. I received it and hooked it up on Friday August 14. I connected a Sony PS3 and a TiVo HD using Philips HDMI Gold cables Version 1.3a. I used the same type cable to connect to a Vizio 1080p True HD TV. I got sound but no picture.

I checked the settings on the TV and the receiver to make sure it was on all the right settings. I even tested the same cable by connecting it directly to the PS3 and I got picture immediately. I contacted Sony online customer support and went through the power reset and unplug hard reset–nothing. I was told to call the customer service line because I would have to send it in for repair. I called, and went through the procedures again, and they told me to ship the entire thing, box and all, to Texas for repair. At least they sent me a shipping label so I didn’t have to pay for that, but that was because I asked for it.

They called me a week and a half later and said that they could not duplicate the problem and asked for the exact components and models that were hooked up. They said they would attempt to duplicate my configuration as best as possible and call me back. They didn’t. Instead, I received it back 4 days later (Friday September 4).

Due to poor packaging (they put the remote and book directly against the top of the receiver without any bubble wrap in between, so when any pressure was put on the top of the box…) the entire top of the receiver is dented in. Plus they didn’t send back my original box. Oh, and to make matters worse. The batteries they sent it back with were dead. And of course it was a Friday night that I discovered all of this and had to wait until Tuesday morning to call them back (Labor day weekend).

Over the weekend I looked through the instructions and saw that it specified HDMI 1.3a Category 2. I did some research and I even called Phillips, the cable manufacturer, to confirm that the cables were indeed HDMI 1.3a Category 2. But they didn’t know because it isn’t printed on the wire. So I did some more online searching and discovered the two different category specifications didn’t come out until October last year, and that if the cable is not specified as Category 2, it is a standard Category 1. Well, I had purchased my cables last May, 2008. However, the HDMI website has stated that many HDMI cables under 5 meters of length that were made before the HDMI 1.3 specification can work as Category 2 cables, but this is not guaranteed (”HDMI Knowledge Base[...]

So out of a hunch that it would only work with a Category 2 cable, I went and purchased a Sony HDMI 1.3a Category 2 cable at Walmart. I hooked it all up and it WORKED. It is interesting that it works with HDMI 1.3a Category 1 cables hooked up from the components (PS3 and TiVo HD), but requires the Category 2 for the output signal to the HDTV. But now, I have a physically damaged unit…

Today I called the Sony Service Center in Laredo, Texas and he said, “It had nicks and scratches all over it when we received it from you.” That’s patently false, because it doesn’t have any nicks or scratches on it NOW, just the dent.

I also asked about my box, and he said that I SHOULD have been told not to send my original packaging box if I wanted to keep it, because they recycle them. I asked if I could get another one and he said they don’t have them there.

To save time and trouble, I asked if I could simply get a new housing or cover sent to me to fix it myself, instead. But I was told that it’s against policy and I would have to ship the whole thing back again and they would “repair” the damage. However, the CSR also told me he could give me the parts catalog and I could purchase one myself. Really, you mean I could spend even more money for this receiver buying a part and paying for shipping to fix something that they caused?! Awesome! Thanks for that.

Frustrated, I asked him to go ahead and send me another shipping label, but then he said that they would have to see pictures of the damaged unit as well as the undamaged box so they can investigate it first. And he also warned that if they don’t have the part, they would have to get it from Sony and it could take a long time!

So now, at best, I will get to start USING my new receiver on the 28th of September? Almost 60 days after purchasing it? That’s 2 months of my warranty gone as well…

And now, I checked online today; and the current price for the receiver is a full $100 LESS than what I paid. Heck, if I ordered another one today, I would probably get it SOONER!

This was my first Sony receiver… I will probably never purchase a Sony stereo or TV product ever again. PS3 is awesome, but I just hope It doesn’t ever need repairs.

I’ve owned scanners for the last 30 years. This is by far the best one I’ve ever had. It’s incredibly powerful. I purchased it for my home as I’ve got a handheld BCT-245 in my truck. It’s reception is so much better than the BCT-245 I’m going to buy another one of these for my truck.

Don’t try to manually program it. Get some software off the internet (I use ARC, which interfaces with an online site) and in just a few minutes you’re all programmed and ready to go!

This is my first scanner. I got it to monitor traffic on a Motorola Type II system mixed with some APCO 25. I’ve managed to program in the channels (talk ID’s) I need, but this scanner is way over my head. I’m not able to maintain continuity with a specific channel because it keeps scanning the entire channel bank. I realize that this is the purpose of a scanner, but I’m unable to follow traffic in a logical order. This is not the fault of the scanner, it’s because I’m a novice and I suspect because of the system I’m trying to listen in on. Hence the 4 stars: Uniden really should put a little more effort into the manual. There are so many alerts to set on this thing that it took me 3 days to figure out and unprogram the alerts which were interfering with traffic. Now, in a perfect scenario, I would appreciate the Beartracker, etc. Someday. Meanwhile, I have great admiration for this scanner but am on a steep learning curve.

I just recently upgraded my 3 other uniden scanners. I really like the BCT15 but it is somewhat complicated. So of course I needed to buy the director software that makes programming easier thru your computer. The uniden web site I felt was misleading because what I ended up buying was a registration key… not software for $29 dollars. You have to download the software then use the key. Well to this day I have not been able to download it. (Vista) I emailed uniden customer support (which takes them 3 days to respond) so that game went on for awhile. I then was on the phone for over a hour trying for a refund! Which they will not do because they are not sure whether you did download or not! When customer service finally put a guy named Josh on the phone and he told me he would burn me a disk and send it out right away I was happy. The disk never came and they claim they know no Josh. Nightmare…. say the least!

I previously used an Auto Xray for pre 96 vehicles. The newer AutoXray and Actron are very comparable scanners but after calling the companies and researching I decided to go with the Actron because 1)Actron came with a usb hook up for computer link(AX needs an adapter for serial cable) 2)Liked the graph features 3)Better instructions 4)More info in the scanner on codes. Since I already had a capable scanner for the old vehicles I went with the 9185 to save a few bucks off of the 9190. The scanner did prove to be simple to use but can be hazardous if your looking at the live data while driving. A good scanner for the money.

Actron CP9185 Elite Autoscanner Diagnostic Code Scanner With Live Read, Record and Playback Capability For OBDI and OBDII (Post-1996) Vehicles

This tool reqires very little training, you can pretty much use it without instructions, however you might want to upgrade the software off of the internet.I tested my Toyota truck and everything is good,I was worried about the sensors not functioning correctly.I just got it ,a great tool to have, now I need to test some other vehicles in the family.I gave this reader 4 stars because I had some issues with the software not being compatable with my computer,Actron rep. if you read this how about an update on the computer software

The CP9185 works exactly as expected with one exception. It does accurately provide the diagnostic codes for trouble-shooting and will clear (turn-off) the “Repair Soon” light if you wish. It seems to have an extensive built-in database that allows it to recognize most vehicles - both domestic and imported. The operation of the unit is straight-forward and simple. However, the internal database on the unit I received contains data only through model year 2002. Vehicles manufactured after that date would have required an update to the built-in database. Updating over the internet is one of the features that attracted me to this unit. The problem occured when I tried to install the PC drivers that would allow the unit to communicate with my computer - something that is necessary to perform an on-line update. The drivers provided with the unit simply would not work - i.e., the PC would not recognize the drivers on the supplied CD as valid drivers for my CP9185. I am very familiar with computers and installing drivers for a unit like this is straight forward. I contacted technical support (in fact I spoke with them about 4 times) to try to work through the problem. Technical support personnel were friendly and responsive - I have only the highest praise for them - but they were unable to solve the problem. They finally told me that it appeared the CP9185 itself was defective in that it was probably identifying itself incorrectly to the PC - even though the unit appeared to work fine in every other respect. I have shipped the unit back for repair (my expense) and am told it will take 4-6 weeks for repairs to be completed. If it had not been for this problem, I would have rated the CP9185 as a full 5 stars. If and when the unit is returned to me in working order, I will update this review.

This is the first GPS unit I owned and couldn’t be more pleased. After consulting with friends who have owned multiple GPS units and reading various reviews, this is one of the nicest, feature-packed, and most importantly, accurate unit on the market. Just this morning, I opted to take a longer route to get to the highway because the street I usually take was under construction. I’ve driven sparingly on that alternate route for 4 years and never realized there was a small intersecting street in a business district I can cut through to get to the highway more quickly. The Nuvi 660 pointed that out, basically shaving off over a mile in distance, traffic congestion, and plenty of frustration. GPS owners tell me having one will change my life… I’m starting to believe.

To clarify on another review: It DOES come with 6 million POIs… for free. It’s located under the subcategory of “Where to?” in the “Food, Hotels…” icon.

Update 10/22/06 - Just took this Nuvi on an East Coast trip to Washington, D.C., VA, NJ, PA, NY and its performance exceeded my expectations. It found just about every addresses and POIs I entered, except for one because the store recently changed its name. Needless to say, I never got lost. In one instance, I searched for the nearest Target in Fairfax, VA. Not only it got me there, but told me where to drive around inside the shopping center’s parking lot, leading me right up to the front of the store!

Update 11/08/06 - After nearly two months of use, the unit still works well. However, I found that real time traffic indicator is not as useful as initially thought. It would give me the typical obvious traffic jams around town, but who doesn’t already know it, unless one is not from here. I’ve come to realize that no GPS has the capability of knowing which back roads to take to avoid traffic jam in all instances. Only you (the user) being familiar with local roads and its driving conditions can make such a decision.

Update 1/30/07 - The unit suddenly stopped receiving satellite signals yesterday. Tried every method from resetting/rebooting to installing lastest software, but no success. Called tech support this morning and they were able to fix the corrupted software remotely within an hour without having to send in the unit for service.

Originally, it wouldn’t support my 4gig SD memory card, but with the latest Garmin software 3.20 update, it now recognizes it. I’m using the RiDATA PRO 4GB Secure Digital (SD) Flash Card Model SDCR4G. Also, my Verizon Treo 650 links up a little better now when in talk mode, albeit still won’t maintain a stable connection, ie. phonebook, when in standby mode.

Update 6/4/07 - My brother-in-law was so impressed with the 660 that he upgraded from a lower-end Garmin this past Christmas. Last month, his Nuvi stopped receiving a signal. He tried calling tech support, but was unable to fix it remotely like I had. He ended up sending his in for repair. They still were unable to correct the problem at the repair center, so they gave him a brand new replacement. Despite the inconvenience of the malfunction, he came away satisfied with Garmin customer service.

6/29/07 - This unit links up with my iPhone via Bluetooth without a hitch. Bye-bye Treo 650…

My wish list for a better Nuvi:

- have option to select a default city, instead of asking for state & city every time

- alphabetize the favorite list and let user create sublists

- have an alternative qwerty keyboard layout

- design a better mount.. suction cup sucks!

6/11/08 - Although the Nuvi 660 served me well, I upgraded to the Nuvi 760. Overall, it’s a better unit than the 660. If you’re deciding whether to get the 660 or 760, consider the 760 because it comes with a newer map version, faster boot-up (but still has difficulty picking up signals indoors like the 660), no flip-up antenna, slightly brighter screen, QWERTY keyboard, better suction cup mount, and a few other feature enhancements. On the downside, the traffic receiver marginally works and the FM transmitter is still staticky like the 660. By the way, the 660 has been discontinued by Garmin as of January 2008 (if that’s a concern to anyone). But if you already have the 660, no need to upgrade because it’s still a very capable unit.

6/23/08 - Garmin has a 2009 MAP that one can upgrade for FREE if request within the 30-day period of the unit’s registration date. My Nuvi 760 came with 2008 preinstalled. Since I was unable to get the free upgrade via Garmin website, I had to call in and was put on hold for 25 minutes! Anyway, the tech support guy was very helpful in taking me through the steps to register for the free map update. I opted for the CD instead of download. It costs $10 for the shipping/handling via UPS Ground, but he waived the fee for me. Nice! Although I did this with the 760, the same offer should work for the 660, except for the waiver on the shipping :o)

7/8/08 - I sometimes come across comments about the unit’s inability to search for the “best” route. For example, a recent reviewer states that “The Nuvi frequently wants to route me off the highway and thru towns that I know will be much slower.” - MY SUGGESTION IS NOT ONLY YOU HAVE THE OPTION OF CHOOSING SHORTEST ROUTE OR FASTEST TIME, BUT YOU CAN FINE TUNE THE GPS TO AVOID TRAFFIC, U-TURNS, TOLL ROADS, ETC… PLAY WITH THOSE CONFIGURATIONS TO SEE IF YOU GET BETTER RESULTS.

I recently purchased the nuvi 660 for a road trip from the Midwest to New England. I am now using in my daily commute. The product has performed great overall. Most of the features worked well, and the advertised capabilites are fairly represented. I strongly recommend the product, subject to the caveats below.

I also considered purchasing the nuvi 360, but ultimately decided on the 660 because it has the traffic data receiver and the ability to put the audio through the car stero using an FM transmitter.

Now for the issues I have encountered:

1- The FM transmitter works well in rural areas and small urban areas, but not so well in major metro areas such as Chicago or New York. There are simply too many radio stations in major metros for the nuvi to be able to find a space on the radio dial that is quiet enough to not have interference.

2- The auto-tune feature for the FM transmitter is essentially useless. This feature is supposed to find a place on the radio dial that is quiet enough for the nuvi to use. However, I found that it did a very poor job of this. I almost always had to manually tune the nuvi to a blank area on the radio dial. This is not hard, but a bit of an annoyance.

3- The nuvi will lock up if the FM transmitter is on and you go through some electronic toll collection gates. I only ran into this issue in Pittsburgh. I-Pass/EZ-Pass don’t have this effect. The manual does mention that this can happen.

Note - if you have a line in jack on your car stero, you won’t have to deal with the above problems as the nuvi has a line out jack.

4- Navigation instructions in areas with multiple merging roads are often spoken late, and sometimes are inaccacurate. I have run into this problem in 4 different areas so far. Each location had several interstate highways with various merges and exits, and the nuvi was hard pressed to keep up.

5- Routing around traffic is not very good. The traffic data is clear and accurate, but the features that finds routes around the traffic mostly suggests routes that are not going to save time. I find it more useful to use the traffic map display and find my own way around the traffic (of course, you have to know the area to be able to do this).

With this unit, Garmin has blown TomTom out of the water. The 350/360 were slick units but arguably came up a bit short in the display department when compared to the TomTom - that’s all a distant memory now.

This is the most elegant AIO (all in one) GPS navigation solution I’ve come across to date. IMO, it represents the best compromise between size and functionality on the market today. Beyond this point, increasing the screen size enters the diminishing return territory. The SiRFstarIII chipset, while no longer the absolute best on the market, remains a reliable workhorse with rapid satellite acquisition under even less than ideal conditions. The mapping details are excellent though, as with all mapping programs, is not beyond reproach. The 660 has the most recent highly detailed City Navigator NT maps.

The voice prompts are loud, clear and timely. The ease of use is just fantastic and the visibility and quality of the display are now the gold standard in the industry with a 4.3″ WQVGA LCD screen and 480 x 272 pixels. It uses the same low reflection screen as the 360.

POI access is excellent and can be navigated to much more simply than the TomTom unit which requires additional cumbersome steps. The attachment system for the Nuvi is superb and very secure. You can access your POIs directly by name rather than having to go through a cumbersome category menu and then only getting the POIs by proximity as is the case with the TomTom 910. Garmin simply blows TomTom away in the POI functionality department.

This device is intended as an extremely simple point to point navigating AIO GPS navigation solution and is not intended to enable the use of way points or easily changing the course selected by the unit. You have essentially two options: the shortest route and the fastest route. Fortunately, the mapping program selects routs that are very acceptable. Personally, I like to look at the overall route and fiddle with it. This unit is not designed for such use. Microsoft Streets and Trips is ideal for this kind of tinkering, but terrible for point to point navigation while on the go at which the Nuvi has no peer.

Make sure and get the most recent firmware updates on the Garmin website which will fix the known bugs and further improve the functionality. Insofar as functionality goes this unit is as simple as the 350/360. Even my 85 year old father can use these things! He is, to put it kindly, technologically challenged but his 350 is so intuitive and easy to use that he’s had no problems whatsoever. He doesn’t like to be distracted while driving so he plans his trip before leaving and simply listens to the voice prompts.

The new bluetooth feature enables the use of your hands free bluetooth enabled phone. It’s a nice feature, but as with all bluetooth devices that I’ve used it’s still not as good as talking directly on the phone. I personally have not used the built in FM transmitter and so cannot comment on it.

I can heartily recommend this product. Garmin has knocked one out of the park.

I like this panel, I like it a lot. Right now I use it to charge a all of my electronics. It folds up nicely, and doesn’t weigh much. I agree with the other posters on the positive things about these panels.

These panels as individuals (not linked) are serving me and my teams very well in Iraq. We use them to power everything from MP3 Players and cell phones to advanced GPS tracking systems.

There’s only one problem I have, and that is linking more than two panels together. The instructions and box say it can be done, and the box says it includes a linking cable, but there is nothing that says how. You are supposedly able to link up to three panels together, but I am unable to accomplish this no matter how I configure the cables. I’ve written directly to Brunton’s service department for guidance, but after a month I’ve only gotten the read receipts from them. No answer so far. No one on any blog or forum can tell me how this is done. They are expensive, so finding someone that has bought more than one is rare.

All three panels came with the exact same cables, so I don’t think I’m missing anything. There are two connection ports on each panel (it will charge two small items at the same time). As far as cables go you get one with clamps (like the kind that connects to a car battery), one female car cigarette lighter-style outlet, and another cable that has four adapters on one end and a single adapter (for plugging into the panel) on the other.

You have to use the four-ended cable to link panels. The problem is that when you plug the end with four ends into a panel there is no more room to plug in another cable. The two prongs sticking out of the sides prevent this.

Anyone with one panel could see what I mean. Try plugging both ends of your linking cable into your one panel, as would be the case on the middle panel in a series of three. Then consider how you would link three of them together.

I would love to hear from anyone that has accomplished linking more than two of these together.

Linking them together would allow us to power (real time) our field laptops and mini-satellites, we could even recharge our military satcom radio batteries. Unfortunately this isn’t the case yet.

The panel is excellent and I like it a lot. I gave it a three star rating because it claims to be able to do something that it cannot (link three panels). The instructions are also lacking in this area. Brunton’s customer service also leaves something to be desired, which should be your only negative consideration if you’re buying only one.

Update:

I finally got a reply from Brunton concerning linking the panels. Here it is:

“To your question… The four-pronged linking cable can make the

connection between panels a bit tight. Admittedly, the design isn’t the

best, but I’ve got three of our 26s here, hooked them up, and read

increased amperage. On the panels where you’re forced to use both the

single and multi-tipped wire, I’ve found it’s best to turn the four-tip

plug perpendicular to the flat ground, making it easier to fit the

single wire. I’ll be the first to say it isn’t pretty. It creates a

slight fold in the panel, and doesn’t allow it to sit completely flat,

but it does make the connection, and since there’s no solar receiver

over the output, it doesn’t affect the efficiency.

As I said, the multi-prong cord isn’t the best design. It’s something

I’m trying to get them to change in the development department. Keep in

mind that hooking multiple panels together doesn’t increase the total

voltage coming out of your last panel, but rather simply increases the

amperage. ”

Update * Click on “See customer Image” underneath the main product pic to see what this looks like *

So I broke out my panels and gave it a try. Yes, by bending the panel you can make the two fit. This causes me some real problems. My initial intent was to take some cord and tie the panels down (using the nicely grommeted holes in each corner). I can’t do this because the corner that’s bent can’t be tied down tightly. When I pull on the corner that’s bent down (see pic), you can hear the plastic under strain. The four prong outlet tries to straighten out with no where to go, when you do this. I wouldn’t want to tie the panel down tightly for fear of breaking something.

The answer to this of course is to make your own single male-male cable. In the rest of the email the service rep offered to send me some cables and cords that I could splice together.

One other thing I noticed is that the female cigarette outlet is completely smooth on the inside, there are no ridges or insets. Any male connector you insert into it will not “lock” into place. There is some resistance that will keep it from just falling out, but it doesn’t take much to come loose. I don’t think this would be a problem if the panel were laying flat. I imagine that if it were hung up the weight of some cables could cause it to come out. I’ve had no problems at all with powering any device using this outlet.

Update: * Added another image showing the hook up to an EEE ASUS*

I also own an Asus Eee PC 900 16G. One of the prongs on the four ended cable will fit directly into the laptop. It being such a small laptop the panel WILL run it real time while charging the battery (just like it was plugged into the wall).

According to Brunton the panel kicks out 26 Watts, and says it’s at 12 Volts. This means that

12 Volts X 2.2 Amps = 26 Watts

(i’m rounding slightly up on the Amps)

The EEE ASUS Power pack says it has an output of :

12 Volts X 3 Amps = 36Watts

There’s obviously a little play in here, but the Brunton panel is using the same Volts at less amps, so it’s safe to plug it into your EEE PC. In testing this personally it did in fact run the laptop real time and charge the battery at the same time.

I would raise my review to four stars (I can’t modify it), because the panel does do what it says it will do, but it has a design flaw that makes it hard to deal with.

I am a nature photographer, and spend significant intervals a long ways from a power outlet. I recently used this solar charger to keep lithium ion batteries charged for my digital camera. I am pleased to report that it works even better than specified. I was able to charge two Olympus BLM-1 batteries simultaneously, in a couple hours in sunny conditions and in six hours in cloudy conditions. Even when the temperature fell as low as 25 F, the charger worked just fine.

The units folds up into a small comparatively small bag. You wouldn’t use it for ultralight backpacking, but it worked fine for me, and is comparatively light in relation to my camera gear. The charger got rained on, got mud splashed on it, and was stepped on my a small child, and survived it all just fine.

Sturdy, durable, portable, powerful and effective. Highly recommended.

(I saw one review complaining the unit wouldn’t power a laptop computer. That’s true. You’d need two. It won’t power a refrigerator or a dishwasher, either. But if you need to charge batteries, this works great.)

This is a very useful product. I’ve used it to power essentially any low-draw 12V equipment that I normally charge via my car’s cigarette lighter. I live in Georgia (not a tremendously strong solar area) yet I was able to run anything I wanted to with moderate cloud cover. I used it today to charge my cell phone with a dead battery to full charge in less than an hour (as advertised). I haven’t used it to charge my boat/auto battery yet but I have purchased the Brunton Solar Controller to utilize it. The panel is very easy to use and comes with multiple adapters. I’m not an electrician but I was able to open the box and use the product in less than five minutes. I’m excited to take it camping and on my boat. It’s just a really, really useful product all the way around and comes with the Brunton name.

I could not wait to evaluate this new Escort Radar Detector. The reviews from independent companies are way to harsh. This is one fantastic radar detector. The reviews said that this detector goes off every chance it gets weather it is real or not. I travel Interstate 70 and then North on Interstate 75. I pass by many of those “K” Band traffic checkers that set my other detector off erroroneously. This detector was owner programmed for all bands being on and the brand new feature TSR Signal Ranking Software turned on. Default is turned off so you have to make a adjustment. This detector was amazing quiet on my 1 hour trip. On my way home, I traveled Route 41 and again no unusual false alarms. The cop in North Hampton can now be picked up way before he has you. I am extremely pleased. If you want a quality detector at a great price, free shipping and no sales tax, purchase it here at Amazon.com. I had it in two days and it performs unlike any other Escort product I have ever owned. Excellent job Escort on this one.
Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/RAW4FCIBB6CV0 I tested and reviewed the Escort Redline radar detector during an 8000 mile cross country trip with the unit installed in a passenger car, on a Harley Davidson motorcycle, and a commercial grade motorhome. The attached video is a recap of many of the speed traps that I encountered along with my review of the radar detector.

Without question, the Redline is the best performing long range radar detector that I’ve ever tested….

Great deal from Amazon. (270 USD) with Amazon prime shipping. A lot cheaper compared with the other expensive ones in this tough economy.

Pros:
—–
This one is a new version, March 2009 release.

1. In-Built Bluetooth works fine and plays music directly from Iphone without having to connect any wires to it. No hissing nor static noise in the back ground. Audio from Bluetooth is crystal clear.
2. Rear view camera(bought a 40 USD camera from Amazon and hooked it up by myself), DVD player, FM(16 presets), all works as advertised.
3. Cheaper (270 USD) when compared to Pioneer AVH-P3100DVD with Blue tooth which comes to atleast 420 USD.(with the steering wheel interface)
4. I got Pioneer AVH-P3100DVD (just for comparison) and this unit and tried both of them in my Honda Pilot to check how it works and did not see any difference in quality.
5. Bought a soldering Iron(15 USD) and soldered all the wires by myself. (saved 60 USD in installation charges).Instruction manual provided is more than sufficient to do it.
6. Prompt customer support via email when you register in their website.

I hope the quality of this product lasts for a long time.

Minor tweaks
————
1. Connected the Dimmer to the parking brake to make the DVD play in the front panel as well.
2. Had to connect the rear view camera trigger wire to the back up light system.
3. Need to connect the rear view camera video output to the CAM input.

Cons:
—–
1. 4 star rating because it does not have a steering wheel control Interface but to compensate for it they provide a wireless remote control.
2. Does not support SDHC or USB memory stick more than 2 GB.
